A tale of weightless humans, a sexless monster, and early breast enlargement
Kingkitsch31 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"Kaptara" was a labor of love for someone, but it's not a labor of love to watch. The glowing reviews for this sub-par animated tale of Theseus and the Minotaur must have been written by the director's family and friends, because they're describing something I didn't see at all.

The video game "God of War" had much better animation and that came out years ago. Much of the activity in "Kaptara" seems to have been a strange marriage between that old video game and Ray Harryhausen's 1958 epic "7th Voyage of Sinbad". Despite this shaky pedigree, the storyline has been altered to include Atlantis, which is not in the original myth. Nothing weighs anything on Kaptara. People glide over the surfaces they're supposed to be walking on. Ships float over the water. The Minotaur stamps it's hooves, but they never connect to whatever this sexless beast is standing on. Yes, the Minotaur has no junk, just a small hair curtain that appears and reappears at will. All the ladies have to worry about is getting their arms ripped off. Still, an incredibly weird love story is introduced between the bull-man and the incipient queen Ariadne. She can't drop a rock on this monster's head when she gets the chance because it gave her pomegranates and someone's liver. At one point, the Minotaur knocks off part of one of it's horns, yet the next shot shows both still in place.

Ariadne has very successful Frankenboobs, which each weigh about ten pounds apiece (the only things that seem to have any weight at all in Kaptara); they never move. Ever. Even when running, her teensy bandage top never fails to stay in place. These ancient wonders must be stuffed with cement. The men in this gyros sandwich have all been modeled after Tom of Finland's gay hero Kake, with gigantic pecs and some nicely rendered nipples.

Some steampunk stuff is thrown into the mix with gears and levers and falling hardware as the island starts to sink. Boulders fall slowly, looking like props from a high school play. The destruction of Kaptara looks suspiciously like the sinking of Atlantis from George Pal's 1961 epic "Atlantis, the Lost Continent". Again, nothing weighs anything so all the running and screaming seems a bit useless.

This is a hard watch. It seems to go on way too long, but the steadfast will stick it out just to see if Ariadne has a nip slip. Spoiler: she doesn't. She does have what appears to be a French manicure which is an anachronism, but hey, nothing else makes much sense here either. For insomniacs only.

Visually impressive engaging fantasy
Sfontanetta15 February 2013
Atlantis: The Last Days of Kaptara is a major studio caliber film produced on a boutique budget, with no concession to creative. I had the opportunity to screen this fantasy at its premiere, and wasn't sure what to expect, as fantasy isn't typically my preferred genre. Kaptara immediately drew me in and retained my attention with its compelling, well-paced narrative and layered, complex characters. The visuals were also of impressive quality, and I especially enjoyed the film's score, which enhanced the overall viewer experience. Kaptara is obviously thoughtful, and the care and dedication invested by the production team and talent is apparent. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and look forward to Kaptara's distribution and subsequent films from Mind's Eye Studios.

Thoroughly enjoyable!

Wonderful! An animated film for grown-ups! Don't be fooled in thinking this is for kids because it is animated! No way, this is an action adventure fantasy horror. I loved the computer game style animation. This was super exciting, from the opening to the climatic end. There was literally never a dull moment and the film took a few unexpected turns, as well. I never expected it to be so gory.

The film offers a very likable protagonist and a decent antagonist. Throw in a beast and a handful of people to battle the evil and you have a film filled with suspense, action and drama. Loved it!

Exciting Mythical Adventure
Michelle-groman14 December 2012
As the first movie from Mind's Eye Studios, and low budget, this is excellent. This movie is so much fun to watch. It makes you feel like a kid again only the Minotaur is darker and scarier than anything in The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad. The voices are fantastic. The musical score is beautiful and carries the emotion of the film from the joyous welcoming of the tributes to the dark depths of the labyrinth. The animation is great, though could be better (the female anatomy defies gravity but I think most men will not mind and running scenes could use improvement). The story is well told and keeps you in suspense. The movie has great momentum. It's a fun ride that ends too soon! I want a sequel!!

For a low budget animated film its a great movie to see.

I have seen this movie at least a dozen times and it gets better every time I watch it. You can really tell that the director put a lot of thought into every aspect of the movie. The editor did a great job too I don't feel like I am missing any important points. The story flow and pacing is excellent and the graphics are reminiscent of popular video games. There are a couple of goofs within the animation but it was kind of fun finding them throughout the film. For a low budget movie I was really impressed with the overall quality of the movie. I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Although, I would not recommend this movie for young kids I think teenagers and above would really get a kick out of it. My kids really like the movie, their favorite character is the minotaur. Every movie deserves a chance and overall this one was not a disappointment.

Kaptarawesome!

Wow what a film...an epic, intelligent drama and fantasy/adventure that *demands* a sequel, and a prequel!! The graphics are so detailed (love the eye makeup of the female characters), the voices are beyond excellent, and the music and the sound are so perfect for the story. There is also a touch of humor and levity which only adds to the awesome edge-of-your-seat drama. I also was amazed by the incredibly moving opening sequence and artwork. The horror scenes are delightfully shocking and graphic and they rival those of Japanese Animes. Animated films like this, for an older audience, are the best!! "Atlantis: The Last Days of Kaptara" needs to be released in all theaters!

Cult Classic

I saw this at a promo screening last year and I was surprised at how much fun this movie was.

It's a throw back to those awesome fantasy films like Conan but with a Game Of Thrones reboot feel to it that makes it enjoyable for people like me who aren't die hard fantasy fans.

The story is great and the action is intense. It's worth watching just to see the Minotaur action sequences.

I think there needs to be more independent feature animation movies out there for adults. Most of the animated movies are for kids and it's nice to see one with a more mature story and some epic action scenes.

Definitely worth checking out you're not going to be disappointed.

Loved it

What a great rendition of the story of the Minotaur! (Think the original "Hunger Games"). I was surprised by the complexity of characters and the development of the story line. Several interesting motifs resonate throughout. I found it to be a really well-written film. And the movie is beautiful to look at. Each frame looks like it could be a postcard sent from ancient Greece. The action scenes will keep you on the edge of your seat. The fighting scenes were especially spectacular. (Bloody and gory at times). Just because it's animated does not make it for kids! I'm not usually a sci-fi/horror type but this was also a story of survival and a commentary on human nature. Highly recommended!

Excellent First film
ppdeciutiis25 April 2013
I loved watching this action packed film. It was reminiscent of films I grew up with as a child. The story line was committed to loyalty and values that make us better humans. The animation was good over all, but could have been better. It did not detract from the overall film because you so quickly get into the story. I hope you give it a chance, sit back and enjoy the adventure. It's worth every moment spent as the characters with their powerful voices give credibility to the story. The actors who lent themselves to the power of the film make it so real to watch you forget that it's animated. The hero takes responsibility for his actions and you become his fan. He is a great example of a true leader.

Kaptara is a great movie
ourknest4 November 2013
Kaptara has been a wonderful experience.. I have seen the movie three times and each time I am more amazed than the last.. Kudos to everyone involved in this project.. Your talents cannot be praised enough.. From the wonderful Director, Writer, Animator, to the fantastic voice over actors to the Minataur (how could I forget him)!! to the set designs and to the artists.. You all outdid yourselves. The music was so powerful and brought so many emotions to the screen. Gut wrenching at times.. no pun intended! From an Independent film with a low budget this is quite an accomplishment and a dream fulfilled.. You all should be proud. NOW THE WORLD IS WAITING FOR A THEATRICAL RELEASE.. its worthy of such a distribution.. Looking forward to seeing more… Robin Karsh
