Katie McGrath: Oriane Congost

Quotes

  • Oriane Congost : Remember your position, sister. Would Guilham du Mas approve of his wife galloping like a kitchen maid?

Alais Pelletier Du Mas : I was hoping to see him before council began.

Oriane Congost : Too late. Pity. I know you can hardly bear to spend a moment apart.

Alais Pelletier Du Mas : I can't speak for my husband, but for my own part, that is true. I see no shame in it.

Oriane Congost : Hmm. How much you love him. But be careful, Alais. Men are fickle. Their affections change.

Alais Pelletier Du Mas : Guilham is not like that.

Oriane Congost : [a bell tolls nearby]  Let us go in together. I'm sure we're both eager to hear our country's fate.

  • Viscount Trencavel : One year ago, His Holiness, Pope Innocent III, preached a crusade against what he called "the cancer of heresy". These pious and humble men, he said, were the enemies of God. I have recently received news that a northern host of more than 20,000 men was preparing to invade these free Christian lands. They are advancing south and may be with us in under a week. They are determined to persecute and destroy the Cathar people. I have heard that two of the most powerful barons of northern France are amongst their number. Guy D'evreux and the Fifth Earl of the Leicester, Simon de Montfort. But I promise you this: for as long as I rule, no man in the Languedoc will be condemned for his honest beliefs!

Oriane Congost : [watching, hidden, with Alais]  All this fuss over a ragged band of heretics. How much simpler would it be to have done with it and make a bonfire of them all.

Alais Pelletier Du Mas : These people are my friends.

Oriane Congost : Perhaps... but they will lead us to ruin.

  • Oriane Congost : Do you have regrets, Guilhem?

Guilhem du Mas : I've betrayed my marriage bed. Of course I have regrets.

Oriane Congost : I mean about marrying my sister.

Guilhem du Mas : Don't push me too far, Oriane.

Oriane Congost : Must a widow live like a nun the rest of her life?

Guilhem du Mas : There are other men who could satisfy your desires.

Oriane Congost : And you have a wife who can indulge yours. And yet here we both are again. You can leave now. We both know you'll be back.

  • Oriane Congost : What is it you really make here, Esclarmonde de Servian? Potions and spells for the weak-minded? Women have been burned as witches for less.

Esclarmonde : I'm a simple healer, Oriane. I use nature's way. That is all.

  • Oriane Congost : Tell me, Francois. You're familiar with the talk below stairs. What do the maids and servants say about me?

Francois : Well, you are greatly respected there.

Oriane Congost : There's no gossip about the circumstances of my birth? No rumors about my mother?

Francois : None that I know of.

Oriane Congost : Tell me the truth... or I will rip your tongue out. What have you heard?

Francois : There is vile talk that Intendant Pelletier is not your father. It is tavern prattle, no more.

Oriane Congost : A-And who is my true father?

Francois : They say your mother whored herself with a passing ballad singer while Pelletier was in the Holy Land. The Intendant took her back for the sake of his honor. He could never love you, the living proof of his wife's sin. But there's not a word of truth in any of it.

Oriane Congost : Do people laugh at me behind my back? A whore's daughter? The cuckoo in Pelletier's nest?

Francois : But no-no one would dare.

Oriane Congost : [he tries to put a hand of comfort on her shoulder]  Leave me.

    [he turns to leave]

Oriane Congost : Wait. Does my sister know?

[without a verbal answer, he shakes his head]
