It’s an interesting month on HBO and Max this March, as two acclaimed films hit the streamer along with some intriguing original programming.
First up in the movies arena is the streaming debut of Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet. From beloved Paddington director Paul King, the film follows the adventures of a young Willy Wonka as he looks to become the world’s best (and weirdest) chocolatier. Later in March on Max, there’s also Dream Scenario, a highly-regarded comedy boasting Nicolas Cage as Paul Matthews, who suddenly starts appearing in people’s dreams for unknown reasons, and who naturally becomes very famous as a result of this strange phenomena.
Series-wise, the biggest show on Max this month is The Regime. It packs a solid cast, including Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant, and tells the story of “life within the walls of a modern...

Molly Shannon, who mined her Irish background to create delightful characters on Saturday Night Live and beyond, is the latest honoree to be announced for the 18th annual Oscar Wilde Awards.
The event, organized by the US-Ireland Alliance, celebrates the work of those from Ireland — and those with Irish roots, as in Shannon’s case — who contribute to film, television and music. It’s set for March 7, three days before the Academy Awards, at the Santa Monica home of Bad Robot, J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath’s production company.
Shannon, who grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, joins previously announced honorees Pierce Brosnan (born in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland) and Oscar-winning VFX artist Richard Baneham (born in Dublin).
“Molly’s Irish American characters on Saturday Night Live — like Mary Katherine Gallagher and Sally O’Malley — are iconic,” Trina Vargo, founder of the US-Ireland Alliance, said in a statement.

Hollywood decamps for Park City this week, braving snow drifts and thin air in a quest to find the next indie breakouts, Oscar contenders and buzzy horror hits.
Yes, Sundance has returned in all its mountain-side glory, and with it comes the expectation that with enough tenacity and some big checks, studios and streamers will land the next “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Brooklyn,” “Manchester by the Sea” or “The Big Sick” (to rattle off just a few of the festival films that have sparked all-night bidding wars).
Of course, not every heated battle for the next big Sundance-bred hit leads to commercial success and Oscar glory (“Hamlet 2” or “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” know a bit about that). Even some of the 2023 films that landed major deals, such as John Carney’s “Flora and Son” or the Anne Hathaway-led “Eileen,” received a muted reception when they made...

Editor’s note: Jesse Andrews is author of the novel Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, which is one of five books pulled from the library shelves of high schools within the purview of Tallahassee, Florida-based Leon County Schools superintendent Rock Hanna, after the Leon County chapter of the conservative group Moms for Liberty petitioned the schools to remove the book because of the frank depiction of sex and gender identity issues. The others include Push, the Sapphire-penned book that inspired the film Precious; Doomed by Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk; Lucky by Alice Sebold; and Dead End by Jason Meyer. Still being scrutinized is an autobiography of tennis great Billie Jean King, because it discusses her sexuality. This has been an ongoing theme precipitated by policies passed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and legislative Republicans. DeSantis is running for president and probably figured to ride his brawl with Disney into the White House,...

In 2007, just after her breakout movie role as brittle, sizeist mean-girl Amber Von Tussle in Adam Shankman’s “Hairspray,” actor Brittany Snow took to the pages of People to talk about her own longtime battle with anorexia. But in a cultural moment that was peculiarly hostile to the mental health crises of young female celebrities — it was also the year that Britney Spears shaved her head — the response to her op-ed was dismissive. Now, 16 years and something of a sea change in social attitudes later, the sheer sincerity of Snow’s directorial debut is quite the rebuttal to those who accused her of mere attention-seeking back then. Unmistakably informed by personal, painful experience, “Parachute” pulls its ripcord early, determined to let its self-critical, struggling characters drift down to the soft landing Snow herself was not granted.

Actor Brittany Snow (the Pitch Perfect franchise, Hairspray) just about nails it as a writer-director with her first feature, Parachute, a rom-dram set in New York City and co-written with Becca Gleason (Summer ‘03).
This astute, impressively honest portrait of a complicated relationship between Riley (Courtney Eaton from Yellowjackets, who picked up a prize for her performance at SXSW), a young woman with an eating disorder and addiction issues, and Ethan (Thomas Mann, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), a guy disposed toward co-dependency, is perhaps a smidge messy structurally. But then again, so is life. Viewers, especially those in the same demographic as the protagonists, will probably cut the film and its vividly drawn characters some slack as they try to navigate territory thickly peppered with emotional landmines.

