Alfred Hitchcok and To Catch a Thief: An Appreciation (2002)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Of the four featurettes on the TO CATCH A THIEF disc this one here might be the most entertaining even if it has very little to do with the actual film. Hitchcock's daughter Pat, granddaughter Mary Stone and Sylvette Baudrot are interviewed about what the director was like off the set. We really do get some terrific stories from the family about the type of humor Hitch had as well as what he liked to do when he wasn't filming movies. Both the daughter and granddaughter talk about some of the scenes in TO CATCH A THIEF and mention how they visited the locations as children so this might have been why the director selected them. Another great story deals with Hitchcock and his food fetishes, which included a hatred for eggs, which is why in one scene you see a woman put her cigarette out in one. The best moment happens when the granddaughter talks about taking a class on her grandfather in college just so she could see his movies and how on the weekends she'd go to him and ask additional questions. I won't ruin the grade the two got on a paper they wrote but it's pretty funny.
