Kenzo has launched “Music Is My Mistress,” a short film by director Kahlil Joseph, the mind behind Beyoncé’s “Lemonade”, Kendrick Lamar’s “m.A.A.d” and Flying Lotus’ “Until the Quiet Comes.” The short stars actors Jesse Williams and Tracee Ellis Ross alongside musician Kelsey Lu. Watch the film below.

“Having Tracee, Jessie, Lu and Ish also collaborate was amazing,” said Kenzo creative directors Carol Lim and Humberto Leon in a statement. “The atmosphere on set was so unique and we think that’s visible in the film. Everyone brought their diverse talents together to create something beautiful.”
True to the director’s style, the short doesn’t follow a linear pattern, and music definitely takes center stage. It features music by Shabazz Palaces and Lu. “It’s a trailer wrapped in a music video inside a short film.

Flying Lotus is already a wildly creative musical talent, bending electronic music (and more) to his will across albums like Cosmogramma, Until The Quiet Comes, and You’re Dead! So it would only follow that his foray into feature filmmaking with “Kuso” wold be equally adventurous.

Kahlil Joseph is one of the fastest rising stars in the short film world. His style is highly influenced by Terrence Malick, whom he worked under as an editor. He has also collaborated with Kendrick Lamar. In his music video for Flying Lotus’ “Until The Quiet Comes,” Joseph begins and ends the film with his central figure floating underwater. There is a similar scene in “Lemonade” during the “Pray You Catch Me” segment where Beyonce floats through an underwater bedroom. Melina Matsoukas is a music video director whose filmography contains a gold mine of A-List music stars: Ludacris, Lady Gaga,...

At one point during Friday night’s conversation between directors Kahlil Joseph and Terence Nance, the latter said that seeing the former’s “Black Up,” which “portrays a fever dream induced by the music of Shabazz Palaces,” on a big screen, helped him to get a different read on the film than he’d had from watching on his laptop. This time, he noticed that the eyes of an actress, purportedly in a fugue state, were wide open. I too had a similar experience viewing “Until the Quiet Comes,” “The Model” Pts One and Two, “Wildcat,” and the aforementioned “Black Up” on the theatrical screen of the International House in Philadelphia, the Blackstar Film Festival’s screening venue....

Kendrick Lamar will premiere his short film m.A.A.d at Sundance Next Fest in Los Angeles.
The 14-minute film, inspired by his 2012 good kid, m.A.A.d city album, centres on life in Lamar's South Central Los Angeles and features shots of his neighbourhood.
Directed by Kahlil Joseph, it's described as "a kaleidoscope of storylines and ideas that defy typical categorisation to explore new languages and new forms".
Joseph previously won a Sundance Award for Until the Quiet Comes, a collaboration with Flying Lotus.
m.A.A.d will be shown on August 9, when both Lamar and Joseph will participate in a panel discussion.
The rapper is currently preparing his next album, and there are rumours of a collaboration with Stevie Wonder.

I’m pretty sure that four years back when Trevor Groth and John Cooper (Sundance programming tandem who overhauled, switched over and re-defined the Spotlight section) knew just how significant the Next section (“less is greater than”) would become in the American independent-filmmaking sphere. Tomorrow, the Sundance Institute debuts its first ever Next Weekend program in Los Angeles and over the course of one weekend, denizens of La will get to experience a slew of films from the 2013 program, including much talked about titles like Hannah Fidell’s A Teacher (pictured above), Eliza Hittman’s It Felt Like Love and Alexandre Moor’s Blue Caprice. More intriguingly, a pair of titles not included in the original fest lineup, like Madeleine Olnek’s The Foxy Merkins and Chadd Harbold’s How to Be a Man make an appearance in the mini-festival event, which we assume were not ready in time to make the initial selection,...

Here's Kahlil Joseph's follow-up work to his Sundance 2013 Special Jury Award-winning short film Until The Quiet Comes, which we featured on S&A last fall. This lyrical piece of art film is titled Wildcat, which explores the "little-known African-American rodeo subculture," in Grayson, Oklahoma. According to Joseph: Black people are light years more advanced than the ideas and images that circulate would have you believe. The spaces we control and exist are my ground zero for filming, at least so far, and there are opportunities for me to tap into the energy. So an all-black town with an all-black rodeo in the American heartland was a...
