two entirely different ways to look at this

The positive review: This is the latest production featuring Mike Holmes, the "unlikely hero" who EXPLODED from Canadian TV by walking into new homes gone bad, and new renos of old homes gone bad, and NOT ONLY fixing everything in sight but also at the same time giving the viewer a weighty moral message. Think TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL only with a hammer.

The not-so-positive review: Interestingly, a lot of Canadians no longer watch the show. After the initial endorphin euphoria wears off, some critics have begun to see it as "repair pornography" noting that in real life miraculous strangers DO NOT APPEAR OUT OF NOWHERE to do tens of thousands of dollars of repairs to your house, in many cases actually upgrading stuff as they go, WITHOUT CHARGING YOU A DIME! So, the argument goes, why watch something that you know will never happen? And in real life no matter how many morality lectures Mike delivers from the pulpit, contractor fraud remains the #1 consumer gripe worldwide, followed closely by dissatisfaction with local laws intended to prevent that same fraud in the first place. Critics also note that Mike has become one of the most unlikely celebrities ever, and now has his own "talent team" to keep the riffraff from getting too close.

Recommendation: find reruns of the first series, the honeymoon series, HOLMES ON HOLMES, where everyone (the stars, the homeowners and Mike himself) were more innocent and trusting.
