  Oriane Congost : [watching, hidden, with Alais]  All this fuss over a ragged band of heretics. How much simpler would it be to have done with it and make a bonfire of them all.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : These people are my friends.

  Oriane Congost : Perhaps... but they will lead us to ruin.

• Alais Pelletier Du Mas : What about the book under your protection?

  Bertrand Pelletier : It's well hidden. When the time comes, if things go badly at Carcassona, I will tell you where. In the meantime, our only hope, I still have time to fulfill my obligations. But if I cannot, you must take my place.

  [giving a ring to her] 

  Bertrand Pelletier : The labyrinth is a symbol of the grail. Now, this ring, keep it safe. The other guardians will know you by it. And when the time comes, they will tell you what to do.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : But why me, Father? Oriane is your eldest daughter. She has power and influence at court. Why not entrust this duty to her?

  Bertrand Pelletier : Oriane thinks too much of her own wealth and comfort. Only you possess the qualities needed for so great an undertaking.

• Alais Pelletier Du Mas : The Pope has established a new inquisition to persecute the Cathars. His informers are everywhere.

  Rixende : The Pope does not frighten me. I take my duty from God.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : Even so, it would be wise to worship in private, at least until the crusade is over.

  Rixende : I have never made a secret of my faith and never will. What will be, will be.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : You are the greatest healer in Carcassona, Esclarmonde. I am merely your apprentice.

  Esclarmonde : The pupil has far outstripped her teacher.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : I cannot believe that.

• Bertrand Pelletier : What is it? You can see I'm busy.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : You asked for me, Father.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : [realizing]  This is some game of Oriane's. I was with Esclarmonde.

  Bertrand Pelletier : The healer? And what of it?

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : She is the sister Harif wrote to you about. The other guardian.

  Bertrand Pelletier : Are you certain?

  [she nods] 

  Bertrand Pelletier : Right. I'll see her as soon as I can. Safety of the city comes first. If Carcassona is safe, the books are safe.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : What of Oriane? Can she be trusted?

  Bertrand Pelletier : She has no reason to betray us.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : Then you do not see the darkness in her heart?

• Simeon : The book of numbers. Your father already has the book of words. Each of us according to our skills.

  Bertrand Pelletier : What of the book of potions? I thought that too was in your care.

  Simeon : It was collected by Harif's messenger, a wise and learned woman. I never learned her name.

  Bertrand Pelletier : Harif's letter did speak of a sister in Carcassona.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : Tell me more about Harif.

  Simeon : Harif is the navigator. He's responsible for preserving the secret of the grail. Years ago, in the Holy Land, he appointed us all to our tasks. He's the finest man I ever met. I know the book will be safe in your hands, Bertrand.

  Bertrand Pelletier : [standing to leave, they shake hands]  Keep well, Simeon. I fear our enemies are close by.

• Bertrand Pelletier : We've ridden out and seen the Crusaders' line. They're two days' march away, maybe less. We must prepare for siege.

  Rixende : But at least you will return safely, Messire. If that doesn't prove God is on our side, what does?

  Bertrand Pelletier : Hmm. I must speak with you in private, Alais. You must meet my daughter later, Du Mas. I have business with her.

  Guilhem du Mas : What business?

  Bertrand Pelletier : It's none of your concern.

  Guilhem du Mas : Anything involving my wife is my concern.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : Forgive me.

  Guilhem du Mas : [insulted]  Oh, I apologize. Your first loyalty has always been to your father.

• Esclarmonde : Hello, Alais.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : I've come to ask you a question.

  Esclarmonde : Ask me anything you like.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : Have you too received a letter from Harif?

  Esclarmonde : I don't know what you're talking about.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : I don't believe you. Who better than a healer to guard the book of potions?

  [Esclarmonde smiles] 

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : Why have you never told my father you were the other guardian?

  Esclarmonde : The fewer people knew, the safer the books.

• Guilhem du Mas : I've been in the chapel, praying. But I do not think my words flew up to God. All I could think of... were the many wrongs I've done you. I beg your forgiveness for my coldness towards you.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : You look tired. You should sleep.

  Guilhem du Mas : I don't want to sleep.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : There's still time for things to be right between us.

• Alais Pelletier Du Mas : There's a body in the river. A Jew, I think.

  Pafait - Pelletier : You went down to the river without an escort?

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : Oh, please, Father, listen to me. This man was still wearing fine clothes, jewelry... and there was something else. The thumb on his left hand had been cut off.

• Pafait - Pelletier : War is coming, Alais. It's time I told you the truth.

  Pafait - Pelletier : About a vow I made many years ago. Now, you're going to think I'm drunk or I've lost my wits, but you must believe me. I'm talking of the true history of the grail.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : The Holy Grail? The cup that Christ drank from the night of the Last Supper?

  Pafait - Pelletier : Well, the legend of the grail has its place in Christian tradition. The real story, the true story, is much older than that. See, the ancients possessed wisdom that has long since been lost to us, and the grail is the secret essence of that wisdom.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : What is that secret?

  Pafait - Pelletier : All you need to know for now is that many years ago, I was admitted to a secret brotherhood sworn to protect it. The wisdom of the grail is contained in three books, and I am in possession of one of them.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : You?

  Pafait - Pelletier : It was entrusted to me by a man named Harif. I met him in the Holy Land. He's without doubt the wisest man I've ever known.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : Where are the two remaining books?

  Pafait - Pelletier : Safely with the other guardians. I heard today from Harif that the three books are to be reunited and taken to a safe place in the mountain.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : The other guardians. Do you know who they are?

  Pafait - Pelletier : One of them. He's an old friend. Jew named Simeon.

  Alais Pelletier Du Mas : It was Simeon you thought to be found murdered in the river.

  Pafait - Pelletier : I was wrong, thank God. But I do believe an innocent man was mistaken for him. Somehow, our secret has been betrayed.
