Hadouken! Legendary is ready to throw down after acquiring the film and TV rights to video game developer Capcom‘s world-famous Street Fighter franchise. With Street Fighter 6 hitting consoles and PC platforms on June 2, now is the perfect time to announce an all-out assault of entertainment inspired by the timeless fighting game. As a part of the deal, Legendary will team up with Capcom on future projects, and our bodies are ready!
Street Fighter is one of the most beloved fighting game franchises in history. The first game in the series, Street Fighter, hit arcades in 1987, followed by Street Fighter II in 1991. I was there, man. For both of them! I remember going to Nathan’s Famous restaurants to play the original, and it was a madhouse. People of all ages hooted and hollered around the Street Fighter cabinet as Ryu and Ken duked it out. There was something special...

Legendary is ready to unleash a sonic boom, with the studio acquiring the film and TV rights to the classic beat-’em-up game Street Fighter. The studio will work with video game company Capcom on future projects.
Street Fighter is one of the more enduring fighting video game franchises of all time. It began life with the 1987 arcade game Street Fighter, and hit a high-water mark with Street Fighter II, the 1991 game that spawned countless special editions and remakes. In all, the franchise has sold 49 million units worldwide, with a new installment, Street Fighter 6, due out June 6.
It is known for characters such as Ryu, Ken, Chung-Li, Guile and M. Bison, each of whom have various moves (and sounds — such as “hadouken!”) that make them memorable.
Hollywood has made moves on Street Fighter in the past, with Universal releasing an ill-fated 1994 film that starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Col. Guile...

Deadline has confirmed that Legendary/Warner Bros.’ Dune will be opening day-and-date with the U.S. in China on Oct. 22 while Daniel Craig’s swan song as James Bond, No Time to Die, will open on Oct. 29.
Legendary East is handling the release of Dune in the Prc. Given Legendary’s ownership by Wanda, Dune will be blasted everywhere in the country, and seen in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities as well.
No Time to Die is being distributed by Universal overseas. Both are vital markets in boosting both event pics’ global grosses; China being an important market for 007, one which Eon/Universal/MGM intentionally waited to rebound in the throes of the pandemic.
Both features are confirmed by Maoyan as upcoming releases. Dune and No Time to Die are the only two Hollywood movies which we knew had recently been granted certificates and we were waiting on release dates.

Exclusive: Universal Pictures has landed the right to finance and distribute the next film that Christopher Nolan will direct, based on his script about J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atom bomb.
A theoretical physicist who became the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory, Oppenheimer headed the research and development of the bomb that ended WWII, under what was covertly called the Manhattan Project. Nolan will produce the film alongside his wife and longtime producing partner Emma Thomas for their Syncopy Inc. banner.
Sources said that the film is now greenlighted to begin production in the first quarter of 2022. When Deadline broke the story a few days ago about this film being shopped, I’d heard Nolan’s longtime collaborator Cillian Murphy was in the mix for a key role. That still might happen, but I’m persuaded there are no definitive casting attachments at this point.

If you’re not paying attention to the turmoil in Hollywood over Warner Bros.’ decision to put all its 2021 films on HBO Max and in theaters at the same time, you might have missed a veiled swipe that Timothee Chalamet made at the end of “Saturday Night Live” this weekend.
During the customary end-of-show farewell, Chalamet implored viewers to “treat others with kindness,” giving credit to fellow recent “SNL” host Harry Styles for saying it first. But some on Twitter pointed out that the actor was wearing a hoodie featuring the logo of Legendary, the studio that produced two major blockbusters that Warner is including in the HBO Max move: “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “Dune,” the latter of which stars Chalamet as galactic hero Paul Atreides. Both films were set to release in 2020 but were moved to next year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A week after Warner Bros.’ bombshell announcement that it will debut its 2021 film slate on HBO Max and theaters on the same day, the backlash from filmmakers, producers, agents and guilds is rising to a deafening din. And the theater owners aren’t too happy either. Filmmakers Judd Apatow, Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve — the latter two among the studio’s biggest creators of the last few years — all spoke out publicly this week against Warner Bros.’ decision, with Apatow calling it “disrespectful” and Villeneuve calling it a “hijacking.” Major producers who work with the studio seemed shocked into silence, though Legendary let it be known that it was exploring a lawsuit over the aborted releases of upcoming “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “Dune,” two Warner films that it financed. Meanwhile, the Directors Guild of America and CAA and WME — often on opposing sides of business issues — both sent scathing letters to...

“Dune” director Denis Villeneuve says AT&T “hijacked” Warner Bros. and has shown “absolutely no love for cinema, nor for the audience” in its industry-shaking move to put its 2021 slate on HBO Max day-and-date with theaters.
Villeneuve, in an op-ed written for Variety, said he only learned about the fate of his film by reading the news, and that he had agreed to push “Dune” back almost a year, from winter 2020 to October 2021. He says a movie of this scope can’t hope to be financially viable and will succumb to piracy.

