As if losing his wife, watching his dog get beaten, falling off a skyscraper, and being seemingly resurrected from the dead wasn’t enough, John Wick apparently still has more to lose.
The famed assassin character, portrayed by Keanu Reeves in the eponymous films, returns for “John Wick: Chapter 4,” with director Chad Stahelski promising that installment is the bloodiest yet. The film currently has a March 24, 2023 release date.
“We keep finding new and interesting ways to have John Wick suffer,” the stunt coordinator turned director told The Hollywood Reporter.
Reeves, who performs most of his own stunts and fight choreography alongside Stahelski, added, “That’s where the action comes from. Figure out how to make him suffer, and then design backward.”
The “Matrix” icon continued, “I’ve called out a couple of things, like, let’s get on a horse in the desert. Let’s drive a little bit.

Before the pandemic, movie studios centered their energies on IP-first tentpoles in pursuit of 1 billion worldwide grosses. The mid-budget theatrical release? An endangered species, and maybe not one worth saving. And then — enter the World Wildlife Fund, as portrayed by CinemaCon.
Suddenly, films with budgets under 50 million may not go straight to streaming this summer. In fact, these films are central to studios’ plans to reinvigorate in-person moviegoing.
“We continue to believe that if you build it, they will come,” Jim Orr, Universal’s president of theatrical distribution, said during the studio’s presentation at Caesars Palace April 27. “But what we also know for certain is that if you stop building it, they won’t. That’s why we are not narrowing our field of theatrical releases.”
In 2019, Universal distributed around 17 films domestically. This year, it’s on track to release more than 25 movies in theaters, from an installment of...

Lionsgate offered CinemaCon attendees a preview of its upcoming film slate on Thursday, and “John Wick: Chapter 4” was front and center. The studio is set to release the latest entry in the Keanu Reeves franchise next March, and the early footage promises more over-the-top action and an increasingly ambitious scope.
“‘John Wick’ is more than a film series,” said Lionsgate chairman Joe Drake. “It’s a modern day myth. It’s a carefully unfolding universe. And it’s an experience to be witnessed on the big screen.”
Reeves and franchise director Chad Stahelski were on hand to promote the film, which Stahelski described as “a love letter to classic action movies.” Everyone was in agreement that the film will feature more of the extreme fight scenes that have come to define the series.
“What moviegoers told us is that watching the first ‘Wick’ was seeing the genre actually evolve right before your eyes,...

Keanu Reeves’ John Wick is back for the fourth time, and he hasn’t slowed down a bit. Lionsgate teased “John Wick: Chapter 4” in an exclusive look at CinemaCon with the action film’s first full trailer, and it’s even more of the slick, stylish and hyper-violent action that fans of the franchise can never get enough of.
Lionsgate chair Joe Drake at CinemaCon compared the “John Wick” franchise to some of the subversive and unexpected ’70s movies of his childhood. He called the film a “modern myth,” “a singular experience” and “a cultural phenomenon” that is special because it started as an original story. And oh yeah, Keanu Reeves was on stage at Vegas to hype the movie too.
Reeves talked about first meeting director Chad Stahelski on “The Matrix” back in 1998, and Stahelski said that the latest chapter is an homage to all those classic action legends throughout the ages.

As the physical edition of the Berlin Film Festival kicks off today and with the virtual edition of the European Film Market well underway, a number of key talking points such as Covid, the uncertainty of the theatrical sector and satisfying the demand for streaming platforms are likely to be hot button topics amongst buyers and sellers alike.
While the volume of business in what is looking like a rather compact market remains to be seen (with a host of sales agents admitting it’s harder to create buzz around titles at a virtual market rather than a physical one), there’s a few packages out there likely to whet the appetite of international buyers.
But before the deal-making commences, Deadline asked some of Germany’s major players in the film world to give us a sense of the lay of the land in their territory at the moment, highlighting...

The clock is ticking on a number of noteworthy titles leaving Netflix this month.
Below, we’ve assembled a complete list of everything leaving Netflix in January 2022, and it includes quite a few films you may want to prioritize on your watchlist. Leaving Jan. 6 is “The Green Knight” filmmaker David Lowery’s quietly mesmerizing drama “A Ghost Story” starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara. Also leaving on Jan. 6 is Illumination Entertainment’s animated retelling of “The Lorax,” while Jan. 5 marks the exit date of all five seasons of the Matt LeBlanc comedy series “Episodes.”
But the highest profile departure this month is all five films in the “Twilight” franchise, which are due to leave the streaming service on Jan. 15.
Meanwhile, if you’re looking for other films to check out before they depart, the Wachowskis’ epic “Cloud Atlas” and Martin Scorsese’s Leonardo DiCaprio-fronted psychological thriller “Shutter Island” both leave Jan.

