My opinion on the Spice and wolf:merchant meets the wise wolf
aggmosch16 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I like how it starts with holo telling her daughter her stories. The animation is OK, there are some changes from the old spice and wolf and from the book but it was expected. I like the way they made the Holo more childish, it fits perfect in her character. Till right now is an OK anime and a good rework from the old spice and wolf. Also for the guys that talking about nudity, she is a wolf. I don't think so that wolfs wear clothes. Also after the first 5 episodes Holo will be dressed like a nun and the only visible skin in her will be her face. One more thing. The fact that they showed Holo's daughter then it's very possible that the anime will follow all 17 books and will not stop in the near future.

Thus far, masterwork
mostlyharmless-3072820 April 2024
So far, this rendition of Spice and Wolf has been absolutely godly in quality. Whereas the original had a wonderful, unmatched atmosphere, the remake improves on almost every other quality. The least of which being that when dialogue goes on for a long time, there is far more expression and changes of focus on the scene to keep the audience engaged (making the dialogue less like a chore and more like a dance. So much attention to detail is payed, and the animation is on a level that is both relaxing and highly stimulating (a somewhat unusual combination). After Apothecary and Frieren I did not expect something of this level, but, in my book, this surpasses both.

The somewhat lower rating makes no sense. See for yourself.

Inherently Flawed Adaptation
tsunaioshikun9 April 2024
Smart parts of dialogue from the original story are being cut off and giving space for more scenes of nudidy and sillyness from both main characters. I'm sorry for those who are meeting the story for the first time in this adaptation. I'll change this rating if it goes uphill from here. But so far the direction seems very lazy. The directors seem to not understand the story at all.

The character design is pretty and the scenes are quite well drawn. There is nothing special about the animation so far, but we can notice it trying to save budget here and there. I'll keep following a bit more and change the review accordingly to how it progress from here.

A Visual Feast for Patient Fans
vatovato-6985127 May 2024
Ookami to Koushinryou: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf (2024) breathes new life into the beloved light novel series, captivating fans with its faithful adaptation and stunning visuals. While the 2008 anime holds a special place in many hearts, this new iteration elevates the source material in several key technical aspects.

Visually, the 2024 adaptation is a feast for the eyes. The animation is fluid and expressive, bringing the characters to life with meticulous detail. Holo's playful demeanor and Lawrence's thoughtful expressions are beautifully captured, immersing viewers in their heartwarming interactions. Background art is lush and detailed, meticulously recreating medieval European towns and countryside landscapes. The use of color is masterful, with warm hues and earthy tones creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood, whether it's the soft glow of candlelight in a tavern or the golden rays of sunlight filtering through a wheat field. The overall visual style is both nostalgic and modern, paying homage to the original anime while taking advantage of the latest animation techniques.

The sound design is equally impressive. The soundtrack, composed by Kevin Penkin, perfectly complements the visuals, enhancing emotional moments and adding depth to the story. Voice acting is top-notch, with both Japanese and English casts delivering nuanced performances that capture the essence of the characters. The sound effects are subtle yet effective, adding a layer of realism to the bustling marketplaces and quiet countryside roads.

However, while "Ookami to Koushinryou" is great piece of art, it might not appeal to everyone. The story is character-driven and unfolds at a deliberate pace, focusing on the relationship between Holo and Lawrence. Some viewers might find this slow and prefer anime with more action or plot twists. A significant portion of the story revolves around economics, trade, and merchant practices. While this is integral to the plot and character development, some viewers might find it dry or difficult to follow. The romance between Holo and Lawrence is subtle and develops slowly throughout the series. Some viewers might find this frustrating and prefer anime with more explicit romantic relationships.

Additionally, the anime assumes some familiarity with medieval European history and economics. Viewers lacking this knowledge might find certain aspects of the story confusing or less engaging. The original 2008 anime is considered a classic by many fans. The new adaptation, while well-received, might not live up to the high expectations set by its predecessor for some viewers.

In conclusion, Ookami to Koushinryou: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf (2024) is a technical marvel that faithfully adapts the beloved light novel series while elevating it visually and audibly. It's a must-watch for fans of the original anime and those seeking a heartwarming story, stunning visuals, and a captivating soundtrack. However, viewers seeking fast-paced action, explicit romance, or a plot not heavily reliant on economics might not find it to their taste.