As the dust settled from Warner Bros.’ bombshell announcement last week that its movies would debut in theaters and HBO Max simultaneously next year, Hollywood’s creative community began doing the new calculus for the movie business and found itself coming up short. The backend deals and box office profit participation that in the past two decades have yielded millions of dollars for actors, directors and producers of blockbuster hits are likely to go away under a streaming model which favors one-time, up-front payments. As a consequence, the studio is risking the close relationships with star talent it has built up over decades — including filmmakers like Todd Phillips (“Joker”), Chris Nolan (“Tenet”), Bradley Cooper (“A Star Is Born”), Alfonso Cuarón, Clint Eastwood and Steven Soderbergh, to name just some of the A-list directors. A second issue is what this portends for the most prominent producers who have deals with the studio,...

2020 has been a tough year for blockbusters. Basically, almost any big budget film has moved to next year or opted to debut on a streamer. Even some of the potential 2021 titles are starting to think about this, with Covid-19 still an issue and theaters likely to stay partially closed for some time to come. Now, we can add another big movie to this list, with the crossover sequel Godzilla vs. Kong highly likely to be the next title skipping theaters. In fact, there could be a competition for its rights going on right now. Read on for more on this rumored development… According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. is considering an offer from Netflix in excess of $200 million to take the rights to Godzilla vs. Kong. However, considering that WB does also have HBO Max as its streaming arm, that does appear like the streamer that will ultimately end up with it.

Official plot details for Godzilla vs. Kong have been tough to come by unless you’ve been keeping your eye on all the tie-in merchandise, which is where most of the spoilers seem to be stemming from. But we’ve still got a ways to go before the pic arrives, so there’s lots of time for Warner Bros. to spill the beans and tease what they have planned for the latest installment in the MonsterVerse, which arrives on its fifth and likely final release date next May.
There’s a lot riding on the movie, too, after extensive reshoots were ordered following a test screening that drew mixed reactions from audiences. Thankfully, more recent showings indicate that Godzilla vs. Kong has been improved quite a bit by the additional shooting and at the moment, it’s safe to say that it’s one of 2021’s most-anticipated releases, one which...

In the months since HBO Max launched, a majority of the attention given to the platform has centered on what’s available. That has often meant sifting through the vast HBO Max library, mainly the relative strength of its haul of animation, classic film, and comics-centered offerings.
Amidst all of the questions about what films might make the jump from theatrical to streaming, the HBO Max Originals brand has included a handful of TV series as well. Those shows getting the full bus stop ad/billboard push have been a mixed bag at best, ranging from wildly ambitious heady sci-fi gambits to aggressively safe star-driven romantic dramedies.
But much like its competitors’, HBO Max’s definition of what constitutes an “Original” is flexible, combining those aforementioned streaming tentpoles with a collection of overseas imports and co-productions. They may not have broken through to the general pop culture consciousness (or made...

Ever since Disney purchased Fox and acquired the rights to all of their most valuable properties, a lot of people have been curious to see how the Mouse House would handle Deadpool 3. And understandably so.
After all, handling someone like the Merc with a Mouth in relation to the Marvel Cinematic Universe was always going to be a tricky situation. Not only does the McU already have its own set of narrative rules and regulations, but a foul-mouthed and irreverent character who constantly breaks the fourth wall isn’t exactly something that would be easy to incorporate into the franchise.
Nevertheless, Disney is going to try their best to make it all work and Deadline brings word today that the studio has hired two new writers to pen the script. According to the outlet, Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin have been tasked with bringing the Merc into the McU,...

After the success of Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne’s fantasy show “Carnival Row,” Amazon has set its sights on another high-concept series from Legendary Television.
The streamer has issued a series order for “Lightyears,” an hourlong sci-fi-drama produced by Legendary, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.
“Lightyears” hails from Holden Miller and “The Son” writer and “Into the Badlands” producer Daniel C. Connolly (pictured left). Argentinian director Juan José Campanella has been tapped to helm and executive produce the first two episodes.
The series centers around Franklin and Irene York, a couple who years ago discovered a chamber buried in their backyard which inexplicably leads to a strange, deserted planet. Did HBO Max just provide a preview of what we can expect in the upcoming Oscar campaign awards season (if there is one)?
Last night I attended my first virtual world premiere. The current shutdown of production in Hollywood has brought out a philanthropic side on the part of studios, and as announced on Monday that includes a new initiative set up by Warner Bros. Television to help struggling, aspiring actors. As first shared by Deadline, the TV studio wants to connect with acting students who have had their final year of training, along with other year-end activities, halted by the ongoing pandemic.
The Wbtv Casting Initiative has been set up and was announced via a flyer to about 400 undergraduate, graduate, and conservatory programs throughout the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Drama students are encouraged to submit headshots, resumes, and written presentations to Warner Bros., who will review submissions and narrow the pool down to a select group of applicants who will then be invited to audition for Warner Bros. programs, and potentially meet with the studio’s casting executives.
