Brilliant

I've been binge watching all the episodes of Fringe for the first time over the past few weeks. I was a big fan of the X Files and decided to give Fringe a go based on recommendations.

I have not been disappointed and this particular episode - about a pocket universe - is in my opinion one of the best episodes of Fringe, right up there with "White Tulip".

Credit to all involved in this episode, the imagination that has gone into making this is to a very high standard.

The Pocket Universe
claudio_carvalho8 April 2017
While Peter and Olivia grieve the loss of Etta, Walter retrieves the tape #7 and heads alone to an apartment building in a derelict zone to bring an essential component of the plan to defeat The Observers. The apartment is the opening to a "pocket universe' where the laws of time and physics do not work. Walter finds a man called Cecil that accidentally felt in this universe twenty years ago but only five days have passed in the pocket universe. Meanwhile Astrid finds the tape and goes with Peter and Olivia to the apartment. Peter and Olivia use the entrance to the pocket universe to seek out Walter while Astrid wait for them. But The Observers have identified Walter on the street and are heading to the area. What will happen next?

"Through the Looking Glass and What Walter Found There" is an episode that recalls "Twilight Zone", with Walter, Peter and Olivia going to a place where the laws of physics and time do not work. The plot is intriguing and well-resolved, and the question now is how Peter will be affected by the device he implanted in his neck. My vote is nine.

"Repent, Harlequin" - Said the Tic-Toc Man

Warning: Spoilers
Fringe Division is back on the Long and Winding Yellow Brick Road - And the ongoing "Scavenger Hunt"

After the hurt of Etta's loss, Peter has snapped. He was warned, to dig "two graves" before going on any mission of revenge. Indeed, he is now operating in unknown territory.

Walter however is more like the Walter we knew before Simon's operation on Walter. Slightly addled, he digs out the next tape - And goes it alone to find what he needs to find.

But what is left of Fringe Division should not venture out into the open so visibly, and he is seen going into a wrecked building by the magic Observer Eye that leads into Windmark's Office.

This episode once again mentions the mysterious " Donald" who had gone to The Recordist's Camp in S5E3. Apparently he and Walter had hidden something in the building.

On an upper floor of the building is in fact a "pocket universe" Walter had set up - An area where time moves more slowly than on the outside. Perfect for hiding things meant to be picked up when "The Plan to Defeat The Observers" was to go into effect. When Walter goes in, he meets a man who had been in there for 20 years regular time, but only a few days objective time. The man does not know that 20 years have passed on the outside. And of course, Walter has no clue of what he is looking for.

Peter, Olivia and Astrid follow Walter, and bring the video camera with the tape in it. The tape had gone blank at a specific point, where Walter enters the Pocket. Peter seems to find the entry to The Pocket almost immediately- And the portion of tape which was blank is now blank no longer - And there are further instructions.

When Peter and Olivia regroup with Walter, they find what was hidden there. This episode connects to S1E15 "Inner Child" - So we get a possible explanation of events in that first season episode.

But what they were looking for is no longer there - Instead, Olivia finds an old transistor radio that has been locked to a specific frequency.

But before they can leave with their prize, The Observers come and they have to fight it out, once again they need to use the "Bell Fast Pistol" - Which does not work in the pocket, but does when leaving the pocket - Especially if fired first while IN the pocket. Olivia finds this handy.

As they leave, Peter sends the rest ahead to the bus, and stays behind to fight off the remaining observers- With his new-found abilities.

The question left at the end of "An Origin Story" is how will the Observer tech affect Peter? At least in this episode, those effects are not overtly pronounced. But Peter is once again hiding something, and Olivia knows it.

But we have this name: Donald. Who is he, where is he, the Recordist has said that he was taken away by Observers. Plenty of Questions arise. We even "see" Donald, for an instant, but not his face.

As Peter exists in this universe, which we assume is still the "Orange Fringe 'Verse" - So also does something else from the original "Blue" 'verse find it's way into this story and this fabric of reality.

Peter gets back to the Bus "on time" and we know how. He is still able to comfort Walter and act as Anchor - But for how much longer?

Fringe is finally great !
nicofreezer23 June 2021
After 4 Seasons of solid TV(sometime very good sometime boring ) we finally have Season 5 ! And Season 5 is nothing like the first four, this is great TV, every episodes follow the main story in a post apocalyptique World.

I wish Fringe would have been Always like this, Always that good, it would have been one of the best ever. Instead its just a solid show but far from the top 10.

But I will Always remember Season 5, quality finally Rise up.

A Price to Pay
Hitchcoc18 November 2023
As Walter takes everyone on a trip through a maniac maze, we are led into more realizations about how things came to be. It includes the boy who was found underground in a far back episode, the pale, brilliant little boy. What is happening is that the characters are being reinvented. Walter is dropping into another valley of depression. He is forced to sacrifice a confused, starving man in order to save himself. Of course, Peter has entered a whole different realm. When he faces off against one of Observers, he anticipates his every move and beats him to a pulp. He also now has the ability to jump from one place to another. The others have no idea he has that device in his neck. But something really weird happens on the monorail at the end.

I literally fell asleep
VinceGambini6 September 2019
I'm done with Fringe. The writers have turned my once favorite scifi show into a cartoon. Episode 6 is a new low. The characters are unrecognizable and bland and the plot absurd. Can't make sense of anything anymore? No problem. Let's introduce the "pocket universe". Good grief. They should have stopped after season 4. Fell asleep over all this nonsense.