Ryan Reynolds, a full-time K-Pop stan and occasional actor, has decided to dip his toes into the wonderful world of boybands. Gone are his days of admiring the artform from afar, as Reynolds is now attached to star in and produce "Boy Band," an upcoming comedy from Paramount. Reynolds penned the script with co-writer Jesse Andrews and will also reunite with frequent collaborator Shawn Levy.
Clearly, Levy and Reynolds are creatively infatuated — or just really good friends. The duo has made a habit of working together with Levy directing the actor in "Free Guy," "The Adam Project," "Deadpool 3" and potentially, "Boy Band." Per The Hollywood Reporter, the film is a potential directing venture for Levy but only if the timing works for his already jam-packed schedule. The two of them are currently in prep for "Deadpool 3," and Levy also has the upcoming season of "Stranger Things" on the near horizon.

In the discussion of quintessential high school movies, each decade has their iconic entry: the ‘70s had Grease, the ‘80s had Fast Times at Ridgemont High, the ‘90s had Dazed and Confused, the ‘00s had Superbad, and…well, that’s it, apparently. According to Seth Rogen, there hasn’t been a great high school movie since 2007’s Superbad.
On the topic, Seth Rogen, who co-wrote Superbad with Evan Goldberg, told People, “No one’s made a good high school movie since then.” Rogen’s comment stems from working alongside Gabe Labelle in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans. “What’s crazy is that Gabe Labelle is like, 19 years old and his and his friends’ favorite movie is Superbad…So it never changed for some reason.”
While Superbad was clearly a hit and has a continued following, to say it’s the only good high school movie in the past 15 years is quite an overstatement.

This year, women directors – and their women-centric subjects – swept the awards at Sundance Film Festival. Three women directors – Madeleine Gavin, Maryam Keshavarz, and Noora Niasari – won Audience Awards for their films on North Korea (“Beyond Utopia”), intergenerational motherhood (“The Persian Version”), and custody in diaspora (“Shayda”). Portraits of masculinity were also celebrated as well. First-time feature filmmaker Sing J. Lee won the Directing Award for his touching portrait of masculinity and fatherhood in “The Accidental Getaway Driver,” while Sauvnik Kaur’s intimate documentary on brotherhood “Against The Tide” took home a Special Jury Award. After two years of isolation and virtual festival-ing, it seems that stories of tenderness appealed over aggressive storytelling at Park City this year.
“This year’s Festival has been an extraordinary experience,” said Joana Vicente, Sundance Institute CEO. “The artists that comprise the 2023 Sundance Film Festival have demonstrated a sense of urgency and dedication to excellence in independent film.

If you set out to combine the worst parts of Hallmark holiday movies with the worst parts of frenetic ‘90s rom-coms, you’d probably wind up with something a lot like “About Fate.” The women are nuts, the men are clueless and the production is so cheap you could pass the time spotting every mistake no one bothered to fix.
Maybe a movie that has so little ambition doesn’t deserve such a harsh summation. But we have, for the most part, moved beyond the most enervating chick-flick stereotypes. So it’s more than a little dispiriting to see Margot (Emma Roberts) lose her mind when her boyfriend Kip suggests they get dinner at Bennigan’s.
For reasons that make sense only to screenwriter Tiffany Paulsen — who also wrote the Roberts vehicles “Nancy Drew” and “Holidate” — Margot is fixated on the idea that Kip must be proposing. They’ve only been dating for three months,...

“Lessons in Chemistry,” the upcoming Apple TV+ drama series led and executive produced by Brie Larson, has added Lewis Pullman, Aja Naomi King, Stephanie Koenig, Patrick Walker, Thomas Mann, Kevin Sussman, Beau Bridges to the cast.
The series is set in the early 1950s and follows Elizabeth Zott (Larson), whose dream of being a scientist is put on hold in a society deeming that women belong in the domestic sphere, not the professional one. When Elizabeth finds herself pregnant, alone and fired from her lab, she musters the ingenuity only a single mother has. She accepts a job as a host on a TV cooking show, and sets out to teach a nation of overlooked housewives — and the men who are suddenly listening — a lot more than recipes, all the while craving a return to her true love: science.

