The Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles has announced the juries and additional programming for the upcoming 14th edition, which runs April 6-10 in Hollywood.
Three films have been added to the line-up on April 10, including Lena Khan’s feature debut The Tiger Hunter, and a community screening of Sami Khan’s Khoya.
A restored version of Sujata, provided by the National Film Archive Of India, will screen as a tribute to director Bimal Roy on the 50th anniversary of his death.
The jury for the 2016 Narrative Film Competition includes:

Documentary from Australian war artist George Gittoes centres on street kids in Afghanistan.
Tel Aviv-based sales company Cinephil has acquired the worldwide right to George Gittoes’ Snow Monkey ahead of its international premiere in competition at Idfa (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam) (Nov 18-29).
The film is a portrait of daily life in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, where art activist Gittoes recruited gangs of war-damaged children to shoot local, Pashto-style films - vibrant, colorful and infused with the violence they experience on a daily basis.
Gittoes will return to Idfa, which runs Nov 18-29, having previously screened Miscreants of Taliwood, shot in Peshawar with Taliban-besieged filmmakers, some of which have helped create Snow Monkey.
Cinephil MD Philippa Kowarsky negotiated the deal with producers Gittoes and Lizzette Atkins of Unicorn Films.
Executive producers are Norway’s Torstein Grude and Bjarte Mørner Tveit for Piraya Film.

Philippa Kowarsky is the Managing Director of Cinephil, an international sales company that is renowned for securing financing and distribution for documentaries from all around the world. Kowarsky started Cinephil 18 years ago on the first of January in 1997.
Cinephil has a solid history of working with award winning films including Academy Award nominee, “The Gatekeepers“ (for which Kowarsky was a nominee, with Cinephil as the producer); the 2014 Academy Award nominee, “The Act of Killing, and Dror Shaul’s “Sweet Mud”, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.
Kowarsky, the first ever film sales agent of Israel, shares more about her background and the success of Cinephil:
I’ve was doing sales, marketing and production before I started Cinephil. I worked for some studios in Israel, and got into sales because there were no companies dedicated to sales only. I was representing films at the previous company I worked at — when I left, people just kept coming to me, saying “Will you take my film?” I started Cinephil and we got a film into Rotterdam’s mocumentary section. It was the first Cinephil festival. I didn’t even have a proper concept or mission for my company, but I did meet sales agents from around the world, and thought, “Perhaps we could have some sales agents in Israel!” Then it became a bit more formal.
We started doing everything - features, children’s programming, and documentaries -working with Israeli and Palestinian films. Over the years, we decided to drop children’s programming, and then let go of feature films (which I still love). Now Cinephil focuses on documentaries.
About 8 years ago, we decided to go International to represent films to the world, from the world – everywhere. It doesn’t matter where you’re based: Tel Aviv, Paris, Montreal or New York. Everyone is traveling to all the festivals, and everything is done by emails and phone. Thanks to technology, we have a very international career and life, and to make matters better, we also have Heather Wyer working for us out of Montreal. Having a North American base is great!
How did you enter the film industry?
A lot of this happened to me by chance. I received an Ma in London for communication policy studies. At the end of the day, it’s been helpful, because it has given me a deeper understanding of the media world. That’s been a strong part of Cinephil – being able to strategize with all this know-how.
When I started 20 years ago, there was very little international film and television activity in Israel. In the meantime, the Israeli industry has developed, but getting Israeli films into festivals was a big deal back then. Now our cinema is well received everywhere. There are fabulous agencies based in Israel, including our TV channels which selling product around the world.
How is Cinephil expanding?
We do sales and distribution and act as Ep’s on films. We’ve always been into development and raising finance for films, but recently the films we’ve been working with are of a higher profile. One of the highlights is when we came in as producers for “The Gatekeepers”, for which we were nominated for an Academy Award in 2012. In 2013, we were back in Los Angeles with “The Act of Killing”, which was nominated as well. We are proud to work with Joshua Oppenheimer and Signe Byrge Sorensen again on “The Look of Silence”, which premiered in competition in Venice last year and won the Grand Jury Award on top of four other awards. Since then, it has won countless awards worldwide. We’re now working with Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi on “The 50 Year Argument”.

We‘re thrilled to be working on a Cannes Classics premiere “By Sidney Lumet” by Nancy Buirski. Cinephil will present several films in the market. One is “Invasion”, by Abner Benaim, about the USA’s invasion of Panama.
Another is a film that we just picked up in Tribeca where it made headlines, titled “Among the Believers”, which follows the growth of the Red Mosques in Pakistan. It portrays a system that offers young children free food and accommodation, and, in return, the young adepts are force fed the principles of radical Islam from the moment they can read.
Other films in the Cannes Market include “Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of the National Lampoon”, which premiered in Sundance, and “The Yes Men are Revolting”, which will open in the Us this summer.
“Thank You for Playing”, follows a family struggling with a terminally ill boy. Ryan, his Dad, an indie video game developer, is building a poetic, autobiographical video game to document his pain and to tell the story of his baby. It’s sophisticated, touching and timely.

It's always interesting when an MPAA bulletin includes a re-rate, but most specifically when a film gets a new rating, a new rating reason, but the filmmakers didn't have to edit the film one bit. In today's bulletin that film is David Gordon Green's Manglehorn starring Al Pacino which was previously rated R for "some sexual material", but has now won a PG-13 rating on appeal with the reason for the rating given now as "for some sexual content and language, and for accident and surgery images". If you're wondering why all that wasn't mentioned for the "R" rating, the reason is the MPAA gives reasons for only the portion of the film that earned the film's rating. So, in the case of Manglehorn it was the "sexual material" that pushed the film over the edge into "R" territory, but now that it's "PG-13" rating film it's not only...

