The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards did not disappoint in terms of solid, energetic performances as well as chaos that fit the brand of the award show. From Sabrina Carpenter’s opening performance and raunchy improvisation at the end of “Nonsense,” to Taylor Swift fangirling over the Nsync Reunion, pop culture fed itself many times over Tuesday night. Shakira and Diddy gave comprehensive glimpses into their careers before receiving the Video Vanguard and the Global Icon Awards, respectively.
What looked like a dangerous stage malfunction for Olivia Rodrigo’s set during “Vampire” transitioned as planned into a live performance of “get him back!” and what looked like an error turned out to be a live re-enactment of the “Vampire” music video. In addition to serving as the emcee for the 2023 VMAs, Nicki Minaj performed during the awards show, even treating fans to a preview of a new song at the end of her solo performance of “Last Time I Saw You.”
Minaj initially took the stage at the top of Tuesday night’s 2023 MTV Video Music Awards wearing a light pink bridal ensemble, veil and all, where she urged the audience to applaud and cheer for the performers who kicked off the show, Lil Wayne and Olivia Rodrigo.
She then admitted that she realized she didn’t buckle her shoes: “1, 2, buckle my mother f—ing shoes,” she said.
After that bleeped curse she recalled how there had been some concern about her hosting the show, with executives worrying about her saying something inappropriate, but she reassured viewers she could control herself.

Night now has a chess master on its roster.
Levy Rozman, an International Master and the man behind YouTube‘s most-subscribed-to chess channel, GothamChess, has signed with the Austin- and Los Angeles-based management company for representation in all areas.
Rozman, who’s 27 and based in New York City, has been playing chess since he was five years old.
“My parents had to sign me up for some after-school classes,” he tells Tubefilter. “It was a big argument because I liked to draw, like most kids, so my dad was like, ‘We should put him into art class because it’ll keep him occupied.’ My mom was like, ‘Well, he should play chess,’ because both sides of our family were originally from the former Soviet Union. Chess is part of a kid’s upbringing there. It has benefits for the brain, or whatever.”

The defamation suit facing Netflix’s hit limited series “The Queen’s Gambit” has ended in a draw between the streamer and Georgian chess grandmaster Nona Gaprindashvili, who had contention with a line about her in the show that she deemed “grossly sexist and belittling.”
The two parties settled out of court, they informed the judge in a filing on Monday. The stalemate comes after a January ruling that Gaprindashvili’s claim had merit, with a judge rejecting Netflix’s motion to dismiss on the grounds that works of fiction are immune from defamation lawsuits if they disparage real people.

On Thursday, a California judge refused to dismiss the defamation lawsuit brought by chess grandmaster Nona Gaprindashvili against Netflix in September over what she said was a “manifestly false” reference to her in the finale of “The Queen’s Gambit.”
In the episode, as the fictional chess prodigy played by Anya-Taylor Joy prepares to face off with a male opponent, Gaprindashvili is referred to by a commentator as a “female world champion [who] has never faced men.” The lawsuit calls the comment “manifestly false, as well as being grossly sexist and belittling.”

Next month, Netflix is rolling out a ton of great new Halloween-themed content, including a bunch of must-see originals like The Haunting of Bly Manor, A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting and Rebecca. Unfortunately, though, it’s also losing a lot of horror films in October that would’ve made for perfect seasonal viewing.
On October 2nd, both Cult of Chucky – the last Chucky flick before the reboot – and Truth or Dare – that’s the 2017 TV movie, not the 2018 Blumhouse production – are being removed from Netflix’s library. The bulk of the horror titles leaving in October are, ironically, being removed on October 31st, though. So, if you’re hoping to do an Underworld marathon this Halloween or rewatch classics like Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow or The Silence of the Lambs, make sure you don’t leave it until the day itself.

Thor: Ragnarok was a breath of fresh air for both the title character and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. The studio’s output was always heavily laced with laughs, but in the hands of director Taika Waititi, Thor’s third solo outing became the closest thing the McU has ever made to an all-out comedy.
Fans lapped it up, with the buddy movie dynamic between Thor and Bruce Banner carrying the pic, along with the introduction of several scene-stealing supporting characters including Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, Waititi’s Korg and Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster. Even Idris Elba, who had been vocally critical of his time working for Marvel in the past, praised the experience he had on Ragnarok.

