The awards ceremony of the 14th Taiwan International Documentary Festival (Tidf) took place on May 16. 42 nominated films in the Asian Vision Competition, International Competition, Taiwan Competition and 14 works shortlisted for the Tidf Visionary Award, an award for promoting sinophone documentaries, competed for 11 awards.
The Programme Director Wood Lin says this is his 7th time participating in Tidf's programming since 2010, and a persistent self-pursuit for incarnating the spirit of documentary through curating has made each version more challenging than imagined. He also thanks all the filmmakers at the ceremony for devoting their lives to and fully engaging in filmmaking; their works are wonderful gifts that introduce the complexity and beauty of the world to the audience in Taiwan. He then quoted this year's Outstanding Contribution Award recipient, Chang Chao-tang: “We exist, because people who remember us”, saying that Tidf also exists because all who participate, remembers it.

1. Midwives (2022) by Hnin Ei Hlaing
The core of the film is truthfully, a study of the complex relationship between Nyo Nyo and Hla, who in turn, represent both sides at the front of the racial conflict. At first glance, the bond between the two women seems to be unshakable. But after spending an hour with them, you start to observe the inklings of verbal abuse slipping in. At one point, Hla even compares Nyo Nyo's people to cows; this is the confounding enigma that makes “Midwives” so compelling and reason enough for Hnin to film the documentary. (Leon Overee)
2. What Should We Have Done? (2023) by Tomoaki Fujino
Tomoaki Fujino's deeply personal documentary, “What Should We Have Done?” serves as a poignant testament to the devastating impact of mental illness on families, and the profound consequences of denial and societal stigma. Through his unflinching lens, he lays bare the complex emotions,...

Married at First Sight Season 13 kept us glued to our TV screens each week as we watched the drama play out between the couples.
None more so than Zach Freeman and Michaela Clark, dubbed Hurricane K.
It didn’t take long for us, and Zach, to realize why his wife got that moniker, and each week, she got bashed by viewers for her dramatic outbursts.
Zach was no angel, either. His poor communication skills and refusal to be upfront and honest with his wife caused mixed signals and worsened matters.
The experts tried to get the couple back on track several times throughout the season to no avail.
When Decision Day arrived, we were all happy to see the toxic couple part ways once and for all.
It’s been a few years since the pair called it quits, so where are Zach and Michaela today?

Tko Group Holdings, the parent company of UFC, disclosed that it will pay $335 million to settle two class-action lawsuits filed by former UFC fighters alleging the Mma promoter violated antitrust laws.
Zuffa, the predecessor entity that owned and operated UFC, was the defendant in five related class-action lawsuits filed between December 2014 and March 2015, which were consolidated into a single action in June 2015 (Le et al. v. Zuffa). An additional lawsuit, Johnson et al. v. Zuffa, was filed in 2021.
On March 13, 2024, Tko reached an agreement to settle all claims asserted in both class action lawsuits for a total of $335 million payable in installments over a period of time, the company disclosed in an SEC filing Wednesday. “The terms will be memorialized in a long-form agreement and then submitted to the court for approval,” Tko said, adding that it anticipates the settlement amount will be deductible for tax purposes.

Cristina Vee, a prominent American voice actress known for her roles in anime series like Konosuba and Hunter x Hunter, has permanently deleted her Twitter account following online harassment. The incident stemmed from a false accusation labeling her as a “Zionist,” which sparked a wave of online abuse.
The harassment began after Vee was included in a list of purported “Zionist” voice actors, compiled and posted by a user identified as @WhereIsmeCake. This quickly gained traction online, leading to targeted harassment directed at Vee, including hateful messages, escalating to death threats and online harassment campaigns.
Despite the user retracting Vee’s name from the list and issuing an apology acknowledging the mistake, the damage had already been done.
Vee, overwhelmed by the negativity and emotional toll of the harassment, made the decision to permanently delete her Twitter account. In a series of tweets before deactivating her account, she expressing gratitude...

