A personal mission
bkoganbing20 January 2017
Mob lawyer Chazz Palminteri grew up with Tom Selleck and the two of them have lunch when Palminteri drops a hint that there is a planned hit of a mob boss. This is the beginning of a story line where Selleck eventually there is a leak in his inner circle and later who it is.

Donnie Wahlberg and new partner Megan Ketch investigate the murder of a car dealer in a Chinese massage parlor. Their problem is the lack of cooperation among the Chinese witnesses.

But the main story here involves Len Cariou getting mugged at an ATM in broad daylight. Will Estes makes it a personal mission to catch the perpetrator and it costs him a bit. You can understand his feelings however.

Nicely done especially from Cariou and Estes. And I agree with the other reviewer that Wahlbeg's victim was not a loved man, not even by his ex-wife. Her reaction is priceless.

Yet another great episode - more discipline for reviewers!

Warning: Spoilers
Definitely an up-to-standard episode. From the start our sympathies are with Grandpa Henry and the drive to find his attacker, so the family is involved immediately. I think the crux of the story is the point where Jamie has to decide to let the thief fall or to rescue him. He takes the big leap, both physically and metaphorically, and in that instant his character develops, both for us and within the series.

There are a couple of side-stories. Frank gets a convenient tip about an upcoming mob hit - the effects of this will develop in later episodes - while Danny and new partner Kate go after a murderer to good effect.

I have to disagree with another reviewer. Tom Selleck and Chaz Palminteri did not grow up together. Chaz Palminteri grew up in the Bronx in New York, while Tom Selleck grew up in Detroit and (mostly) Los Angeles. Their characters (Frank Reagan and Angelo Gallo) may have grown up together, and that's what we want to know in the context of the story - that's what helps us to understand how they are placed in this episode of this fictional series. Knowing that Gabriella Palminteri is the daughter of Chaz does not add to our appreciation of her character portrayed in Open Secrets (S4E15) unless it is to relate their two acting styles. My strong feeling is that characters' names should be kept for and used in the context of the script, while actors' names should be kept out of the context of the script and used in the context of professional drama. Was that a good portrayal of the character? Do these two actors have the chemistry to interact between their characters as intended? The context divide between script and reality needs to be maintained clearly, otherwise a reader cannot be sure what is going on in the script they are reading. In writing any review, When we are talking about a script and say that X_script is the son of Y_script we know the meaning. However, if we make the same statement, that X_actor is the son of Y_actor, do we have the same understanding if we are still in the context of the script? If I say that Liza Minnelli is the daughter of Judy Garland, has that any impact other than in any performances they appeared together? Please, please, for what is happening within the script keep character names, actors' names for performances or other activities outwith the script.

Warning: Spoilers
It's almost a different story in this episode when crime hits home. When Grandpa Len Cariou is assaulted at a local ATM, the force springs into action and you can see Jaime's face when the crime is discussed at entrance time. Ethical questions are posed here? In his anger, did Jamie really do the wrong thing and wind up with a 3 day suspension, despite the fact that he caught the thug who did this to his grandfather.

In a sidebar story, wait until you here the response of a victim's ex-wife once she has learned that her husband has been shot to death. It is priceless to say the least.

In still another story, Frank uses inside connections to get a mob family.