Even in a post-Endgame world, Thor: Ragnarok is widely considered to be one of the greatest McU installments thanks to its rip-roaring action and larger-than-life characters. Hell, we’d argue that Jeff Goldblum’s memorable stint as the Grandmaster was worth the price of admission alone (“you’ve been pardoned… from life!”).
There was, however, one character who was left on the sidelines: Jane Foster, the best-in-class astrophysicist played by Natalie Portman. It’s by no means the first time that Portman’s character was only mentioned in passing, but it left many wondering whether the actress would ever return to the McU in the future.
Thankfully, those rumors have been put to bed: Natalie Portman is due to reprise her role for Thor: Love and Thunder. And it seems the actress is already itching to rejoin the likes of Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor Odinson) for what...

“Black Panther” is on track to be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to contend in the top Oscar categories. It may well be the first film in the franchise to reap an acting bid. While that will be a worthy achievement, it is shocking that not a single performance from the first 20 films in the McU merited any attention from the acting branch of the academy.
With that in mind, let’s look back at 10 McU performances that deserved Oscar consideration but didn’t get any starting with Black Panther himself.

“Black Panther” could well be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to garner an acting nomination. While a laudable achievement, this also means that in the first 20 films in the franchise, not one cast member has merited attention from the academy.
Surely that’s ridiculous? Yes, fantasy and sci-fi films don’t typically register with the acting branch. The three films in “The Lord of The Rings” series, which received a combined total of 30 Academy Award nominations and 17 wins, only managed a singular acting bid – Best Supporting Actor for Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey. That trilogy featured a bunch of other outstanding performances from a brilliant cast (Andy Serkis as Gollum! Andy Serkis as Smeagol! Andy Serkis!).

Thor: Ragnarok arguably has the most colorful cast of any entry in the McU. Everyone in the threequel is fighting to chew more of the screen than anyone else. There’s Thor himself, Loki, Valkyrie, Hela, Korg, Skurge and, last but not least, the Grandmaster, the ruler of Sakaar brought to life by the one and only Jeff Goldblum. As his fate was left open-ended at the end of the film, it’s totally possible that the character could return, and it seems the actor would definitely be up for more.
While promoting his role in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Goldblum went on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where the chat soon turned to the actor’s recent appearance in the Marvel universe. Kimmel expressed his desire to see Goldblum get his own spinoff movie as the Grandmaster and asked the star if this is something he’d be interested in as well.

