This is another under the radar gem, this is another one of the only beat em ups from one of my favorite video game companies SNK/Neo Geo. I always found it kind of strange despite how many games in the fighting genre they specialized in, they never really build up on the beat em up genre alongside. Which I think is too bad because the company showed they were capable of make these kinds of games and some possible potential in that area they could of capitalized on more.
Not much to say, plotline is the typical cliché where an evil robot empire is taking over the city and you are part of a Robotic task force to stop them. Yeah, that's it in a nut shell but like most beat em ups the plotline isn't all that important as like with all beat em ups we're here for the action. Though one of the things that make this game unique is the fact that your beating the crap out of robots the whole time which is something I strangely haven't seen in beat em ups usual it's always criminals, I really like that I felt it was a bit of a change of pace from the standard fare; the only other time I seen this was "The Ninjawarriors" for the SNES another under the radar gem and another story.
Both characters one a cyborg and one a good robot they have the basic punch and kick moves, but both have different superpower moves. With the cyborg he shoots out laser walls from both directions that can take down many enemies' front and back but also help blow away bosses; along with the robot whom shoots out an incendiary fireball that breaks apart in the air and turns into many that reign down on enemies that surround your whole perimeter. This feature might not make the game seem unique as most beat em ups have the emergency resort feature but what makes this unique is that both run on a gauge. If you collect enough of the power balls to make the gauge full then you can use your power to its fullest potential but if your power is drained a little, then your power will only work at minimum potential so use your power when you absolute must.
There is even a moment where you gain a power up you transform into a car and can run down enemies which I though was cool, but this lasts for a minimum amount of time so take as many down as possible.
You have some weapons like the typical barrels and wrecked cars to throw at a group of enemies and blow them away. Or even when you take out an enemy sometimes an arm is on the ground you can use to bat them with. But I really like how we see each of the robots blow up to scrap, from dismembering their torso from their waist so that we see their legs still operating before they blow. Another is a finisher whenever you grab one of the robots and then slice them in half with a knife hand strike that my favorite. Music is decent and there is even a little variation in levels to keep things interesting somewhat.
The only bad things are some of the boss battle feel kind of the same, a few of the bosses acted the same and attacked in the same pattern but are just dressed differently and with a few different features. Another is the fighting mechanic is rather shallow, I really felt there should have been something more to what we're doing like may 'be some sort of throws, more types of finishers, moves to help make things more interesting. Also, the game is rather short and kind of easy by my standards, though same can be said about a lot of beat em ups out there, ride is short but a sweet ride.
Though to me the real shame about this game is that it never had a sequel let alone became a franchise, like any techno toy there was a lot more potential to be had and built on with this game. Like many 'be in the sequel we can have four or five characters to select from, more to the combo system like some throws, more weapons, finishers, transformations, variety in enemies and levels, just so many things that could have been upgraded for the better, too bad.
Overall, it's a solid beat em up, it's a B list beat em up at best, but it's a fun one all the same and like any well automated machine it's worth a test run.
