While Leo is in a hospital talking to a government minister, Lord James Embleton, a man enters with a shot gun and goes to the ward where his son is being kept alive artificially; he turns off the machine and waits for him to die. He also demands to see Leo so that he can ask him to investigate his son's cancer. Leo says that he will; not expecting to find anything. At the same time a body is found in a building that Lord Embleton was planning to develop. Post mortems show that both the dead man and the boy died of the same very rare condition. Inevitably it turns out the two cases are linked; something has contaminated an area of land. The closer Leo gets to discovering the truth the more clear it becomes that somebody will do whatever it takes to make sure the past stays buried. While the deaths are being investigated Nikki grows closer to Lord Embleton; it is unclear just how much he knows but it appears that his sinister assistant is involved in keeping everything secret.
This was possibly the best episode of the season so far; there is a good murder mystery; a fifty year old conspiracy and a real sense of danger. When we learn what the real secret is it is necessary to suspend disbelief a bit as it is unlikely such a secret could remain for so long and if somebody had covered up such an accident they would have sealed the site in concrete rather than putting up a few 'no trespassing' signs; still a good drama often requires some suspension of disbelief! The cast did a good job; I especially liked Cal Macaninch performance as the softly spoken but very sinister David Loader.
