While they are best known for their “songifications” of the latest news stories, The Gregory Brothers also have plenty of other creative aspirations, and the latest piece of content they have hosted on YouTube might be the oddest project they’ve worked out to date. They are the co-executive producers of The Adventures of Nunchuck Larry, a strange homage to kung fu movies of the 70s and 80s that is produced by Portal A.
In the Nunchuck Larry pilot, which premiered at VidCon and is available on The Gregory Brothers’ secondary channel, we meet the titular martial artist, who is portrayed by Stevin Espinosa. Larry is out to avenge the death of his friend Serge at the hands of an android, and as he embarks on that journey, he runs into several YouTube stars of note. Shameless Maya portrays his love interest, Flula Borg shows up as a guy who plays lawn darts,...

When NBC dropped Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt from its programming schedule, co-creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock inked a deal with Netflix to release the show and develop new seasons. And for the Kimmy Schmidt theme song, the show’s development team tapped another name in the digital entertainment world: The Gregory Brothers. The Brooklyn-based Gregory Brothers rose to fame because of their viral Auto-Tune/Songify the News web series, starting with the hit video “Bed Intruder Song.” Since then, the group of four musicians (three brothers and one brother’s wife) have worked on a pilot for Comedy Central, performed at the 83rd annual Oscars, and collaborated with Jimmy Fallon on a Super Bowl supercut video. According to Indiewire, Fey told reporters at the Television Critics Association Press Tour in January 2015 she and her team knew for a while they wanted Kimmy Schmidt to have an opening theme similar to the “Songify” format.

Last, Maker Studios delivered one of my favorite videos of the holiday season, a network-wide rendition of 'Deck the Halls' conducted by Mike Tompkins. This year, the top McN has managed to outdo itself with an entire album of Christmas favorites titled A Very Maker Music Christmas. Maker Music is rolling out individual music videos one song at a time as a '12 Days Of Christmas' program. Each video features a different creator, with BaracksDubs kicking things off. Out of the videos that have been released thus far, I'm partial to The Gregory Brothers' soothing cover of 'Away In A Manger', which shows a side of the musical quartet that doesn't involve silly covers of auto-tuned news clips. Andrew Gregory gets bonus points for his blingy guitar capo. Other partners featured in the campaign include Timothy DeLaGhetto, Hiimrawn, and Dodger. The full 12-track album is available at iTunes,...

Most companies outline their corporate policies in dry text documents, but leave it to YouTube to answer some frequently asked questions in the form of a video collaboration. For the second year in a row, the site opened a presentation at Vidcon with a Barely Political video that takes viewers to the YouTube Complaints Desk. The video stars Laura McDonald as the YouTube Receptionist, who must address pressing complaints lodged by The Gregory Brothers, Prank vs. Prank, Hannah Hart, Beth Hoyt, and others. As with last year's version, most of the complaints result in very cheesy riffs on a basic 'what would happen if YouTube behavior occurred in real life' joke. A couple of the complaints do raise valid issues on YouTube, including the fairly negative response to the site's recent layout changes. McDonald-as-YouTube offers that the new channel design allows for views on many different devices. Then there is...

Although they are best known for their auto-tuned versions of viral clips, The Gregory Brothers are also capable original songwriters. The musical quartet has released a song titled 'DJ Play My Song (No, Leave Me Alone)' as part of YouTube Comedy Week, and it combines the group's trademark catchiness with guest appearances from the likes of Psy, DeStorm, and several others. The song, a sly parody of modern pop music, features Sarah Gregory as a woman who just wants to party all night with the music turned way up, with lyrics resembling a typical club hit. However, this plan draws the ire of the DJ, played by Evan Gregory, who just wants to keep the levels reasonable and thinks the woman is getting creepy, especially when she stalks him to the bathroom, his car, and his day job. The video features a ton of guest appearances: Psy appears in...

The Gregory Brothers are flying high of late, with a celebratory ode to Mlk and an upcoming appearance Jimmy Fallon's late-night program catching our eye. A new entry on the musical quartet's Schmoyoho channel continues their hot streak, as it may be the catchiest auto-tune yet. The subject of the song is Katie Couric's recent interview with football player Manti Te'o regarding the fake girlfriend hoax perpetrated against the Notre Dame star. Titled 'Why, Why, Manti?', the song features a likable hook that, in a pleasant surprise, actually rhymes (unlike many other Gregory Brothers hits). When Te'o's dad starts rapping, I want to laugh, but all I can do is admire his silky smooth flow

The Gregory Brothers can add something else to their resume in addition to Mlk Jr. mix artist extraordinaire, a couple of Streamy Awards, a spot on the Billboard Top 100 Charts, performing at the 83rd Annual Oscars, and partnering with Maker Studios. Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The Bruce Springsteen collaborator and slow jamming host of NBC’s later night talk show is tapping the Brooklyn-based auto-tuning quartet of Auto-Tune the News fame to put together a Super Bowl supercut incorporating fans of Late Night. Fallon took to YouTube to make the announcement and solicit viewers in possession of sports paraphernalia to record a three to five second video of themselves shouting “Wooo!” into the camera and say a sweet nothing or two about football while wearing their favorite team’s colors (in the form of clothing, jerseys, face paint, and/or body paint). The videos (which interested parties should upload...

The Brooklyn-based band The Gregory Brothers uploaded one of their signature auto-tuned music video tracks to the web around this time of year way back in 2009. It featured Martin Luther King Jr. Andrew Gregory (one of the three titular bros that make up the quartet along with Evan Gregory’s wife Sarah) said at the time it was “probably the greatest performance” of any of the unintentional singers who star in his musical group's online videos. “Michael did a treatment of his ‘I Have A Dream’ speech,” Andrew noted. “It works really well because the words are so lyrical and it’s written almost in a song structure, with refrains that build.” Unfortunately, the video no longer exists on the Gregory Brothers YouTube channel. Emi Publishing owns the rights to King’s famous ‘I Have a Dream Speech,’ and the Gregory Brothers’ version was most likely a victim of the...