Is the best part about watching reality TV the derailment of somebody’s character because they weren’t actually the G.O.A.T they assumed they were? Maybe. It is quite unfortunate that one of the most entertaining members of the cast got left behind in season 3 of Single’s Inferno, but at least we know she had fun! For the rest, though, we saw it coming for sure. Although I will admit, it would’ve been nice to see Gwan-Hee stay back in the fiery pit, but alas, this is a show for the masses, and I may not be a parttaker. Single’s Inferno season 3 had four successful couples, which left four singles behind in the Inferno. The couples were mostly anticipated by viewers, except when it came to Gwan-Hee, where there was a little bit of confusion. As someone who is watching this show for the first time,...

Matthew Perry died from the acute effects of the anesthetic ketamine, according to an autopsy released Friday by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office.
The results of the autopsy listed drowning, coronary artery disease and buprenorphine (used to treat opioid addiction) effects as contributing factors. The manner of death was ruled an accident. There were no signs of foul play.
“At the high levels of ketamine found in his postmortem blood specimens, the main lethal effects would be from both cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression,” the report, obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, states.
The report says that none of the following substances were detected: alcohol, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, Pcp and fentanyl.
The report describes Perry as being on ketamine infusion therapy with the most recent therapy reportedly one-and-a-half weeks before his death.

Voices That Bring Anime to Life: Celebrating the Best Anime Voice Actors of All Time ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Japan takes its anime voice actors very seriously to the point where they have special voice acting academies and schools to train them to master their art completely. This is exactly why these professionals are so versatile and have such natural, golden voices. In fact, a large number of avid anime fans prefer watching anime subs rather than anime dubs exactly because of this. Some Dub actors tend to exaggerate and overact as a way to compensate for the inconsistency in translations and syncing. Native voice actors retain the ‘authenticity’ that dubs lack.
The authenticity of the subs is attributed to the voice actors’ talent and how natural they are with their jobs. Here are some of the best Japanese anime voice actors of all time.

Is it real? Or is it all just drama? This is a question that applies to most reality TV, but Netflix’s latest Japanese reality show Love Like a K-drama begs the question: can feelings blossom from a kiss on screen? Eight contestants compete to win hearts and places in mini K-drama episodes—an emotional journey with a devastating ending? We’re not so sure yet; however, it’s the contestants that make the show quite intriguing—the heart of reality. In the first four episodes of Love Like a K-drama, we got to meet the eight contestants, four Japanese women and four Korean men, while they tried to get to know each other. While at first it was all sweet like mochi, as the show progressed, things got dramatic quickly. There’s a lot to unpack in the next four episodes, coming out on the 5th of December, so before then,...

In a previous piece for Gold Derby, I referenced how all but one Best Picture Oscar winner since 2008 came from filmmakers who had never directed a Best Picture nominee before. The only exception is Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s “Birdman” in 2014; his prior Best Picture bid was for “Babel” back in 2006. Let’s dig into the last 15 years of winners, shall we?
SEEOscars alert: Watch out for ‘Barbie’ scene-stealers America Ferrera and Rhea Perlman
In 2008 “Slumdog Millionaire” was the juggernaut of the film awards season, winning eight Oscars, which is still more than any film since then. It was directed by Danny Boyle, who at the time only made one other Oscar nominated film, 1996’s “Trainspotting,” which was recognized with a nom for Best Adapted Screenplay.
In 2009 the race famously came down to two films from directors who were previously married: James Cameron‘s “Avatar” and Kathryn Bigelow‘s “The Hurt Locker.

Entertainment workers have moved to take more than $44 million out of their individual retirement accounts as they endure months without work due to the strikes.
Nearly 3,000 workers have filed for hardship withdrawals, according to an update circulated on Friday by the Motion Picture Industry Pension and Health Plans. The average withdrawal is about $15,000.
The figures, which were confirmed by two labor sources, show the scale of the economic hardship facing Hollywood’s below-the-line workforce, which includes set painters, grips, craft service workers, drivers, cinematographers, costumers, hair and makeup artists, and many others.
The Writers Guild of America strike began on May 2, shutting down most scripted TV and film productions. But work had already been slow for several months before that. Many workers have said they have not worked since January or even last fall, causing them to use up their emergency savings.

