When cinema makes you feel this much, of course, then, it’s a good thing…
On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I come of age (again) at the movies; we cut open our chests—”mother!” style—to reveal our still-beating, but wounded hearts as we praise the masterful new film “Call Me By You Name.” Don’t worry too much, though, we’ll be alright in the end, stronger for the experience of falling in and out of love, just like the lead characters in director Luca Guadagnino‘s (“A Bigger Splash,” “I Am Love“) latest, and in our opinion, best, film to date.

When style becomes the substance…
On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I bring back a couple of golden oldies from the show’s past. We took this week off from recording to enjoy a long, gluttonous holiday weekend. But that doesn’t mean we’d leave you without something to listen to. And so, from the Ayt vaults (which you can find here, if you’d like to explore our old episodes), I’ve put together a crime movie double feature: Mathieu Kassovitz‘ scorching, energetic masterpiece from 1995, “La Haine” and Hype Williams‘ “Belly,” from 1998, a misunderstood movie with insanely beautiful visuals that distills the urban crime thriller into a hallucinogenic orgy of experiential moments and sequences.

Sometimes a filmmaker just misses the forest for the trees…

On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I discuss two fantastic new releases in “The Square” and “Lady Bird,” joining them together in a comedic package, even though the films are nothing alike otherwise. Indeed, it’s too broad a description to label either of these films — the latter a remarkable coming of age period piece by writer/director Greta Gerwig and the former a Palme d’Or-winning arthouse comedy epic from Ruben Ostlund (“Force Majeure“) — but examining them together leads to fruitful chatter.

On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I discuss the coming-of-age indie thriller “Super Dark Times” for our main review. The film, though set in the mid-nineties, may very well have the most apt title for our insane/bewildering real-life present. Our original review from Rotterdam found it to be something of a solid calling card for debut feature filmmaker Kevin Phillips, if not a wholly successful effort.

On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I dig into the career thus far of Darren Aronofsky, the filmmaker behind last weekend’s “mother!“, a fascinating film that’s swiftly divided audiences and critics even after a less-than-stellar box office haul. It’s undeniably mind-boggling to consider a studio exec reading the script and greenlighting the film, but that’s what happened and now we’ve got the glory or pain (depending on your feelings of the finished result) of “mother!” to relish in and discuss.

On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I discuss the massive success of “It,” but also find plenty to gripe about the movie. After the film’s record-breaking haul at the box office this past weekend, fans (and most critics) will no doubt be pleased for the inevitable Part 2 promised at the end credits. Even though audiences and most critics seem to be taken with this latest adaptation of Stephen King‘s seminal book (our review was quite positive), we do think the movie has plenty of issues, chief among them the monotonous rhythms of the plot, rushed characterizations and direction/script that’s tonally uneven.

From there, it’s onto our larger topic, writer/director Trey Edward Shults‘ sophomore film (after Ayt favorite “Krisha” from last year) “It Comes At Night,” which despite its misleading marketing (it’s not a monster movie, more a European-flavored horror/survivalist art picture) is a strong effort nonetheless.

Adjust Your Tracking is back to talk about director Jeremy Saulnier's latest film, "Green Room," an intensely entertaining and violent horror action film — his followup to "Blue Ruin" — about a punk band stuck in a life or death fight against a group of neo-nazis after a show goes wrong. My co-host Joe von Appen and I are big fans of Saulnier's particular brand of genre filmmaking, which often finds regular, frightened and even bumbling people put into extreme situations. He's definitely a filmmaker on the rise and will no doubt move onto something bigger and hopefully even better soon (check out my Playlist Podcast interview with him and "Green Room" co-star Anton Yelchin for even more on this). Read More: Cannes Review: Jeremy Saulnier's 'Green Room' Beyond praising that film, though, we also look at it in conjunction with another recent genre release, "Hardcore Henry," an over-the-top.

On the previous episode of Adjust Your Tracking, myself and co-host Joe von Appen gushed about Jeff Nichols' "Midnight Special," and we open this latest episode of the podcast with a followup on its scary box office possibilities (or lack thereof). But the main section of the show is dedicated to Richard Linklater's latest film, "Everybody Wants Some!!," and beyond our review, we dive into a deeper discussion about the film's specific, mostly-white male perspective and what that means in an era of #OscarSoWhite movie culture. The final segment of the podcast is our latest edition of Hold Up, in which we discuss Mathieu Kassovitz' brilliant 1995 film "La Haine," which is possibly even more relevant today than during its initial release. Earlier this week, we dropped the latest Playlist Podcast where I talked with Kevin Jagernauth and Rodrigo Perez about "Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice." And on this latest episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe von Appen and myself can't help but open with our ranty feelings on the movie. It turns out to be good context for the meat of this episode, discussing the power of Jeff Nichols' latest film, "Midnight Special." The film rolled out to more theaters this weekend and will expand from there. Now that it's playing in wider release, we hope you're able to track it down. Listen to the podcast to hear why we love it so. Last week, The Playlist introduced podcast Adjust Your Tracking under its umbrella (listen to their latest episode here). And now we welcome another new podcast, called Over/Under Movies. This show features three critics — Oktay Ege Kozak, Ryan Oliver and Ayt co-host Erik McClanahan — who choose one overrated and one underrated film within the same genre, style, or tone to discuss in each episode. Sometimes the critics agree on the picks, and sometimes they don't, but the conversation is always lively. Make sure to subscribe to The Playlist Podcast iTunes feed as that's where all these shows will live first and foremost. The latest in a growing strand of films that take a fond look at the VHS era, VHS Forever? There has been an explosion in recent years of documentaries taking a look back at VHS, mainly from an American perspective (and often focussing more on the current rarity of said tapes rather than the nostaglia factor) with films like Rewind This! and Adjust Your Tracking. However here in the UK most documentaries related to the VHS era have focussed more on the video nasties (think Jake West & Marc Morris’ two popular docs). However VHS Forever? As former video store mogul Sam Sherman remarks in the documentary Adjust Your Tracking, "People will collection anything," and there is tremendous nostalgia associated with VHS tape and video culture it defined from the first "Select-a-Vision" commercial tape releases in 1977 to A History of Violence, the last movie released on VHS by the studios. It's no exaggeration to say that the videocassette changed our relationship with movies.>> - Sean Axmaker...

I wistfully recall the days when there were video stores all over St. Louis, shops carrying all manner of sleazy eurohorror, kung fu flicks, anime, and softcore sex romps, but those establishments are all long-shuttered. All the St. Louis-area Mom and Pop video stores seemd to have folded around the same time – the late ‘90s. They sold off their stock to collectors like myself who turned around and sold them on ebay for a decent profit. DVDs came along and then Blu-ray and it looked like VHS taped were both gone and forgotten. Then a funny thing happened. Like vinyl to music collectors, movie buffs began to wax nostalgic for those old VHS tapes, especially the ones in the jumbo, oversized boxes or the clamshell-style cartons with lurid artwork, much of it created especially for that video’s release. Outfits like Unicorn and Super Video, and Wizard Video, Camp Video,...
