  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : These people are my friends.

  Oriane Congost : Perhaps... but they will lead us to ruin.

  Guilhem du Mas : I've betrayed my marriage bed. Of course I have regrets.

  Francois : There is vile talk that Intendant Pelletier is not your father. It is tavern prattle, no more.

  Oriane Congost : A-And who is my true father?

  Francois : They say your mother whored herself with a passing ballad singer while Pelletier was in the Holy Land. The Intendant took her back for the sake of his honor. He could never love you, the living proof of his wife's sin. But there's not a word of truth in any of it.

  Oriane Congost : Do people laugh at me behind my back? A whore's daughter? The cuckoo in Pelletier's nest?

  Francois : But no-no one would dare.

  Oriane Congost : [he tries to put a hand of comfort on her shoulder]  Leave me.

  [he turns to leave] 

  Oriane Congost : Wait. Does my sister know?