Over a year since their group was voluntarily recognized, the unionized staffers at the International Documentary Association have ratified their first two-year contract.
The members of the Communications Workers of America Local 9003-affiliated union unanimously voted to greenlight the contract on Friday. The contract will increase IDA’s 401(k) matching program from 4 percent to 5 percent, will boost work-from-home stipends by 60 percent and will institute reproductive health and pandemic leave policies and gender-affirming language, according to an announcement from IDA interim executive director Ken Ikeda. The contract codifies minimum wages for each tier of employee, with full-time, permanent staffers earning a minimum of $30.25 per hour.

Late Saturday afternoon at San Diego Comic-Con, thousands of fans, packed inside a cavernous ballroom, roared to life as the cast for one of the biggest shows to appear at this year’s annual fan convention stepped onto the stage. It was, in fact, one of the only times a cast of actors appeared at Sdcc this year. And it wasn’t for a superhero movie or TV show or any massive franchise backed by a major studio.
Instead, it was for “Critical Role,” the popular, long-running webseries that started as a group of voice actors getting together to play Dungeons & Dragons.
“A question for the audience: anyone who’s doing cosplay, will you please stand up so we can see it?” asked star Liam O’Brien from the stage. Half the crowd — many of whom were dressed as characters from the show — leapt to their feet.
“You look beautiful San Diego!

The lineup for the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con has been unveiled, giving attendees – and those refreshing their browsers the entire weekend – a little less to look forward to but still plenty of panels, reveals and anniversary spotlights. And with deadlines on the potential Screen Actors Guild strike quickly approaching, could only harm the event even more.
Here are some of the highlights of the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con:
Thursday, July 20th:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem – “Paramount Pictures brings a panel discussion and footage presentation with filmmakers.”
Project K – “From the heartland of India emerges a unique tale that intertwines ancient mythology with cutting-edge science fiction, all within the captivating Spice Punk aesthetic. Welcome to Project K,...

The K-Pop world is currently going through one of its biggest ever corporate dramas, with Sm Entertainment, the label of BoA, Girls Generation, Exo and Super Junior, fighting off what its management is describing as a hostile takeover from its rival Hybe, home of BTS.
In the latest development, Sm Entertainment said today that it was cancelling a share issue to Korean tech giant Kakao Corp and its Kakao Entertainment subsidiary, which was a move that appeared to be an attempt to limit Hybe’s influence.
A court in Seoul said on Friday (March 3) that it was upholding an injunction sought by Sm Entertainment’s former chief producer, Lee Soo Man, against the proposal that would have given the Kakao companies a 9.05% shareholding in Sm Entertainment, along with an exclusive distribution contract. If the deal had gone through, it would have made Kakao the second largest shareholder in Sm Entertainment behind Hybe.

“It’s about love,” says “90 Day Fiancé” executive producer, Matt Sharp, when asked what makes the TLC reality TV series so popular. “Love is primal, but I think we tapped into a couple of things. One is that, this show is incredibly authentic. I’m a huge lover of ‘The Bachelor’ and that franchise, however, we were one of the first shows to actually tell real stories about ordinary Americans and their love journeys. Also, this show is about this journey with other cultures. When we launched this show in 2014 we were on the ‘love frontier’ of this whole new era of finding people all over the world.” Watch the exclusive video interview with Sharp above.

With the box office’s rebound just as 5K attendees are reconvening at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, exhibition and studios can rest easy knowing that there’s a return to a theatrical window. For most studios with tentpole fare, that’s 45 days, and for those titles with less commercial appeal or aimed at specialty audiences, it’s 17 days.
With a summer box office that’s loaded with such window-respecting movies as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Top Gun: Maverick, Thor: Love & Thunder, Jurassic World: Dominion, Lightyear, Elvis, Nope, Bullet Train, and more, it’s pretty safe to say that most of the majors have gotten their jonesing for day-and-date out of their system. They’ve largely learned that collapsed windows siphon ticket sales, spur greater piracy and infuriates talent. Studio executives are re-awakening to the power of windows, and if there’s any indication to which way the wind is blowing,...

If not for the unfortunate fact of HBO’s longtime pay-cable rival having the same name, Winning Time would have come into this world known as Showtime. That’s the title of the Jeff Pearlman book from which the series is adapted, derived from the nickname that was bestowed upon this entire Lakers era of Magic and Kareem, the Jerrys Buss and West, Pat Riley,...