When it was announced five months ago that Gaspard Ulliel — the wolfishly handsome beau of films including “A Very Long Engagement”, “Saint Laurent” and “Sibyl” — died suddenly in a freak skiing accident at 37, peopled mourned the world over for one the most charming actors working in contemporary Gallic cinema. With his good-natured, sleepy grin and icy blue eyes that concealed a glint of malice, it made perfect sense in his smattering of sly roles that his trademark dimple was actually, in fact, a scar.
And it’s a perverse coincidence that his final feature film is entirely concerned with our hopelessness in the face of the inevitable onslaught of death. Perhaps talk about Emily Atef’s bleakly funereal “More Than Ever” as an abrupt bookend to Ulliel’s career will overshadow the fact that , giving space for its subject to be selfish even if that means opting for the cruelest...

Back in October 2019, before the pandemic, we brought you news about American Civil War movie Freedom’s Path.
The feature, which charts the friendship between a Union soldier and a runaway slave who is helping facilitate the Underground Railroad, stars Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting), Rj Cyler (Me And Earl And The Dying Girl) and Gerran Howell (Catch 22). Post-production has just wrapped.
As it turned out, the project would mark the final stops on the journey of two veteran actors who died while the movie was in post-production: Thomas Jefferson Byrd, a frequent Spike Lee collaborator, and New Orleans native Carol Sutton, both of whom had supporting roles.
Both actors died in sad circumstances. Tony-nominee Byrd was murdered in Atlanta and Sutton died of complications from Covid.
Today, the production has chosen to release two images of the admired actors in their final film, marking the first official stills from the movie.

Rj Cyler has been cast in a series regular role in the upcoming Issa Rae HBO Max comedy series “Rap Sh*t,” Variety has learned.
The series follows two estranged high school friends from Miami, Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion), who reunite to form a rap group. Cyler will play Lamont, an aspiring music producer with a sharp ear for talent. He is also the loving but sometimes absentminded young father to Melissa, so by association, he has a complicated relationship with Mia. Jonica Booth and Devon Terrell also star in the series.
Cyler broke out with his performance in the feature “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” which he quickly followed up with the big-budget film adaptation of “Power Rangers” and the Brad Pitt film “War Machine.” He also starred in the film “White Boy Rick” and will next be seen in “The Harder They Fall” alongside Idris Elba,...

When someone says “it’s a Sundance movie,” you probably know what they mean: the sort of small, sometimes scrappy movies that helped turn Robert Redford’s film fest out in Utah into both a welcome alternative to big-studio tentpoles (now more than ever!) and a kingmaking institution. It’s a catch-all term, and you don’t to have attended the festival to have seen a Sundance movie. Should you have found yourself left smiling and slack-jawed, or simply moved, by Eighth Grade, or The Spectacular Now, or Minari, or Half Nelson,...

“Coda” was one of the most talked about films at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, winning a whopping four prizes: the Grand Jury and Audience Awards, plus directing kudos for Sian Heder and a Special Jury Prize for its ensemble cast. But how does it fare with movie critics since it opened on August 13? And how will it do at the upcoming Oscars?
Let’s start with the reviews. The film has received positive notices, scoring 73 on MetaCritic based on 34 reviews counted thus far: 28 positive, six somewhat mixed, and none outright negative. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, which doesn’t classify reviews as mixed, only as positive or negative, the film is rated 95% fresh based on 153 reviews counted, only seven of which are classified as rotten. The difference between the Mc and Rt scores indicates that there is almost universal like for the movie, but not universal love.

It’s not that hard to get a streaming title seen by awards voters. Best Picture winner “Nomadland” would have been a major Oscar player whenever it came out, but it was a surprise that during the pandemic, Amazon took TIFF 2019 selection “Sound of Metal” to six Oscar nominations and two tech wins, further than many would have predicted.
That brings us to “Coda,” which Apple acquired for a record-breaking $25 million and won the Grand Jury, Audience Award, Best Director, and Ensemble Acting prizes at the virtual 2021 Sundance Film Festival. Sian Heder’s moving drama about a deaf family stars British singer-actress Emilia Jones and Oscar-winner Marlee Matlin (“Children of a Lesser God”). It opens August 13, both in theaters and on Apple’s streaming service, AppleTV+.

