Following a handful of supporting roles in “Tag,” “Green Book” and “The Irishman,” Sebastian Maniscalco makes his first bid for leading-man status with “About My Father,” a family comedy sourced from the same semi-autobiographical material that made his stand-up a commercial and cultural phenomenon. To say it’s better than all three “Meet the Parents” films may be a dubious compliment, but it’s one made more significant because it co-stars Robert De Niro — and more importantly, actually features recognizable human behavior amidst its suitably outlandish set pieces. Whether or not Maniscalco has a legitimate future as a movie star, he proves a likeable presence as a romantic lead, while director Laura Terruso skillfully delivers comedic payoffs that tap into his wheelhouse while introducing him to a wider audience.

Riki Lindhome (Another Period) is set as a series regular opposite Amy Poehler in Fox’s animated family comedy Duncanville, from Poehler and her Paper Kite Productions, The Simpsons veteran Mike Scully and his wife, former Simpsons writer-producer Julie Scully, 20th Century Fox TV and Universal TV. It’s slated to premiere during the 2019-20 season.
Written by Mike and Julie Scully, Duncanville centers on Duncan (voiced by Poehler), a spectacularly average 15-year-old boy with a rich fantasy life and the people in his world.
Lindhome will play Kimberly, Duncan’s ]awkward, emotional, 12-year-old sister. She can hold grudges forever while waiting patiently for revenge. She sometimes says hurtful things but doesn’t get why people are upset because, “What? I’m just being honest.” All emotions all the time, nobody’s problems are bigger than hers. Kimberly fears that she is the forgotten middle child, and she’s not wrong.

It's never a dull day on set when you're acting alongside violent puppets and dismembered limbs. Out now in select Us theaters and VOD platforms, and coming to home video on September 25th from Rlje Films, Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich balances brutal kills and zany humor, with lead character Edgar (Thomas Lennon) navigating the blood-stained carnage after an army of Nazi puppets come to life. Ahead of the movie's upcoming home media release, Daily Dead recently chatted with Lennon about his approach to the comedy and violence in the film, his familiarity with the Puppet Master franchise prior to coming on set for the new film, getting his son a dismembered hand cameo in the movie, and watching The Littlest Reich with an audience that embraced the movie's goriest moments.

Over the years, I’ve been pretty vocal about how much I adore horror comedies, and considering how challenging the world at large has been over the last few years, it’s truly my favorite subsection of the genre to disappear into as of late. There have been numerous brilliant humorous horror movies over the years, but I thought now would be the perfect time to celebrate 10 films from the modern landscape of genre cinema that have not only been largely under-appreciated by fans, but also do a killer job of finding new ways to merge the funnies with the frights.
Just a note before we begin: I purposefully left off films like Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, What We Do in the Shadows, Cabin in the Woods, Zombieland, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, The Frighteners and projects of that caliber, because I feel like some of those...

Man, Netflix – you are all over the place this September. A horror parody, an old and a new raunch-friendly animated series, a remorselessly bleak film from Angelina Jolie and, somehow, even more Narcos episodes? (Viewers may remember that last season jettisoned a pretty key character.) Streaming-wise, you'll also get a trio of personal visions from comedy writers and a cavalcade of vintage-ish sitcoms courtesy of Hulu. Here's what's you'll be logging on and checking out over the next month. (For our standard TV recommendations, click here.)

Fun? Nope, not for us. Dinner? Mostly offscreen. Moms? Check… though even here, in a movie allegedly devoted to mom time, they have to share the spotlight with dads. Wtf?
Fun Mom Dinner (the title sounds like a Japanglish attempt to sound cool) starts off promising enough, with Toni Collette’s (Krampus, Miss You Already) Kate complaining about how child-focused the interactions of so many women can be — “I’m mommed out,” she sighs, with a refreshing lack of reverence for motherhood, something that cinema is sorely lacking — and with Katie Aselton’s (The Gift,...