Exclusive: A different kind of reteam is in store for Ghosted, the Apple Original Films romantic action adventure film to be helmed by Dexter Fletcher. Ana de Armas will reteam with her Knives Out co-star Chris Evans in the film. Scarlett Johansson, Evans’ oft-collaborator in the Marvel movies, has amicably exited the picture in what sources describe as a scheduling conflict.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger are producing, along with Jules Daly. Evans will serve as producer and de Armas as an executive producer. The film’s writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, will also be producers. They developed the project based on an original idea of theirs and preemptively sold it to Skydance.

American Film Market Trends
Solid packages: It’s hard to recall an AFM that had as many solid packages as this one. The emergence from Covid lockdowns and the lack of a market in Toronto this year have helped boost the offering. Since we were last in your inbox, we’ve also broken news of buzzy new projects from Martin McDonagh, Daisy Ridley (pictured) and Mathieu Kassovitz, and Guy Ritchie and Jake Gyllenhaal. Yesterday, we announced a new UK road trip from arthouse director Carol Morley which has Jane Campion aboard as an exec-producer. AFM has traditionally been known for its brawn, and while that is available this market, what stands out is the number of prestige dramas. Buyers we’ve spoken to have been particularly high on the scripts for movies like Firebrand and Lee.
Who runs the world?: As the market draws to a close, that leads us to another interesting – and positive – trend, which also counters the AFM norm: the number of strong female-fronted packages. Between Lee, Firebrand, MindFall, Ballerina, Role Play, Beth And Don, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Mamma Mafia, rarely can there have been as many female-fronted projects leading the slates of the major sellers. Now we wait for the deals to drop.
Climate Content Pledge
Cop-in: David Attenborough may have been appearing on TV screens for nigh on seven decades, but until now the question of what television can do to help combat global warming was on the fringes. That all changed at this week’s Cop 26 in Glasgow, as 12 UK networks signed up to a Climate Content Pledge, which includes an uprooting of commissioning processes to consider climate themes and a doubling down on shows that help audiences understand how the world can reach net zero.
‘Collective responsibility’: Signatories to the pledge include the heads of the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 along with Discovery and Sky in the UK. Speaking at Cop, C4 CEO Alex Mahon said broadcasters have a “collective responsibility” and can use their different programming strengths to reach more audiences. Those strengths equate to quiz shows and entertainment for ITV, sport for Sky and, according to former scientist Mahon, Celebrity Trash Monsters for C4. UK TV truly is the home of plurality.
Middle Eastern In The Spotlight
Strike while the Irons is hot: Andreas had the exclusive on production wrapping on Cello this week, a Jeremy Irons and Tobin Bell horror that is the first in a new wave of English-language projects looking to film in Saudi Arabia, which has been ramping up its film and TV ambitions. Only a handful of sizable English-language movies have shot in the country in recent decades. The Russo Brothers’ Cherry was the biggest back in 2019 but the number of productions is growing as investment increasingly flows in and out of the controversial state, which remains a lightning rod for debate due to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi and human rights abuses. Oh and something about a UK football team.
Growing interest: Among productions to shoot in the country recently are a Discovery Channel documentary on the AlUla region, narrated by Irons, and an AlUla brand campaign commercial directed by Bruno Aveillan. National Geographic is due to film two programs on the region and the area has seen multiple travel programs. This month, production is due to get underway on the Gerard Butler action-thriller Kandahar from Thunder Road, which will be one of, if not the biggest, English-language movies to shoot in the country. It’s all happening. At the Cannes Film Festival this year, Saudi officials were touting the striking AlUla valley, new production facilities and the country’s film and TV tax rebate of 35%. The nation is due to host its first major film festival next month, the Red Sea International Film Festival. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
Midas Man on ice
Help!: Another hot one from Andreas this week, who had the scoop on one of the most talked about films of the moment, Midas Man, pausing production, with director Jonas Åkerlund unlikely to continue. Åkerlund is “taking a break”, according to the production, with sources indicating he is unlikely to return. More likely to come on this one as the Brian Epstein biopic seeks a new director.
New Look BBC Comedy Team
Petrie Dish: BBC Comedy Director Jon Petrie (pictured), the most powerful person in UK comedy commissioning, unveiled his new-look team this week, picking producers from some of the nation’s biggest shows in his first major intervention since taking over from Shane Allen in September. In comes Trying’s Emma Lawson, E4’s Navi Lamba and Stath Lets Flats producer Seb Barwell (temporarily), as the seven-strong team is firmed up. Petrie’s move reassembles a team that was decimated last year with a spate of departures, as his predecessor Allen, Head of Comedy Kate Daughton and Commissioning Editors Sarah Asante and Alex Moody all departed within a few weeks of each other.
Russian Out Of Space
The Challenge: Don’t miss Diana Lodderhose’s exclusive sit-down with Russian director Klim Shipenko and actor Yuliya Peresild, who last month became the first film crew to shoot scenes in Outer Space for upcoming film The Challenge. Well worth your time.