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, the director of “Me And Earl and the Dying Girl,” will next direct a filmed adaptation of “The Fortress of Solitude,” the acclaimed, best-selling novel by Jonathan Lethem, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

The American Film Institute (AFI), in partnership with Anthony and Joe Russo’s studio Agbo, has named Christina Kelly Holmes as this year’s recipient of the Agbo/AFI Conservatory Development Grant.
Now in its third year, the program awards $25K to a recent AFI Conservatory graduate to develop at least one project with a year-long mentorship from Agbo.
Holmes received the grant for her project For Women Only, a one-hour drama set in 1980s communist Romania about a blacklisted classically trained pianist who becomes a black-market entrepreneur smuggling goods for women into one of the most oppressive regimes in modern history.

For quite some time now, films released by Pixar Animation Studios have held a certain level of gravitas and audiences have come to expect something special with almost every release. The latest offering from studio, Luca, while not on the level of its best films, is a charming and often endearing tale of a young person finding his place in the world while, at the same time, striving to make it better for others around him as well. In short, it’s a story and lesson that couldn’t come at a better time.
Set in a seaside town on the Italian Riviera, this coming-of-age story about a young boy named Luca (voice of Jacob Tremblay) and his adventures with a newfound best friend, Alberto (voice of Jack Dylan Grazer) as they explore the world above the water for the first time. Family films rarely succeed at one level of storytelling, so it’s particularly impressive that “Luca” operates so well on multiple levels. For children, this is a story about friendship and being true to yourself and coping with parents who are afraid to send you out into the world.
For adults, it’s all that and much more; for LGBTQ+ audiences, in particular, the film offers a powerful metaphor about the closet, about “passing” as something that you are not and about finding the people who will love you when they finally get to know the real you.
That might sound like a lot of heavy material for an animated feature, but Pixar vet Enrico Casarosa’s directorial debut is as light and lovely as a long summer afternoon with a new friend and a cold lemonade. Or a limonata in this case, as the film takes place in an...

Hulu has ordered a one-hour drama pilot titled “Olga Dies Dreaming,” based on the yet-to-be-published novel of the same name. Author Xochitl Gonzalez and Alfonso Gómez-Rejón are attached to executive produce, with Gonzalez writing, and Gómez-Rejón directing. Twentieth Television will produce.
Per the logline, “Olga Dies Dreaming” is the story of a Nuyorican brother and sister from a gentrifying Sunset Park, Brooklyn, reckoning with their absent, politically radical mother and their glittering careers among New York City’s elite in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
Gonzalez will be making her small-screen debut as a writer and as an executive producer. A native Brooklynite and “proud public school graduate,” Gonzalez received her B.A. in fine art from Brown University and is currently an Mfa candidate in fiction at the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she is an Iowa Arts Fellow and the recipient of the Michener Copernicus Award for Fiction.

Photo: ‘Thoroughbreds’/Focus Features Earlier this year, Anya Taylor-Joy shot up to stardom thanks to her main role in the critically acclaimed series ‘The Queen’s Gambit’. And while Taylor-Joy is new to the industry, she’s no stranger to mega-hit movies like 2016’s ‘Split’. Although Split introduced Taylor-Joy to Hollywood blockbusters, her performance in 2017’s indie flick ‘Thoroughbreds’ was what solidified her as a rising actress. 'Thoroughbreds' In Cory Finley’s directorial debut, Taylor-Joy stars alongside Olivia Cooke (‘Me and Earl And The Dying Girl’) as a porcelain socialite named Lily stuck in a gilded birdcage. Even with her gorgeous property in an affluent area of Connecticut, it’s clear Taylor-Joy doesn’t fit in, no matter how hard she tries. Opposite her is Cooke’s emotionless, sociopathic character Amanda who counteracts Taylor-Joy’s refusal to say what she actually means. With a deadpan stare and dry one-liners,...

There’s a genre of literature, rife with fear and dismay, that’s more steeped in sinister fate than the novels of Thomas Hardy, more flecked with cruelty than the bad-dream collages of William Burroughs. It’s so infused with a sense of life’s unfairness that merely to read it is to stalk the darkness.
I’m talking, of course, about YA fiction.
Someday, somebody will write an academic thesis — maybe it’s already been done — about why so many YA tales hinge on events of grandiose misfortune. Fatal cases of cancer, cataclysmic car accidents, or, in the case of “The Ultimate Playlist of Noise,” a sweet handsome menschy suburban teenager, Marcus Lund (Keean Johnson), who must undergo a brain operation that will leave him deaf. You could argue that the darkness of these stories is a way of respecting young audiences, a way of forcing them to confront how tough life can be.
