Director Michael Matthews and writer Sean Drummond were drawn to the landscapes of South Africa’s Eastern Cape while traveling their homeland, especially the echoes of classic cinematic western environments. Learning about how its current towns arose — from the ashes of Apartheid-era cities mimicking European capitals by name — only cemented the comparison, each a product of the locals taking control once their oppressors left after their government changed hands and the train lines shutdown. This new frontier became the pair’s setting, their story gelling after seven years of research and development to do right by the inhabitants’ history and struggles. Sprinkle in a bit of legend and lore to create an antihero hidden beneath rage and Five Fingers for Marseilles was born.
The title describes a quintet of childhood friends caught within Apartheid’s grip. Too young to feel the effects as greatly as their defeated parents, they’re...

★★☆☆☆ Bizarrely selected as closing film of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, French director Jérôme Salle's ultra-generic South African cop thriller Zulu (2013) - starring Forest Whitaker, Orlando Bloom and over one hundred grating clichés - finds its way onto DVD this week. Whitaker plays Captain Ali, a rigorous and by-the-books police officer who is haunted by a terrible incident in his past. Bloom is the Martin Riggs of the pair, a serial philanderer, an absent father and an alcoholic who certainly doesn't feel inclined to play by the rules. When a rich white girl is beaten to death the pair are called in and are soon linking the murder to a new kind of drug being sold on the streets, as well as a raft of missing children.

After Orlando Bloom took a swing at Justin Bieber in Ibiza Wednesday, E! News asked readers to pick a team based on the rumored rivals' attractiveness, wealth, personality, social media presence and more. Hollywood weighed in on the boys' brouhaha, too, and it seems they mostly sided with the Zulu actor. Former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell, who has often feuded with Bieber himself, took to Twitter to weigh in on the fight. He posted photos of Looney Tunes characters Spike the Bulldog and Chester the Terrier, writing, "@justinbieber I found these cool pictures of you and your body guard from the other night!" Orlando Bloom's still got it!The "Pirates of the Caribbean" star flaunted his chiseled chest and impressive abs during a stroll at the beach in Malibu on Saturday. Sporting a pair of low-slung lavender Free City sweatpants and a navy sweater around his neck, the 37-year-old actor seemed to be enjoying his relaxing day in the sun. The studly star is clearly comfortable with his body -- something that he mastered on the set of "Zulu," a role that required him to be fully nude. "I got in the best shape of my life for that movie. It was quite amusing walking around set and seeing the crew avert their eyes at first. Then there were a few more people watching playback," he told Elle last year. "I got so comfortable with it I could brush up behind someone and go, 'Oh, excuse me.'"We wouldn't mind being on set to see that!

Earlier this month Orlando Bloom was given one of Hollywood’s highest accolades, a star on the Walk of Fame, the 2,521st one. Accepting the award, the 37-year-old actor was more doting family man than cinema star, playing with his young son Flynn and graciously giving his estranged wife, the Australian model Miranda Kerr, thanks for supporting him in his career. There were complimentary speeches, too, from his fellow hall-of-famer Forest Whitaker, who stars with the British actor in his new film, Zulu, and David Leveaux, the five-time Tony Award nominee who has just directed the British actor on Broadway in Romeo and Juliet. It was a happy day, but Bloom’s star also looked like something of a headstone, signifying the end of his time as a handsome young action hero.

Marvel’s secret digital series, 60 Minutes visits with Jack Andraka, and Sir Anthony Hopkins fanboys over Breaking Bad.
Sir Anthony Hopkins may be the world’s biggest Breaking Bad fan out there – and he only started watching the show two weeks ago. He actually sent Bryan Cranston a fan letter. “Your performance as Walter White was the best acting I have seen – ever. I know there is so much smoke blowing and sickening bullshit in this business, and I’ve sort of lost belief in anything really. But this work of yours is spectacular – absolutely stunning. What is extraordinary, is the sheer power of everyone in the entire production. What was it? Five or six years in the making? How the producers (yourself being one of them), the writers, directors, cinematographers…. every department – casting etc. managed to keep the discipline and control from beginning to the end is (that over used word) awesome.

Orlando Bloom has spoken about his role in forthcoming drama Zulu.
The actor, 36, explained that he bares all for the movie and that fans will "get to see the full Orlando Bloom".
Speaking on Watch What Happens Live, Bloom said: "Earlier this year I spent about seven days on set wearing just a c**k sock because I'm nude.
"It's a film called Zulu and it stars myself and Forest Whitaker. It's directed by this fantastic French director called Jerome Salle. We premiered it at Cannes."
Set in apartheid-era Cape Town, Bloom and Whitaker are cops investigating the murder of an 18-year-old girl. Whitaker's character Ali Sokhela narrowly escaped being murdered as a child by a militant political group, and has since become chief of Cape Town's homicide division.
He joins forces with Bloom's "free-wheeling white officer" to investigate the murder of the young woman, who is the daughter of a feted rugby player.