Jordan Peele’s latest career incarnation could have been fodder for “Key & Peele,” the hit Comedy Central sketch show in which he and Keegan-Michael Key skewered modern racial issues. But Peele wrote had written a horror movie about race, and it needed a director. That created a challenge: After William Crain (“Blacula”), Bill Gunn (“Ganja & Hesse”), and Ernest Dickerson (“Bones,” “The Walking Dead”), how many black horror directors can you name? (The savviest genre fans out there might also remember James Bond III, very much a real person, who directed “Def By Temptation” 27 years ago.)
Needless to say, it was slim pickings. “I first pitched this as a movie no one would make,” Peele said. “About halfway through writing the script, I realized I was the only person who could direct it.”
However, Peele’s feature directing debut, “Get Out,” also brings him into the rarified class of horror directors...

I’m a big fan of horror comedy. It’s a combination that isn’t easy to get right, but when it is done well it can be hilarious. A couple of my favorite horror comedies in recent years include The Cabin in the Woods, Tucker Dale Vs. Evil, and Hell Baby. Horror comedies have been around forever, though, and I had to include one of them in the 1950s horror movie column that I’ve been writing this month for Halloween.
The next film on my list is the 1959 film The Headless Ghost. The story follows three college students, two Americans and a girl from Denmark, who take a day trip from London to visit an old English castle called Ambrose Castle. The three students hide in the castle after it is closed to see if the legends of the ghosts they heard about were real. There they find the headless ghost.

We have now, apparently, reached the stage of Liam Neeson’s action career where he’s ready to take spoofing it to the next natural stage – an entire action comedy on the big screen. All right, so we don’t know for sure that it will be exactly that, but The Revenger sounds like it could be.Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer has come aboard to direct the film for Universal, based on Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant’s script. Little is known about the screenplay besides the name, but given that it comes from the men behind the first two Night At The Museum films, Hell Baby and Balls Of Fury, expect silliness. Neeson has shown he’s more than willing to be funny in the past, most famously still in Extras, but also in the likes of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, The Lego Movie and Non-Stop. Fleischer,...

Good day, horror fans. I trust that most people reading this story were curled up with a fabulous scary movie (or The Walking Dead, more likely) rather than tuning into the Oscars, a ceremony where horror has been almost completely sidelined for the last 87 years. Maybe you.re watching the now-on-Blu-ray anthology V/H/S Viral, which includes the previously unreleased segment "Gorgeous Vortex" from Todd Lincoln, or the madness that is Adam Green.s Digging Up the Marrow, which was released on Friday. In smaller news, it looks like micro-budget horror factor Blumhouse Productions will be teaming Mortal Instruments director Harold Zwart with screenwriter Robert Ben Garant (Hell Baby) for a family-friendly horror. And the "shot on an iPhone" thriller Hooked Up was picked up by indie distributors Uncork.d, who will release the flick on VOD on April 7. And now for the best three minutes of your life.

After spectacularly failing to launch a franchise with Screen Gems’ awful The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, director Harald Zwart is scaling down for his next film, having signed on to direct a microbudgeted horror flick for Blumhouse Productions.
Details about the pic are being kept tightly under wraps for now, but one intriguing aspect of the project, scripted by Robert Ben Garant (Jessabelle), is that it’s being aimed at families, not typically a target audience for horror films.
Still, if any studio can pull off a family-friendly horror movie, it’s Blumhouse, which has taken the genre by storm in the past few years with titles like Paranormal Activity, The Purge and Insidious.

