Sad little movie-the only true horror was the writing!
nospam-25-37497710 October 2014
Based on the previous glowing reviews, you'd think this little indie film was an undiscovered gem. Or maybe, after you saw it, you'd suspect the reviewers were somehow affiliated with the film...or being charitable, just saw a different movie.

In any case, this movie is just plain bad. The dialog is inane, the characters are generally unsympathetic and their behavior is irritatingly stupid when the "action" begins. The so-called "action" was followed by 10 or so minutes straight of high-pitched caterwauling and lack of realistic responses by the characters/victims. The villains were lifeless cardboard cutouts. I hoped and couldn't wait for the lot of them to be killed off and this turkey to be over.

I appreciate those risk-takers who make indie movies. However, this one would have been better left at the junior high-school where it was probably written. See something else or don't say I didn't warn you!

Tedious
adeleysim3 February 2019
This is painfully boring, with the action starting well after halfway through the movie. The antagonist was not compelling and the victims were super noisy throughout. The acting was bad and the script was lame. The characters felt like children in grown ups' bodies. It was so tedious to watch.

So much potential......lost
rkcfmw24 March 2024
So much potential........lost in a whirlwind of haphazard plot lines. This could have been a great film. Perhaps it was some folks first time writing and or acting. Left a lot to be desired in my opinion. Storyline was rather confusing and hard to follow, no real "horror" premise, back story was hard to follow and understand until the end. Many things could have been elaborated on and built up. There were some good parts and well placed "jokes", just not enough to save it. I can't even give it a "campy" vibe. Just hastily put together and shoved out into circulation. To each their own though, I'm sure in some circles it was well recieved.

Sheer something, definitely not horror

Warning: Spoilers
I love the fake reviews that can't say one specific thing about the movie. I found that if you mute any scene with all five college-ish girls the movie is watchable. Their dialogue is unbelievably forced, especially when they 'laugh' at each others' jokes. Lines like 'I begged my vibrator to take me back' or 'let's hit the trail like horsesh*t'. The 'actress' character and the wise cracking but completely unfunny lesbian character look like they're in their 40's.

Boring,bad and annoying

Warning: Spoilers
Just an all round bad movie, for the first hour pretty much nothing happens but a way too long conversation concerning poo, that is followed up by 25 minutes of wailing ,whining tied up girls being tortured by a drunken, decrepit old granny who could have been easily overwhelmed by 5 young girls even tied up if they had put some thought into it instead of spending all their time sqealling so loud you couldn't understand the dialogue. All this is then followed up with escape, run, bash crazy granny but run away so crazy granny can get up again and recapture you and a very dull and badly done 15 minute kill spree yada yada yada. Now,I don't mind a predictable movie, hell, most movies are,but this was so predictable right to the very end scene, and so horribly filmed and acted that I actually put it through my shredder so I could never lay eyes on it again.

Phony reviews are the only thing keeping this above 3.0
Sadly, I've learned that all too often, bad movies are propped up in the ratings by fake reviews and sandbagged rankings. This movie is case-in-point. It is definitely not the worst I've seen, but read the first three reviews...trust me...as someone who takes his reviews seriously (and I write many), these are props. Nothing about this movie is remotely as those reviews state. Everything about it is subpar, and in many facets, VERY subpar. I don't mind a little bad acting, I don't mind stories that have been done to death, and I don't even mind when less professional equipment is used, as long as there is a semblance of cohesion and flow, and a decent enough script to pull it all together. The acting in this was, again, not the worst I've seen, but the rest had almost no redeeming value. Bummer, as I enjoy "cabin in the woods flicks."

Feel free to check my other reviews. I RARELY give 1's, as there is almost always something that can be taken from a film. ALMOST always. Just not in this case.

Watch. Yawn. Sleep.
dcarsonhagy14 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Run, Hide, Die is just now making the rounds of On-Demand. Watched this little stinker last evening. It is yet another indie-crap film made for little-to-nothing and released on an unsuspecting audience.

Five 35+ year old "college" female students are off to help one friend celebrate (and move past) a bad incident in her life. So, off they go into the wild blue yonder to find (natch) the proverbial cabin-in-the-middle-of-nowhere for a party. The "acting" in this was just awful, as was the sound, picture quality, editing, and directing. The movie, although listed at only 75 minutes, seems to take FOREVER to get going. You have 20-plus minutes of stupid drunken dialogue (most of which you cannot hear). The killer shows up and then you're treated to 10-plus minutes of wailing during which dialogue was written but, again, you're clueless as to what's being said because you can't make any of it out.