‘Rust’ Ripple Effects
Film world mourns: More than a week has now passed since the tragic death of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and, as more and more details emerge, the film world is in mourning. Tributes have flooded in from all over for the Ukrainian born DoP, who was accidentally shot in the stomach by Alec Baldwin last Thursday. As time goes on, Hutchins’ name will likely become synonymous with discussion of gun safety on sets and the global community has been looking at what it can do to ensure such an incident never happens again.

German-Jewish artist Charlotte Salomon, who was murdered in Auschwitz at age 26, and her autobiographical masterwork “Life? or Theatre?,” which was created in a two-year burst in the early 1940s, are the subjects of “Charlotte,” a unique animated biopic drama that marks a career turning point for Toronto producer Julia Rosenberg.
Rosenberg first encountered “Life? or Theatre?” — which comprises hundreds of gouache paintings, a 32,000-word journey-of-an-artist tale filled with dark family secrets and numerous text overlays and music cues — as a bat mitzvah gift. She soon developed “a very possessive personal relationship” with the book. “It’s the book I would buy and give when I fell in love,” she said.
After a decade racking up producer credits on notable Canadian dramatic and documentary features, Rosenberg decided one morning in 2012 that an animated film should be made of Salomon’s life, and set about harnessing her passion and wide network to make it so.

Keanu Reeves is no stranger to starring in some of the greatest action movies ever made having already appeared in Point Break, Speed and The Matrix, but even the actor himself must have been a little surprised by the massive success of John Wick. After a lean few years where he’d found critical and commercial adulation hard to come by, Wick looked like just another generic actioner and was written off by many as exactly that.

It’s the evolution of animation. It can be argued that “The Simpsons” opened the door for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, which in turn kicked down the door to let in shows including “Bojack Horseman,” “Archer” and “Rick & Morty.” U.S animators are serving up not only raunchy comedy but also sophisticated storytelling. Outside the U.S., animated features have a long history of telling difficult stories — most recently “The Swallows of Kabul” and “Funan” are two films that tackled horrific events. Animation aimed at adults is on the rise worldwide.
In his recently released white paper, “Adult Animation Finally Breaking Free of Its Comedy Shackles,” John Evershed, head of High Concentrate, which specializes in the packaging, development and sales of animated TV series and movies for adult audiences, notes that adult animated series have been driving ratings on both linear TV and SVODs for the past few years.

Ridley Scott has opened up about his desire to keep the ‘Alien’ franchise going with a possible third film to round out the prequel series of movies.
In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Scott opened up on how a further instalment of the film could answer a few questions that not only he has, but the franchises loyal fanbase.
“I still think there’s a lot of mileage in ‘Alien,’ but I think you’ll have to now re-evolve,” Scott said. “What I always thought when I was making it, the first one, why would a creature like this be made and why was it travelling in what I always thought was a kind of war-craft, which was carrying a cargo of these eggs. What was the purpose of the vehicle and what was the purpose of the eggs? That’s the thing to question — who, why, and...

‘John Wick’ helmer Chad Stahelski has revealed further details on the upcoming female-driven spin-off ‘Ballerina’.
Stahelski has confirmed that the ‘Underworld’ franchise filmmaker, Len Wiseman will take the helm on the film. He went on to tell Heat Vision that the film won’t be an exact replica of the Wick franchise but will still be filled with action-packed sequences.
“Having him [Wiseman] on board and approaching some of the action design from a slightly different perspective, meaning the set pieces, the character involvement, how and what he wants to do during the action sequences, makes it kind of fresh.
So, we’re not just copying ourselves over and over again with gun-fu or something like that. And because the character is different, we’re going to get a different take on things.
So, right now, I know that him and Shay [Hatten] are developing Ballerina. I’m not exactly sure what stage it’s at,...

P.S. I Still Love You reunites much of the cast of To All The Boys I've Loved Before, plus adds a few new faces. The most important new addition to the franchise is, of course, Jordan Fisher as John Ambrose, but there's a surprising actor in the second installment of the series we need to point out: Dance Moms alumna and Sia favorite Maddie Ziegler.
Ziegler pops up in a lunchroom scene, telling Lara Jean to expect some Valentine's Day extravagance from boyfriend Peter Kavinsky. "Get ready, Lara Jean. Last year, Peter sent [a singing valentine] to Gen every period," she confides. Although the actress and dancer doesn't have a big part, it's a fun surprise for longtime fans to see her play a cheerleader in P.S. I Still Love You.
While her part in the Netflix favorite is more of a cameo, this is just the beginning for Ziegler's movie appearances this year.