A lot of people died in Joe and Anthony Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War. Aside from all those who fell victim to Thanos’ devastating Snap of Doom – Bucky, Spider-Man, Black Panther, etc. – there were also a few characters who met their end earlier on, such as Gamora and Loki, among others. But one individual whose fate seems a bit up in the air at the moment is Benicio del Toro’s The Collector.
Though the film strongly suggests that the Mad Titan took his life while obtaining the Reality Stone from him, it’s never made explicitly clear what happened to the character and if you ask del Toro himself, he thinks The Collector is still alive and well. Jeff Goldblum and the Marvel Cinematic Universe are two things you wouldn’t have put in the same sentence five years ago, and yet here we are.
Thanks to Thor: Ragnarok and the creative genius of Taika Waititi, Goldblum clinched the role of the Grandmaster, Sakaar’s most eccentric resident and the mastermind (sadist?) behind the Contest of Champions. He was undoubtedly one of the most memorable supporting players ever to grace the McU, and it seems Goldblum is not opposed to one day returning to the franchise at some point in the future. (Obviously, there are a ton of spoilers ahead for the end of “Avengers: Infinity War.” Read on at your own risk, if you’re someone who has both not seen the movie yet still cares about spoilers.)
Everyone who saw the ending of “Avengers: Infinity War” is wondering where the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to go in “Avengers 4.”
The fateful cliffhanger found Thanos (Josh Brolin), the big bad guy that the McU has teased for six years, finally making his way to Earth in search of the Infinity Stones. Just about all the heroes of Marvel’s universe turned up to oppose the Mad Titan’s plan: Gather the all-powerful stones into his weapon, the Infinity Gauntlet, and use them to near-instantly wipe out half of all life in the universe.
“Infinity War” ends with Thanos finally getting the final stone, the Mind Stone, and snapping his fingers — accomplishing his goal and causing half of everyone everywhere, including the McU’s heroes, to turn to dust and disappear. Fans have been wondering just how the McU will deal with that situation, and the still-alive Thanos, in “Avengers 4.” But like the coming of Thanos, it’s possible the McU has been teasing a solution, and a larger look at its universe, all along. The last clue came in “Infinity War” itself, with the short appearance of one of Marvel’s weirdest characters: The Collector.
Also Read: 'Avengers: Infinity War' - The Infinity Stones Could Have Their Own Agenda
In the McU, the Collector (Benicio del Toro) is a strange man who does as his name suggests — he collects everything he can. In the Marvel comics, though, the Collector is a lot more fleshed out. He’s one of a small group of powerful, immortal and nearly invulnerable beings called the Elders of the Universe, each of which is the sole surviving member of the oldest civilizations in the universe.
Fans of the comics know the significance of the Collector, but so far, he’s only enjoyed small-scale appearances in the McU movies — he was in the post-credits scene of “Thor: The Dark World,” when Thor (Chris Hemsworth) brought him the Reality Stone (Aka the Aether) for safekeeping. And he had a couple scenes in the middle of “Guardians of the Galaxy,” with the Guardians trying to sell him the Orb, which housed the Power Infinity Stone.
The Collector appears in “Infinity War” as well, although it’s not really him. When the Guardians reach Knowhere to try to get the Reality Stone from the Collector before Thanos, they find Thanos threatening him and beating him up and stuff. But it turns out the Collector isn’t really there — it’s all a ruse by Thanos, using the Reality Stone to capture Gamora (Zoe Saldana). The fate of the Collector is unknown, but we think it’s extremely likely that Marvel didn’t kill him off-screen after what amounts to a cameo appearance.
Also Read: Everything That Happened in 'Avengers: Infinity War' May Have Been Part of a Cosmic Test
Instead, it seems like the McU is building up to something with the Elders. The Collector isn’t the only one to show up in the McU so far — the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), one of the antagonists in “Thor: Ragnarok,” is also one of the Elders. He runs a big gladiator arena on Sakaar in “Ragnarok,” and his deal is big, involved games. He’s also best friends with the Collector in the comics.
So there are two super-powerful, super-old Elders of the Universe hanging around as Thanos goes gathering his Infinity Stones, and one of them loves games. In the comics, the Grandmaster has created cosmic-scale games more than once that use the Avengers and other heroes as pawns. Once, the Grandmaster even used Earth heroes in a game against Death — to get Death to resurrect the Collector after his death.
There’s some evidence a game could be afoot in “Infinity War,” and it has to do with what Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) sees when he looks into the future on Titan. Strange makes sure to tell Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) that if things should come down to protecting the Time Stone or protecting the heroes, the Time Stone comes first. But when the moment comes, Strange trades the Time Stone to save Tony’s life, at odds with exactly what he said he’d do.
Also Read: 'Avengers: Infinity War' -- Here's What Happened Next in the Comic Book Version of the Story
We repeatedly see other heroes do the same thing: Gamora gives up the Soul Stone’s location to save Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) trades the Space Stone to save Thor. Add to that Vision (Paul Bettany) and Captain America (Chris Evans) repeatedly telling each other “we don’t trade lives,” and we get a clear ethos from the heroes: They won’t sacrifice people. That’s exactly at odds with Thanos, who sacrifices Gamora and, indirectly, all his lieutenants to get the stones.
Strange changed his plan once he looked into the future, specifically giving up the Time Stone after saying he wouldn’t. That would make sense — if Strange realized the fight with Thanos was actually part of a larger game and winning it required a long view and change in tactics. And it seems weird that “Infinity War” would just drop the Collector into the movie for what amounts to a quick cameo, unless there’s more to his story.
If that’s the case, then the ultimate conclusion of the Thanos battle could hinge on impressing the Collector (and maybe the Grandmaster) and winning the game, rather than beating Thanos. That would provide a way to undo Thanos’ universe-wrecking snap, and give the heroes a way of beating Thanos without actually having to fight the Mad Titan, since they’ve proven they might not be able to beat him while he has the Infinity Stones.
