Several times in this story, we see a Victorian family photograph where the face of one of the Blaise-Hamilton daughters has been scratched out; at the very end, Morse finds another photograph of this daughter which explains this, as the girl clearly has Down's Syndrome. This parallels the denouement of Roman Polanski's film, where a family photograph is seen in long shot several times, but it is only at the end that it is seen in close-up, revealing the clear mental disturbance of the Catherine Deneuve character.Rasputin: The Mad Monk (1966)