Ten films in today's MPAA ratings bulletin and ten R-ratings beginning with Todd Haynes' Carol starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, which will be heading to Cannes before hitting theaters later this year, most likely late as I expect the Weinsteins to milk this one, especially if it plays well on the Croisette. We also have Seth MacFarlane's Ted 2, which, unsurprisingly, received and R-rating, alongside a slew of smaller features including Results starring Guy Pearce and Cobie Smulders; Samba starring Omar Sy and Charlotte Gainsbourg and Robert Duvall's Wild Horses, which Duvall directed and stars in alongside James Franco, Josh Hartnett, Luciana Duvall, Adriana Barraza and Jim Parrack. The countries that are peace keepers are also the biggest manufacturers of weapons and the most profitable industries are the ones that are destroying this planet. One percent of the population owns more than the other ninety-nine together. Our system is fundamentally unjust. That is a fact and many of today's urgent problems are obliging us to examine the very framework of our society.When you scroll through the programme of this year's Human Rights Watch Film Festival (Hrwff), you cannot but notice that most of the 16 films, except for John Stewart's directing debut Rosewater, a film about the life of the Iranian-Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari, are documentaries. They are bringing us unknown stories from all over the world and they point to issues concerning violations of human rights.

The Yes Men Are Revolting will receive its New York premiere on November 20 as the closing night screening at Doc NYC and received its world premiere in Toronto.
The film marks the third episode in a series of titles by the prankster-activists and trains its sights on global warming and middle-aged activism.
Danielle Digiacomo brokered the deal with Cinetic Media on behalf of the filmmakers.

The Orchard has acquired North American rights to The Yes Men Are Revolting, the third installment of the documentary series featuring prankster-activists Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno. This time the Yes Men tackle the issues of global warming and middle-aged activism. The film, directed by Laura Nix along with Bichlbaum & Bonanno, premiered at Toronto and is screening Thursday at Doc NYC. It will be released theatrically and digitally across North America in 2015. Yes Men Are Revolting follows the duo’s The Yes Men (2003) and The Yes Men Fix The World (2009). The deal was negotiated by Danielle Digiacomo and Cinetic Media on behalf of the filmmakers.

Over the years, the Toronto International Film Festival has grown into one of the most well-known stops on the circuit, with numerous Oscar winners and other critically acclaimed films making their world premiere at Tiff, and others making their North American or International premiere at the fest. Thus, the films that end up at the festival have also become a source of interest to film fans. With the 2014 incarnation of Tiff making their first wave of announcements already, they have released a second list of the films that will be screening at Tiff 2014, which includes works from Frederick Wiseman, Joshua Oppenheimer, Michael Winterbottom, Jean-Luc Godard, Adam Wingard, and Sion Sono. The Toronto International Film Festival is known for its Oscar bait prestige dramas, major Hollywood studio releases, a focus (appropriately) on Canadian film and, to a lesser extent, its Midnight Madness program. One thing it doesn't have a strong reputation for is documentaries. That's why it's no surprise that only six of the initial 15 documentaries announced for the 2014 festival this morning are world premieres. Even with a 25th anniversary screening of Michael Moore's "Roger & Me" on deck, this year's documentary slate appears weak. Joshua Oppenheimer will screen his Indonesian genocide doc "The Look of Silence," Ethan Hawke has his nonfiction directing debut "Seymour: An Introduction" and Cannes favorite "Red Army" will be on hand, but all of those films debuted or will debut somewhere else first. Intriguing new docs include "Tales of the Grim Sleeper," about a serial killer's 25-year run in Southern California; "Sunshine Superman," about Base jumping...

This world is indeed a dangerous place and according to Tiff Doc programmer Thom Powers’ it might just be the docu filmmakers and subjects who are truly the “rebels, resisters and risk-takers” of the festival. While there might be a couple of more docu items in store along with a look back at Michael Moore’s Roger & Me, both Toronto, and Telluride auds will be in for treats with the Cannes invited Gabe Polsky’s Red Army and Venice Film Festival competing The Look of Silence (see pic above) from Joshua Oppenheimer (which is easily our most anticipated doc of the year) and Robert Kenner’s Merchants of Doubt — about the greediest folk there are: the spinsters (prediction: look for Kenner to be invited on Real Time with Bill Maher). This morning the 2014 Toronto Film Festival announced their Midnight Madness, Documentary, Vanguard and Contemporary Masters selections for this year's festival and several high profile names and films are included among the announced titles. The festival opens this evening (Nov 20) with the world premiere of Talal Derki’s Return To Homs, a feature doc that centres on young revolutionaries in Western Syria. Idfa’s international co-finance and production market will run Nov 25-27 in Amsterdam.
During the Idfa Forum, filmmakers and producers will present documentary projects to commissioning editors from international television stations and other providers of finance, with the aim of completing the finance for their documentary projects.
In total, 50 projects have been selected for the upcoming Idfa Forum, including the latest projects by Femke and Ilse van Velzen, Eva Mulvad and Marcus Vetter.
The Idfa 2013 screening program includes 18 documentaries presented as projects at previous editions of the Idfa Forum.
The 50 projects selected for the Idfa Forum 2013 will be pitched in various different settings: the central pitches in the Compagnietheater’s main hall; the round table pitches in the small hall; and one-on-one discussions with potential financiers.
For the second year in succession, the Idfa Forum includes the Work in Progress Screening category, aimed at stimulating sales and distribution.
