The found-footage horror film is really the Dogma 95 movement of its genre-bold, daring, and nearly impossible to commit to. While inserting a documentary crew into a survival situation solves certain problems, it creates multitudes of others, principally making elaborate camera set-ups and jump scares at all compatible with a lo-fi aesthetic. The Frankenstein Theory is only the most recent example, but typifies problems that have been around at least since The Blair Witch Project. It might not be the worst film to take that approach, but it certainly pushes boundaries to their breaking point.

Title: The Frankenstein Theory Directed by: Andrew Weiner Starring: Kris Lemche, Brian Henderson, Heather Stephens, Joe Egender, Timothy V. Murphy Running time: 87 minutes, Not Rated Special Features: None A “found footage” film about a group of filmmakers who travel to the Northwest Territories of Canada in search of a monster that inhabits the forest that may have been the basis for Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The whole premise is just dumb. Let’s all go into the middle of nowhere where it’s freezing cold, miles from civilization and cell phone reception and try to film a murderous monster…a monster that supposedly existed 200 years ago, yet is still orangutan strong and [ Read More ]

This week Image Entertainment released first-time director Andrew Weiner's docu-style indie thriller The Frankenstein Theory, which resurrects one of the genre's most beloved giants as a 300-year-old experiment gone awry in the Arctic Circle, on DVD and VOD.
Co-written by Weiner and Vlady Pildysh, The Frankenstein Theory stars Kris Lemche, Christine Lakin, Joe Egender, Heather Stephens, Eric Zuckerman and Brian Henderson. Dread Central recently chatted with Weiner about his first-time experiences at the helm of the found-footage style project, what inspired the story of The Frankenstein Theory, whether or not he's got a plan for a sequel and much more.
Read on for our exclusive interview with up-and-coming indie filmmaker Weiner for Indie Horror Month, and make sure to check out The Frankenstein Theory now that it's available everywhere!

When I saw the promotional material for "The Frankenstein Theory," I admit rolling my eyes and thinking the movie sounded ridiculous. I couldn't help but have low expectations going into it with cover art exclaiming, "From the creators of 'The Last Exorcism.'" Whenever a movie carries a bi-line like that to promote it, you can bet it's going to be a disappointment. This indie found "footage" film is the perfect example of a concept that shouldn't work but did.
Desperately driven to prove himself to the world, Professor John Venkenheim leads a documentary film crew to the edge of the Arctic Circle. He intends to expose to the world his inconceivable theory. He believes that Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" is a work of non-fiction disguised as fantasy and that the creature is alive and well. As they travel deeper into the desolate snow-covered plains, strange events and happenings unfold around them.

I really wanted to like The Frankenstein Theory, the synopsis was fantastic and I was very intrigued by this premise. However this film just does not deliver in the end, and I really wanted to it. There is a lot of build up in the beginning and then it seems to stall and I was let down.
This film takes the idea that the novel of Frankenstein was actually based on fact. We find this out as a documentary crew are interviewing Professor John Venkenheim (Kris Lemche), who reveals to them a strange family history. His ancestors were members of the Illuminati and they conducted experiments, and a creature was created. The group embark on a journey to find 'Frankenstein' and it all gets filmed …
See that sounds awesome right? The first 15 minutes or so are really well done, and then it kind of lost me.

Thus far 2013 is not looking very promising for the horror genre. We at Bhm are still holding out hope it will improve possibly significantly with the Evil Dead and Carrie remakes respectively. But early disappointments from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D and The Last Exorcism 2 have soured the mood somewhat. There was not much anticipation for the The Frankenstein Theory but it will sadly join the list of disappointments. Given the potential it had to resurrect floundering interest in one of horrors earliest giants the squandered opportunity by Director Andrew Weiner is lamentable indeed.

What if Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein was actually a true story? That’s the basis for The Frankenstein Theory, which started a limited theatrical and VOD release last week, and will be released to DVD on March 26th. I recently had the opportunity to talk with director Andrew Weiner, who told me about referencing the original material over the classic movies, and the challenges of a freezing, snow-covered shoot.
Thank you for taking the time to talk with Daily Dead. Can you tell me how this became the first project you’d take on as a director?
Andrew Weiner: I wrote the screenplay with Vlady Pildysh, a really talented writer that lives up in Alberta, Canada. I’ve worked with him before and one day he said: “What if we do something where Frankenstein is based on true events?” That was really the launching pad and, from there, we wrote a detailed screenplay together.

When it comes to found footage films, I’ve pretty much run the course. I’ve seen all the triple-a Hollywood titles (Blair Witch, Paranormal Activity) and nearly every straight to DVD wannabe released in the last decade: Bigfoot: The Lost Cost Tapes, Area 407, Grave Encounters 1 and 2, The Amityville Haunting and a dozen more. To put things bluntly, most of them are terrible. It’s the cheapest way to make a horror movie so it makes sense that filmmakers would flock to it and the outcome is handfuls of mediocre, jump scare ridden, terribly written, poorly acted horror movies.
I am happy to say that The Frankenstein Theory does an excellent job at avoiding those downfalls. Now while many of the advertisements you see come tagged with “from the makers of The Last Exorcism,” this is a bit of a stretch. This is Andrew Weiner’s first foray into...