There is not one redeeming quality about this poor excuse for a movie. We have all seen movies that were (literally) so-bad-they- are-good, but this is not one of them. This is just plain BAD. Rated "whatever" for language and violence.

Words cannot even begin to describe just how bad this film was. How on earth did it get a green light? Poor acting, Bad script, terrible dialogue. These women seriously need a career change. Avoid this film at all costs...

It could of been a good movie
eprusulis13 January 2021
Some of the girls were not bad actresses and the story was good but the main villain Gail Harvey was one of the worst actresses I've ever seen she made a terrible villain you could tell that she didn't want to be in this movie and it just doesn't make sense that one drunk woman can overpower five girls and the whole thing of making her making them act out this script that one of the girls had instead of talking about her son's death was just stupid the movie started off as probably like a four or five and went down to like a one or two one Gail Harvey was put into it

Not sure which is worse: the acting, script, or direction. Save yourself the headache and skip this waste of time completely.

Unsettling, Uncomfortable, Unpredictable, Unhinged
davidhershwitzky8 September 2014
This is my first review on IMDb. There are hardly any reviews for this film anywhere on the Internet. I wanted to contribute.

I saw this on hulu plus.

Not knowing get what to expect I figured this would be a standard 80's slasher throwback. I was wrong.

The set up is very familiar. Five girls head off to a cabin in the woods for a fun getaway. However, this day marks the anniversary of the murder of the main girl's ex husband. That's all I'll give away as far as what happens. What I will say is the film takes it's time effectively building up all of the characters. These aren't cardboard, one dimensional characters. They are real people. When the horror does start, the movie becomes extremely uncomfortable and quite unpredictable.

Some points...

The music score really adds to the tension.

You will be surprised by the twists and turns.

The low budget adds a gritty feel. Although it does work against the film at times. The camera is shaky here and there and you might not always catch what's happening. This doesn't happen too much though. The low budget actually worked it It's favor for the most part.

I've seen a lot of horror movies. Rarely do they leave me feeling unsettled. This one did. And for that, I give it due praise.

Bad. Awful. Terrible.
TheZackMorse3 September 2022
Even grading on a generous low-budget indie film curve, this is just inexcusably awful, save for some of the (over) acting. However, most of these characters are so stupid to the point where it strains credulity. The movie takes forever to get moving, and when finally it does, it kind of spins around in circles - as does some of the cinematography (if you can please call it that) for 15-20 minutes & promptly careens into a ditch. So, if you enjoy yelling, "how could you be that dumb?!" repeatedly at a movie - or yourself for watching this - this is for you. Otherwise, please don't waste 90 minutes of your life.

This little gem needs to be seen by die-hard horror fans
jessiemail045 September 2014
This movie is independent and it sometimes shows. Do not let that stop you from excitedly pressing play as soon as you get the chance. This horror film will surprise you. It will give you leads that are smart, funny, and well thought-out. It will give you an intelligent, dialogue-driven script and actors who can handle it. Most importantly, this horror film will do what horror films rarely do in recent years; it will genuinely horrify you by the final credits. I have seen, literally , hundreds and hundreds of horror films (my personal favorite genre) and enjoyed many. This film is enjoyable in parts, especially when establishing the likable and funny characters in the first half. But, make no mistake, it is not a film that leaves you with pleasant feelings. This film left me distressed, unsettled, and unnerved. It did so without insulting my intelligence and it even shocked me a time or two. A throw-back and an innovative horror film at once makes "The Anniversary" most definitely worth a watch.

Sheer horror - my stomach was in knots for hours(!)
sgtsedlak8 August 2013
This film takes you from the depths of sadness and regret to the pinnacle of terror; with the subtlety of a well-oiled door easing shut behind you, you realize you're enmeshed in a world of unimaginable horror. After literally decades of cookie-cutter, predictable genre horror, I was truly shaken for the first time in years. Physically ready to jump up and run for the nearest door, or the bathroom to toss my nerve-wracked cookies.

The twists and reveals are original and unique, a stand- out in a world of horror films that long ago ran out of anything new to offer. All the more relevant to the 90s setting is the bird's-eye view of the inescapable realities of that age, brought to you in screaming, bloody technicolor.

I haven't yet worked up the courage to watch it again; I know what's coming this time.
