Inspired by true events, The Revenant focuses on a legendary explorer named Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio). While on a trip to the uncharted American wilderness, Glass and his young Pawnee son are all that are keeping his hunting crew out of harm’s way. But an attack on Glass by a wild animal leaves him near death in the arctic weather of an American winter. With few left in the party, the captain leaves a couple of men behind to care for Glass until his seemingly inevitable death. The Ioc's statement to various national Olympic committees on Friday explained how athletes and visitors should take cautionary measures to prevent contracting the mosquito-borne illness that causes severe birth defects and is "spreading explosively" according to the World Health Organization. Telluride – For most moviegoers the new drama “Black Mass” will feel inherently familiar, and the reason is obvious. The story of notorious Boston crime lord Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp) and the FBI agent who essentially protected him, John Connolly (Joel Edgerton), inspired Martin Scorsese’s 2007 Oscar-winning drama ‘The Departed.” The difference between the pictures is that “Mass” notably fleshes the story out with distinct historical detail that film lacked. Yet, with a number of high-profile crime thrillers set in Boston over the past eight years “Mass” has to rely on Johnny Depp’s inspired portrayal of Bulger and a strong ensemble to truly captivate. There are worse problems to have. Set mostly in the ‘70s and ‘80s, “Mass” starts off by attempting to frame Bulger’s rise to prominence through the plea bargained testimony of his notorious Irish-American Winter Hill gang, namely Kevin Weeks (Jesse Plemons) who went from...

This year the strong slate from Fox chairman Jim Gianopulos and his new motion picture chief Stacey Snider offers several fall possibilities for the award season. “I really thought I was blowing it… but I knew I just fight to the finnish… Crossing the finish line, just seeing my name in the top three, it didn’t even matter if I could have been better. All that mattered to me was crossing that finish line with a solid run,” Mancuso stated after her win.

Transitioning from the top of the podium to normal life isn't easy, but then, neither are triple axels. Ohno and Hamilton will serve as analysts at Sochi, but they won't be offering life advice like this. Before the Sochi Games start,...

American Cinema Editors (Ace) today announced nominations for the 64th Annual Ace Eddie Awards recognizing outstanding editing in ten categories of film, television and documentaries. Winners will be revealed during Ace’s annual black-tie awards ceremony on Friday, February 7, 2014 in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
The Ace Eddie Awards is considered an integral precursor to the Oscars. No film has won Best Picture at the Oscars without also having received at least a Best Editing nomination since Ordinary People in 1981. Since the Ace membership boasts a very high crossover within its membership of Academy members, it represents a very accurate bellwether for the eventual Oscar outcome.

With the nation’s economy continually on a knife’s edge, the past few years has seen the political discourse take a marked shift. Conservative politicians have started to lure voters with an image that they will tighten the wasteful spending in Washington, but for the most part, that has meant targeting social services. Indeed, healthcare, social security and other measures are seen as bloated programs that will sink the country into financial ruin if they aren’t severely overhauled. And all of this is being done in the name of supposedly preserving the middle class, but as the documentary “American Winter” argues, the entire approach is not only wrong headed, it’s only making things worse for the people these policies are supposed to protect.Filmmakers Joe and Harry Gantz make their argument by turning their cameras to Portland, Oregan and tracking the tales of eight families, who all...
