- Milwaukee, Wisconsin: six months ago
Jennie is leaving her foster home, and her mother gives him a box that Jennie's brother left her for her birthday. She sits on the step and opens the box, revealing a Matchbox that belonged to Todd.
At the same time in Civic Center, Todd's friend Danny takes him to a restaurant he broke into, and said that he wanted to give Todd something special on his birthday goes to the kitchen to cook their dinner, and Todd finds a birthday card on his plate. Inside it is a bus ticket. Todd puts the ticket in his pocket.
Jennie puts the car back in the box, and looks at the photo of her and Todd. She takes out her father's ring, and the wind picks up. Her body glows green and the ring float into the air on its own as memories of her and Todd being separated enter her mind.
IN the restaurant, Todd glows with the same energy.
The ring flies around Jennie, while at the restaurant Todd falls on the floor and screams, as Danny runs back to him. Black tendrils shoot out of Todd, and the police pull up outside. Danny tells Todd that they have to go, and Todd tells him to leave without him. As Danny runs off, two policemen come in. They ask Todd if he's who they think he is, and Todd wonders how they know his name. They take him to the Helix house, and Dr. Love says that they'll be paid and then greets Todd. She tells him that he's safe and leads him inside.
In the house, Love offers to get Todd food and wishes him happy birthday. She explains that Helix is a place for troubled and special youth such as himself. Love asks what else Todd knows about his father, Alan Scott, and Todd knows that Scott is dead. She says that Scott wielded great power when he was alive, and tells Todd that Scott was Green Lantern. Mr. Bones emerges from the shadows, his skin transparent, and tells Todd that he knows what it's like to be different, and the place is hope.
Blue Valley: Today
The Whitmores are gathered around the dinner table in silence. They finally speak awkwardly, and Sly talks to Pat over an earphone saying that they're better at acting normal. It's an act for the mysterious fellow that is watching them.
Rick, Jakeem, and Zeek, are having game night at the garage, aware that they're being watched. Yolanda is working at the diner, and her mother calls her. She takes the phone from Maria and her mother says that Maria told her that it's the first late night Yolanda has worked at the diner, and asks who she's been with.
Sly tells Beth at her house that the team is in place. Beth is at her laptop, and she wonders if it was better that Gambler found the cameras first. Sly points out that it got him killed, and now Beth should focus on taking out the town's power so they can destroy the cameras.
Yolanda's mother tells her that she needs to tell her the truth. Yolanda gets a text that the team is in position, and tells her mother that she'll explain when she gets home.
At the garage, Zeek keeps up with his anecdote for Jakeem's benefit. Rick gets increasingly jumpier and looks at the hourglass timer on his belt. Meanwhile, Beth takes the town's power out and Blue Valley is plunged into chaos. Pat says that they have to find the cameras and disconnect them.
Furious, the killers knocks his board on the floor.
At the school, Hourman and Dr. Mid-Nite look around and Mid-Nite finds a hidden camera pointed at their table. They discuss Courtney, and Mid-Nite insists that she still wants to be Stargirl. She figures that someone they don't know killed Gambler. Hourman knocks the camera out of the wall and explains that he took off the delimiter on his hourglass, and punches another wall to demonstrate. He says that he's amped and leaves.
In the basement, Courtney finds Pat searching for the cameras. He asks if she's okay with everything going on, and assures her that she can talk to him about anything. Courtney blames herself by not telling them about Cameron, and now her credibility as the JSA leader is gone, and figures they don't need her when Starman is leading them. Pat points out that she got them started as hero, and assures Courtney that there's still a role for her.
Shade appears out of the shadows and says that he requires her services. Courtney says that she can't go and Starman has the Staff, and he says that he needs her. He grabs Courtney and drags her into a shadow portal, and Pat runs after them.
Yolanda returns home and disables the cameras in her house, and checks her bedroom. Sly is talking to her, and tells Yolanda that she and Courtney just need to talk things out. Once Yolanda signs off, her mother Maria comes in and warns Yolanda of what would happen if her father found out what she was doing. Yolanda insists that she wasn't sneaking out, and Maria demands to see her phone. Her daughter refuses, saying she's done nothing wrong, and tells Maria to trust her if she loves her. Maria insists on seeing the phone or Yolanda should get out of the house.
At the Whitmore house, Mike looks in the basement but finds his father and sister gone. The door closes behind him.
Shade, Courtney, and Pat appear in a boiler room, and Shade says that he would take Pat back if he could. As he leads them away, he says that his powers are unraveling and the woman who could restore them is too immature and stubborn. He leads them to a waiting Jennie, and she and Shadow argue about which one is stubborn. Pat leads Shade away, and Jennie tells Courtney that she finally found Todd and he needs their help.
At Helix, a guard goes to a wing where Todd youth is strapped to a table, while Bones and Love experiment on him.
Pat and Shade rejoin the girls, and Jennie says that they're in the basement of Helix, and Todd is being experimented on upstairs. Shade says that his power and Jennie's are intertwined, and he insists that Jennie has no control over the ring. Jennie tells them that the ring is corrupted by Shade's shadows. Pat interrupts them and wonders how they got tied up together, and Jennie says before they defeated Eclipso, she and Beth found black residue in the cafeteria. Jennie used the ring to destroy it, but Shade thinks it infected the ring, and if they don't break the connection, their conditions will worsen. Shade says that Jennie needs to exorcise the shadow from the ring, and then Jennie will have her full powers and she can save Todd. He's not interested in helping the JSA, and Jennie asks Courtney how she freed herself from Eclipso the first time. She says that saving Todd might help Jennie expel the shadow and let Shade get full control of his powers, and an exasperated Shade agrees to help.
Bones tells Love that they need to be more aggressive with the treatment before they lose control. Love agrees and turns up the ring above Todd that is generating energy.
At the garage, Thunderbolt grants Jakeem's wish and brings all the cameras together. Thunderbolt brings hundreds of cameras that the killer touched there. Zeek points out that they know where Gambler was killed and how, but not who, and suggests that Jakeem lacks confidence and therefore the wishes "malfunction". He suggests that Jakeem's wishes just not be specific, but need drive and desire. Jakeem needs to wish for something so hard that it has to come true.
Barbara and Mike wonder where Pat and Courtney went, and there's a knock at the door. They find Yolanda there with a bag, and Yolanda says that she had nowhere else to go. Barbara hugs her.
At the school, Hourman and Dr. Mid-Nite go into a classroom searching for the last cameras. Hourman casually tosses a desk aside and tells Dr. Mid-Nite that he needs to flex, and they'll crush anyone who comes after them. The power comes back out, and Hourman tells the watcher that they're coming for them and then smashes the camera.
At Helix, Courtney and others go upstairs and look around. Shade sends Todd down a hallway and says that he doesn't know how he knows. They find the door locked to the ring, and Courtney talks Jennie through using the ring to cut through the lock. She and Shade both wince in pain, and they go onto the chamber where Todd is being experimented on. When Shade touches the doorknob, he's thrown back. Jennie and Courtney run in and find Todd convulsing. Jennie introduces herself, and Todd tells them that if they get him out of the room, he'll destroy the world.
Jennie grabs Todd's arm, and has two memories of the two of them being separated as children. Shadows flow from Todd's eyes, and a burst of green energy knocks Jennie and the others back and knocks out the power. When the backup generators kick in, Todd has turned into a shadow humanoid and moans in pain. Shadow tendrils emerge from him and reach for Courtney, and Pat leaps in the way.
Pat wakes up on a Blue Valley street with Shade, who was nearby when the shadows consumed Pat. Townspeople walk past them, and a car driving down the street almost runs them over.
