Featured review
The new season is definitely better than the last one, but it was quite disappointing to see Utsav Sarkar replacing Adarsh Gourav.
The third season of Hostel Daze is not as good as the first season, but is definitely a major improvement from the second season. Thankfully TVF put together a better team to create this season and also gave us six episodes instead of five.
WHAT'S GOOD :
1. It's difficult to match up to the writing of the first season, where every line was a punch line, but still the writers have done a commendable job in this season, for the most part. It looks like some kind of effort has gone into the making of this season, something that was very much missing from the last one. Episode 4 (Dosti Ka Udhar) and Episode 5 (G. S. H. A) are the best episodes of this season with the quality of writing matching up to the first season.
2. This season has six episodes; it seems as if TVF is trying to make-up for the last season by giving us an extra episode, than what it usually offers. Characters don't disappear for no reason after one or two episodes; the six main characters are present in every episode, and the jokes are actually funny this time. Fixing the issues of the second season would definitely count as a step in the right direction.
3. Nikhil Vijay as Jhantoo is once again the most valuable player of the season, holding all the threads together and adding depth to the screenplay with his powerful performance. We are all aware of Nikhil Vijay's comic timing, after having watched numerous videos of his on YouTube, but this season tries to explore the emotional side of Nikhil as well, and he leaves you stunned with his brilliance in those scenes. The fifth episode (G. S. H. A), centred on Jatin Kishore, gives you a hint of the massive untapped potential that Nikhil Vijay possesses as an actor; I really hope more filmmakers notice him because he is truly an incredible talent.
4. Talha Siddiqui is the new addition to the writing team this season, and his presence truly added a lot of weight to the creative team. The fourth episode (Dosti Ka Udhar), which was written by him, is one of two episodes that stood out this season for me. The song 'Udhar Rap' sung, written and composed by Talha was also quite enjoyable. I am glad that for once someone came back to TVF, unlike the scenario prevalent in the last two years, in which a whole bunch of individuals moved away from TVF.
WHAT'S NOT SO GOOD :
1. The replacement of Adarsh Gourav with Utsav Sarkar for the role of Ankit Pandey was a terrible decision. This decision made by the creative team of TVF is so bad, that even the unimaginative and lackluster second season of Hostel Daze feels nice in front of it. TVF has never been this wrong with the casting of any character, I don't understand how did they let this happen. If Adarsh Gourav did not have the time to shoot this season, then either they should have written off his character, or replaced him with someone like Gagan Arora (College Romance) or Shivam Kakar (FLAMES). How does Utsav Sarkar fit into this space? He does not have the charm or the acting potential that Adarsh Gourav had, so how did the casting team found him to be a suitable replacement? Thankfully he was turned into a supporting character this season, otherwise it would have been a total disaster.
2. Was Luv Vispute, who portrays Chirag, paid by TVF or was he the one financing this season? How did he become the central character all of a sudden? Barring the fifth episode, every single episode was centred on Chirag, and on top of that he got a girlfriend by the end of the season! Although, Luv did very well, it created an imbalance in the show. The expansion of Chirag's role was done at the expense of other character's screen time, which in my opinion wasn't a good move. Although, Jaat played by Shubham Gaur has always been a supporting character, but in this season his role was even further reduced in order to give more space to Chirag.
3. The final episode of the season was quite weak in my honest opinion. As per tradition of TVF, this was written with the intention of making the viewers emotional, but it felt nothing more than a listless effort and made no impact on me. Nostalgia should be used as the icing on the cake, not as the cake itself. Also, Jasmeet Singh was a fourth year student in the first season of Hostel Daze, so unless he failed continuously for three years, it makes no sense for him to be still in fourth year. Perhaps the creative team thought, if we can change the main lead of the show, then this minor continuity error holds no significance at all.
4. The absence of Saurabh Khanna and Abhishek Yadav's eloquent writing skills was truly felt in this season. People often praise TVF shows for being very well written, and Saurabh Khanna along with Abhishek Yadav have been responsible for writing the first season of Kota Factory, Hostel Daze, Immature and Yeh Meri Family; four web shows that received immense love from the viewers; but now they are not a part of 'The Viral Fever' (TVF) team and the new writers haven't been successful in matching up to the standards set by their predecessors.
5. There was no Adarsh Gourav in this season. Adarsh Gourav's charismatic screen presence and nuanced portrayal of Ankit Pandey made that role a memorable one, but unfortunately he was nowhere to be found in this season.
6. Once again the girls didn't have much to do in any episode as such. More often than not Ahsaas Channa and Ayushi Gupta were just filling in the blanks, their characters weren't developed much and they had no perspective of their own.
7. One of the most notable things in the first season of Hostel Daze was its music composed by Vaibhav Bundhoo, but unfortunately there was none of it this season.
This season definitely had it's moments, but in it's entirety it was just above average, which is not something I would want TVF shows to be. It seems TVF has forgotten the 'experiment' part of it's tagline, no wonder they refuse to step out of their comfort zone and continue making shows that are not very different from each other. TVF really needs to get out of the nostalgia trip, broaden their horizons and explore new story ideas, because as a storyteller if you don't experiment and walk on some new paths, you are bound to get complacent and trap yourself in the realm of mediocrity, and that is exactly what is happening with 'The Viral Fever' right now.