Jason Blum’s micro-budgeted approach to horror has paid off tremendously for his Blumhouse Productions over the past few years, thanks to the gargantuan success of the Paranormal Activity and Insidious series, in addition to films like Sinister and The Purge, two stand-alones so profitable that both have sequels in the works.
This summer, Blum will unveil his latest frightfest, Jessabelle, in hopes of launching yet another lucrative franchise. Now, the first trailer for that film has landed, and you can check it out below:

"That thing on these tapes is not your mother." Last month we saw Mark Webber encounter some terror in the trailer for the SXSW selected thriller 13 Sins, but now he's venturing into the horror genre with Jessabelle. The film follows Sarah Snook as the titular character, a woman returning to her childhood home in Louisiana to recuperate from a horrific car accident. However, rather than finding peace there, she comes face to face with a long-tormented spirit that has been seeking her return. Webber plays a friend who tries to help her with this supernatural mystery. Looks like a standard horror film, but the main character being confined to a wheelchair changes things up since she can't escape easily. Maybe it'll be good? Watch! Here's the first trailer for Kevin Greutert's Jessabelle, originally from Yahoo: Jessabelle is directed by Kevin Greutert (Saw VI, Saw 3D: The Final Chapter), written...

Plenty of movies have taken inspiration from Rosemary’s Baby over the decades, including, recently, Hell Baby and Devil’s Due. But NBC is going the direct route by simply adapting Ira Levin‘s original novel into a four-part miniseries. Zoe Saldana and Patrick J. Jason Blum's Blumhouse is becoming something of a modern day Hammer Horror production company. The constant flow of horror projects from the Blum is quite impressive. Some don't quite hit the mark whilst others are superbly crafted little horror treats. 'The Veil' is the latest small budget genre production that is set to revolve around the theme of cults and mass suicides. And the project, to be helmed by Phil Joanou ('Final Analysis'), has landed its leading man in the form of Thomas Jane ('The Mist'). Joanou will helm from a script provided by 'Hell Baby' star and co-writer Robert Ben Garant whilst Universal are poised to distribute....

From the minds of two Reno 911! veterans, Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, comes Hell Baby, a comedy that’s out there, but not always in a way that results in the laughs the script so obviously craves. Running jokes abound throughout the film, but few of them ever land with more than a thud, and really it’s only when the two writers are on screen as oddly badass exorcists that laughs really start flowing. Other than that, gags like unwanted house guests (Keegan-Michael Key), a possessed pregnant woman (Leslie Bibb), and stacked boxes don’t achieve much beyond making the audience hope that eventually the movie will find something clever to do with it in the nth repetition of a joke. Those hops go unanswered most of the time though. Ultimately a few awkward moments and the over-the-top finale where the titular baby finally appears are the only laughs the film really earns,...

Today, we shine the spotlight not on movies but rather on the poster art that was attached to them in 2013. This past year saw some truly awesome poster art make its way onto the internet and our walls, to the point that it was no easy task to cut the list down to only ten. In fact, it was downright painful to be forced to exclude such memorable imagery as a devil baby rocking out in the womb (Hell Baby), Sheri Moon Zombie staring us down in creepy skeletal makeup (The Lords of Salem) and a scary-looking tree standing in front of a scary-looking house (The Conjuring) - which is why I simply couldn’t bring myself to make any further cuts than those.
So instead of the planned ten, let’s instead take a look at my personal picks for the top 13 coolest horror posters of 2013!

Despite a remarkable volume of cliched, unmemorable or otherwise awful offerings, 2013 was actually a fairly solid year for horror – especially if your tastes veer off the beaten path. While most mainstream fare ranged from passable (Evil Dead) to abominable (Texas Chainsaw 3D), alternative fare flourished, not merely offering some great, unique entertainment but introducing or establishing talent that promises to become the genre’s next great generation of creators.
While few of the films included on the list ultimately made my overall Top Ten list for the year – good as they were, competition from other films was enviably steep in 2013 – those I chose stood out or distinguished themselves, in full or in part, for offering something original, interesting, or even just particularly effective. Meanwhile, a handful of other experiences or multi-media releases enhanced my appreciation for horror in the last 12 months, which if nothing else will give fans something to...

