Not the usual ending

Warning: Spoilers
In mini-series, the story often ends super happily. No matter how bad things may look for the main characters in the episode before, everything just works out during the last 30-60 minutes of the series.

"Baby Reindeer" chooses a different path. Without any major drama, Donny finally gets rid of his antagonist, Martha. Here, the scriptwriters could have devoted the rest of the episode to sweetening and glossing over everything. Let Donny get his beloved Teri. Let him become the successful stand-up comedian that he has struggled so long to be.

But Donny is broken, traumatized, and the fact that Martha is out of his life doesn't mean he is fixed. At least not yet.

A few scenes stand out in the last episode, in addition to Donny's confession to his parents which others have also mentioned.

Martha's voice message to Donny about the background of "Baby Reindeer" is phenomenal. As sick and vile as her character is, I as a viewer suddenly sympathize with her. Feel sorry for her. Just like Donny did at the beginning of the series.

Donny's visit to Darren (a man who raped him), where as a viewer one might expect (and perhaps even hope for) some form of confrontation or revenge from Donny's side. Instead, Darren offers him a job again, and Donny accepts.

"Baby Reindeer" does not choose the easy, stereotypical solutions or reactions to deep wounds and traumas. And because of that, it becomes so much a better series.

Drama doesn't get much better than this.

After someone recorded Donny's big revelation, he becomes an online sensation, but he slips up, allowing Martha to get hold of his phone number, a torrent of abuse begins.

Oh my days, Richard Gadd, what you've done here is really special, this has been an incredibly thought provoking drama, one that's got a lot of people talking.

The series deserved an amazing conclusion, and it got one. I can't speak highly enough of it, several scenes stood out, Donny confronting Darrien, Martha's sentencing, and of course that unbelievable scene where Donny details his tragedies to his parents, that scene had me choked up.

I don't need to throw any superlatives at it, because if you're reading this, then you've binge watched it like I have.

Drama at its best.

10/10.

There is a lot of artistic value in the way they handled this dark subject

I guess the overall telling of this story has various points in which we see a series of crimes and violations within the life of the main character (Donny). I felt myself feeling very connected to Donny throughout this series as the narrative follows all his inner struggles and thoughts and I must say the acting is absolutely outstanding which is why I have rated this 10 stars.

I think basically as the story unwinds more is revealed about the lives of the people involved in the misdemeanours and disturbing behaviours. We are made to believe that beneath it all is people who have just had a tough life and escaped into a fantasy. Which, is all very beautiful and progressive and I just eat it up every time it's sold to me.

Show Faltered Halfway, Petered Out
vilafire23 April 2024
This show really lost its footing after the episode with the grooming. From then on Martha, the highlight of the show, was relegated to the background. In that vacuum went a bunch of TMI navel-gazing. And questions. Why isn't he reporting this new thing to the police? Why didn't his girlfriend report the assault without his permission? Etc, etc. Why is he rude to everyone?

This really does feel like a stage play, a one-man show, in that it's a shaggy dog story. I get why that's the case- - -real life doesn't always have a perfect dramatic structure. But the way the middle and end of the story was told felt anti-climactic and I wish the creator took more liberties with the story. It's not a documentary, after all.

I'm sure the majority of viewers, especially those used to the "and then, and then" storytelling style of reality shows (and modern tv in general) loved those final three boring episodes. I did really, really like the first few episodes but the creator took it down a certain psychological lane that may be novel for television but didn't make great tv.

Would like to see this guy do some dark comedy thriller material.

Ruined it

Warning: Spoilers
First time ever writing a review, I made an account specially for this.

This last episode reminded me of the last episode of "GoT", an absolute fail. Through this entire show we see the miserable life of Danny, and when finally he gets the opportunity to change his life after the video of him went viral on youtube, finally changing his life around, he turns completely mad for no reason, making a wall of Martha, listening non stop to her voice mails, and going back to his rapist. Also his ex coming to pay his rent and asking him to move back even though she clearly was avoiding him all this show because of what he did to her. Nothing from this plot made any sense of Danny taking these last decisions or the side charachters, ultimately ruining the entire show.
