Ken and Anne both feel the need to confront their respective fathers, Ken in wanting some security for a future for him and Lester, especially important now that Ken knows that Lester dreams of living with Jimmy, and Anne in trying to understand why her life has turned out the way it has. The issue with Lester is made all the more difficult when he comes to understand some of the realities of farm life. Without Lester present, Jimmy demonstrates his fitness to be Lester's guardian. Based partly on those parental encounters, Ken and Anne turn to others. Lou, now living in a nursing home, fights his adjustment to this new living situation when lucid, and falls back into believing he living in the past when not lucid.
