- Sophie McClaren (Parrish) is a genealogist who's an expert at digging up the past and bringing families together. When her close friend Jonathan (Morgan David Jones, "Murdoch Mysteries") urgently needs to find a bone marrow donor, it brings his twin brother (and Sophie's old flame) Jackson (Matter) back into her life. With Jackson's help, Sophie must use her skills to track down the brothers' long-lost birth father - a man they never even knew existed - in time to save Jonathan's life. Ultimately, growing closer to Jackson on this search gives Sophie the push to finally explore the mystery of her own adoption.
- Sophie McClaren is a Buffalo-based forensic genealogist, whose interest in the subject may have something to do with being adopted herself, although she, in loving her adoptive parents, Harry and Olive McClaren, has never tried to locate her own biological family. She is hired by Dorothy Ford, the mother of her BFFs, twins Jonathan and Jackson Ford, to locate her first husband, Clark Higgins, the twins' biological father. The reason: Jonathan, an architect, has been diagnosed with leukemia and on the possibility that neither she or Jackson, a Manhattan physician, are compatible bone marrow donors, she wants that extra insurance that Clark and his relations, with who she has not kept in touch, may provide to save Jonathan. The problem is is that Dorothy is considered widowed by Clark as he was officially declared deceased in that the car he was driving went over a bridge into the water, although his body was never recovered. Dorothy has some circumstantial evidence, including a possible sighting not too long ago in Boston, that he is still alive, which also brings up the painful possible issue that if he faked his death, he purposefully abandoned the family when the twins were just infants. While both Jonathan and Jackson are angry at their mother for never divulging this information to them, Jackson, home on a visit, joins Sophie in that search for his father. Working together brings up mixed emotions for Sophie as she felt abandoned by Jackson when he moved to Manhattan at a time when she was grieving Olive's passing, but at the same time there have always been unspoken romantic feelings between the two, neither aware of the other's. Beyond that added wrinkle, they may face the challenges of Clark and/or others not wanting him found if he is indeed still alive.—Huggo