David Slade, director of “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch,” “Hard Candy” and “American Gods,” is attached to direct the upcoming thriller “Come Closer.” The film will be produced by Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Michael London.
Based on the novel of the same name, and written by the novel’s author Sara Gran, “Come Closer” follows a young architect who may be the victim of a demonic possession, or simply may be losing her mind. It will be fully financed and executive produced by Anton, which will also handle worldwide sales.
Recently appointed as Evp of acquisitions & co-productions in one of multiple recent growth moves at Anton, John Zois negotiated the deal and will oversee “Come Closer.”

Starz is developing a John Wick TV series spinoff called "The Continental." So dress well, because this'll be a five-star experience!
How far can a delightful joke be stretched? We’ll soon find out, because the amusing five-star hotel with likely Michelin Star dining in John Wick, which grew into being a whole underground franchise with its own governing bylaws and multiple, unique-to-assassins currencies in two (soon to be three) sequel films, is about to be the basis of its own TV show, titled The Continental! So, dress well, because the spinoff is headed to Starz.
Plans have been in the works for a small-screen expansion of the big screen John Wick mythology going back to 2017, when film directors Chad Stahelski and Derek Kolstad – after initially floating the ultimately-nixed idea to make first sequel John Wick: Chapter 2 into a prequel – revealed that studio Lionsgate...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 26 films submitted this year for consideration for the Animated Feature Film Oscar this morning and there were few surprises on this list.
Notably absent, however, was “Leap!” a animated film produced in France where it was known as “Ballerina” but released in the U.S. this August with vocal performances by Elle Fanning, Carly Rae Jepsen and Dane DeHaan, among others.

There’s something about a film focusing on a young, aspiring ballerina in the late 1800s that makes it easy to understand why this animated effort didn’t have the marketing push normally associated with the ventures that come out of the animation behemoths. Leap! is a movie focusing on the struggle of dreams, highlighted by picturesque (and/or dark) scenes of gaslit Paris with the incomplete Eiffel Tower in the background. There aren’t a lot of toys to sell here.
It makes you wish for a different world, like that recent commercial that imagines the day when we celebrate scientists and have their pictures on trading cards.
Felicie (Elle Fanning) is an orphan who lives out her days in a dreary orphanage with her best friend, Victor (Dane DeHaan). She dances the days away while plotting with Victor to escape. She dreams of joining a ballet company in Paris,...

With a sneaky comic tone swerving between earnest compassion and snarky derision, a middle-aged protagonist chewed up by ennui, and a colorful array of character actors populating a kitsch-Americana setting, “Downsizing” has all the hallmarks of an Alexander Payne film. And yet, his latest work plays just as much like a blown-up, fun home image of Mike Judge’s “Idiocracy,” as it too uses the conventions of science fiction to mount a caustic social satire. And like Judge’s 2006 dystopian comedy (which feels less and far fetched each passing day, as the meme goes), “Downsizing” is rife with witty visual touches and inspired comic premises but never quite comes together as fully successful whole.
The premise itself is a gem. In some not-so-far-off future, forward-thinking Norwegians have discovered a way shrink objects down to 1/12th scale and have embarked on a global campaign to convince us that it’s time to “get small.

Talk about the dog days of summer. This weekend marked the worst box office in this century.
If “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” (Lionsgate) holds on to the top position for a third time next week, it would mark the lowest gross in memory to repeat again. The actioner dropped a ho-hum 53 per cent, boosted by the absence of any real competition. Count stars Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson among rare winners at the moment.
Domestic theaters grossed around $65 million in movie ticket sales this weekend. (That doesn’t count the revenue for closed circuit live showings of the Mayweather/McGregor fight which would have placed it in the Top Ten.)
That’s about seven million tickets sold total. The number is easily a record low for this century. And you have to reach back to World War II to match the attendance numbers. More people went the movies the...

No need to sugar coat it, this was a miserable weekend. The combined gross of the top twelve failed to total over $50 million, something that hasn't happened in an August weekend in over 20 years. In fact, the combined $49 million for the top twelve is the worst since the top twelve combined for $43.5 million in late September 2001. Making matters worse, with next weekend seeing no major, new wide releases things aren't going to improve until It arrives on September 8. Keeping things to this weekend, The Hitman's Bodyguard finished in the top spot for a second weekend in a row with an estimated $10 million. That gross, however, appears a bit precarious. It wouldn't be at all surprising to see actuals dip below the double-digit mark. Should that happen this would be the first weekend in two years to not have a film break double digits over the three-day. The last time was...
