Season Seven Review

Season seven! They really have the machine of this shows production down now, don't they. I felt, around season five, that perhaps we'd seen every story that "Big Mouth" had to tell but season six, whilst not reaching the heights of the second run was a decent comeback. Season seven maintains that level and pushes us towards a new location (an unusual move for an animated series).

High school is looming for the Big Mouth kids, and a mid-term visit to the school causes various issues for them, particularly for Andrew (John Mulaney) who accidently molests a high school girl and whose boyfriend then threatens to kill him on his first day. Jay (Jason Mantzoukas) is destroyed when Lola (Nick Kroll) starts to date his older brother. Nick (Nick Kroll) meets Danni (Zazie Beetz) a high school girl and despite the age difference, wonders if he can date her.

This is the first season in a while that doesn't seem to introduce a main character, particularly a new emotion for the run. There are some episodes that do, such as Missy's anxiety morphing into a dread monster and a new hormone monster voiced by Megan Thee Stallion, but none have the sort of season long arc like the Shame Wizard. There's a shift away from the adults in this run, with all of the parents reduced in time and only coach Steve getting much of a story.

I didn't much care for the standalone "around the world" episode, even with the song from Lin Manuel Miranda in it, but the rest of the season was good. If you're reading this review, chances are that you've watched six seasons of the show already, so I'm preaching to an already converted audience. In that regard then I'd say that this was another good season of the show and one that sets up a paradigm shift for the eighth and final season.