I’m not going to lie – Hell Baby is made for a specific audience. One part goofy 80s horror, one part spookily inspired mindless comedy, Reno 911! alums Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant deliver a maternal story with a sinister bite unlike any other minds could produce. We’ve all seen their fake police skits, some of which include a naked man with a birdhouse on his pecker or Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) from Community tied to a bed with a dildo on his forehead, and that’s essentially the same kind of comedy these two serious horror fans bring to their very own brand of horror/comedy. Babies sure are little devils, but Lennon and Garant prove your screaming toddlers could have turned out a lot meaner, more vicious, and a hell of a lot more demonic.

Twenty-five years later, another funnyman with not-as-beautiful white hair is stepping into Leslie Nielsen‘s shoes to reboot the Naked Gun franchise. Ed Helms will become the next Detective Frank Drebin in a new script conjured up from the minds of Thomas Lennon and R. Ben Garant. If you ignore this summer’s atrocious Hell Baby, they’re the highly talented writing duo behind Reno 911! and Night at the Museum. Garant and Lennon have been tapped to tackle the franchise with a new spin on the detective, which is probably good news considering the enormity of what they have to live up to with this project. Nielsen was Drebin, and to make this a straight redo would be a large misstep; no matter what Helms does with the role, people are going to see the cracks in the character and remember what they loved about the original. The Naked Gun franchise was a peculiar, particular...

“It’s true what they say: Cops and women don’t mix. It’s like eating a spoonful of Drano; sure, it’ll clean you out, but it’ll leave you hollow inside.” - The Naked Gun
It looks like Paramount Pictures is developing a reboot of their hilarious '80s and '90s comedy franchise, The Naked Gun. It's been forever since I've seen any of those movies, but I remember laughing my ass off when I watched them. The original films were based on the 1982 ABC spoof series Police Squad!, which was cancelled after six episodes.
The studio has cast Ed Helms (The Hangover) in the lead role of Detective Frank Drebin, who was previously played by Leslie Nielsen. I guess if anyone could try to explicate that style of comedy, it would be Helms.
The studio has also hired Thomas Lennon and R. Ben Garant to write the script for the film.

Next up in great movies that do not really need a remake: The Naked Gun. Well, maybe ‘great’ is a somewhat hyperbolic term, but one cannot deny that The Naked Gun and the sequels it spawned are still among the most entertaining spoofs to come out of the 1980s. With the current trend of rebooting everything made from 1980-1999, it’s no surprise that The Naked Gun has come up for a remake at Paramount, this time with Ed Helms taking on the lead role that Leslie Nielsen made famous.
Helms will play Detective Frank Drebin, the ultra-serious and largely incompetent cop that Nielsen played in the original Police Squad! TV series and the three Naked Gun films. The Naked Gun reboot could very well relaunch the franchise if Helms can manage to equal Nielsen’s ability to deliver ridiculous lines as though he completely believes in them.

We were big fans of Anthony Burns’ debut film, the visually strong coming-of-ager sans pretension and a nod to the Dazed and Confused sorts with just the right character set. Skateland deserved a little more fanfare than the one it got back in 2011, but Burns round two North of Hell, should receive a lot more fanfare with its cast alone. Pitting Patrick Wilson, Jordana Brewster, Kevin McKidd with Katherine Heigl, this dramedy began shooting in March-ish of this year…so we’re banking on this being already prepped for festival season.

Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant have been laughing at and with and around each other since before Americans got to know them as members of the State, the comedy group whose MTV sketch series debuted twenty years ago this December. But Reno 911!, another cultish show they co-created (along with Kerri Kenney-Silver, also of the State), has also reached a milestone: The wacky 2003 to 2009 series debuted on Comedy Central ten years ago. To mark the occasion, we asked Lennon and Garant — who wrote, directed, and star in the indie horror-comedy Hell Baby — to pick five scenes each in which Reno’s signature improvisation threatened to go off the rails, and they threw in an extra one for good measure.Thomas Lennon's Top Five The Scene: “Picking Up Guns on the Highway” (Season 4, Episode 3) Tom: Of everything we’ve ever done in any of our TV shows, picking up guns...