Flynn Bloom was in a playful mood today while out and about in New York City with dad Orlando Bloom. The toddler couldn't keep his hands away his dad's face or nose while sitting on his shoulders, and he also took a turn riding in a backpack. Recently, we've also spotted Flynn out and about with his mom, Miranda Kerr. While Orlando works on his play, Romeo and Juliet, the adorable mother-son duo have popped up for lunch dates and playground outings around the city. In the November issue of Cosmopolitan, Miranda talked about her family, saying: "Flynn says Mommy works and Daddy plays, because Daddy is in a play . . . so that makes sense. When I saw Orlando on Broadway in Romeo and Juliet, I was blown away. For someone to be able to learn all that and hold the energy to do it every day, six days a week...

Forest Whitaker may still be riding high from the success of his performance in Lee Daniels’ The Butler, but it looks like he’s getting the chance to add another film to the gruffer side of his resume with Jérôme Salle‘s Zulu. In the French-subtitled (and Nsfw) trailer, Whitaker and Orlando Bloom play homicide detectives in Cape Town, South Africa, where the duo deals with combating crime in a city still reeling from the after effects of apartheid. But they quickly discover the worst criminals of all are the government itself, which is working on building a chemical “race bomb,” designed to detonate and prevent an increase in the black population. The trailer contains a whole lot of gun slinging and swearing, set to a powerful Alexandre Desplat (Zero Dark Thirty) score. Check out the trailer for yourself: It’s a compelling concept, for sure (based on the novel by Caryl Férey of the same name...

A red-band French trailer has arrived for Zulu, a South Africa-set thriller based on Caryl Férey’s novel of the same name. The film, directed by Jérôme Salle, was the closing night film of this year’s Cannes Film Festival in May, and though it is currently without North American distribution, it is probably only a matter of time before it gets picked up. Forest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom play partners in Cape Town’s homicide branch, who uncover a conspiracy that could curb the black population. You can watch the moody trailer below.

Though Forest Whitaker looks he’s headed back to the Kodak Theater with the sincere “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” the Oscar-winning actor looks to be getting into rough-and-tumble mode with the Jérôme Salle-helmed “Zulu.” A French (and somewhat Nsfw) trailer (via Shadow and Act) has arrived online for the South Africa-set crime thriller, and it looks like pretty compelling stuff. Watch it below. The Cannes closing night film was adapted from Caryl Férey’s novel of the same name and follows Whitaker as head of the homicide branch in Cape Town and Orlando Bloom as his partner as the two struggle to combat crime in a city still dealing with the fallout of apartheid. It looks like they uncover a "Chinatown"-ish conspiracy, too, this one involving the government's secret plans on detonating a "race bomb" that would curb the black population. It looks like Whitaker has gotten...

Cannes, France -- Academy award-winner Forest Whitaker turns in a solid performance as a cop searching for the murderer of a white teenager in the movie "Zulu," a violent and often shocking portrayal of South African gang culture where traces of apartheid still linger.
The film premiered at the close of the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday and is directed by "Largo Winch'"s Jerome Salle, co-starring Orlando Bloom as a free-wheeling white officer, as well as South African actor Conrad Kemp.
As a child, Whitaker's character Ali narrowly escaped being murdered by Inkhata, a militant political party at war with Nelson Mandela's anti-apartheid Anc. Now, as chief of Cape Town's homicide branch, his quest to bring the perpetrator to justice leads him on a path that uncovers the unhealed wounds of post-apartheid South Africa.

The steady invasion of auteur genre films into the Cannes Film Festival steps over the line with Zulu, a French policier distinguished only by Forest Whitaker's deeply resonant performance as a detective and its South African setting. Were it not for the star power of Whitaker and Orlando Bloom, one might seriously doubt whether this well-built vehicle would have received the honor of closing le festival. French director Jerome Salle, who made the round-the-world adventure films Largo Winch I and II, uses the scars left by apartheid as a political subtext, but it's not forefronted enough to

To the outsider, the Cannes Film Festival can be a nebulous thing. Even if you know the filmmaker or the cast, sometimes you need more context than a review to give you a sort of firmer grasp of the shape, texture and tone of a movie. Clips from the festival are landing left and right, so we thought we'd grab a smattering and ground you a little deeper than some of the reviews and pictures your may or may not have seen. So here we go. The first clip is a featurette from "Zulu," the official Closing Film of Cannes this year, that brings together some interesting talent for what seems to be a hard-boiled crime tale. Directed by Jérôme Salle ("Largo Winch" and "Anthony Zimmer," which was later remade as "The Tourist" with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie) "Zulu" stars Orlando Bloom and Forest Whitaker as a couple of...

Gore, once largely the preserve of the Marché, is entering the Cannes mainstream. Is a strange turnaround at work?
At the opening night gala for this year's Cannes film festival, the dignitaries were treated to a trailer showing all the delights to which they can look forward. The trailer began with a shot of Ryan Gosling breaking a glass in someone's face (in Only God Forgives) and ended with Forest Whitaker being stabbed through the ear (in Zulu). Good evening, dignitaries, and welcome to Cannes.
"Lights! Camera! Bloodbath!" bellows the headline in today's Hollywood Reporter, which goes on to quote a programmer's sheepish explanation that the trailer was "done in a hurry". In the meantime, festival director Thierry Fremaux is said to be unimpressed, reportedly "deploring" any impression given by the trailer that this year's lineup offers little more than a heaped buffet of GBH. That, after all, is what the Cannes Marché is for.
