This third week of April has some exciting home entertainment offerings for us genre fans, including the special edition releases of two cult classics I adore, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and The Stuff. An indie film I’ve been hearing about for a while now, Grimewave, also makes its way to DVD this Tuesday and while it may not be traditional horror, Oscar-winner The Revenant certainly has enough badassery contained within its cinematic frames to be worthy of mentioning this week, and it arrives on both Blu-ray and DVD on April 19th.
Other notable releases this week include Smothered (which features a ton of horror icons and was directed by John Schneider of Smallville and Dukes of Hazzard fame), 15 Till Midnight, Classroom 6, Ip Man 3, German Angst and She Wolf Rising.

John Schneider has done it all. He's found success in television, music and film. Most recently he decided to try his hand at something he's always loved: horror movies. With his new film Smothered being released soon, Schneider sat down with us to talk a bit more about the project.
As John Schneider isn't a name we normally associate with the horror genre, the writer and director of Smothered explained what led him to make the movie. "I've always been a horror fan," Schneider said.
"My mother used to subscribe to some magazine I remember seeing when I was a kid that had Frankenstein on the cover," he said of his early influences. "And when I was growing up in New York, there was a thing called 'Chiller Theater' and I'd watch that every week. I can still see the hand and the 'Chiiiillller' thing. So I've always been a fan.

Written and directed by John Schneider (“The Dukes of Hazzard”), Smothered is a kooky horror comedy bursting with blood-soaked cameos from the genre’s greatest icons such as Kane Hodder, Bill Moseley, R. A. Mihailoff, Malcolm Danare, and Don Shanks.
When the bogeymen find themselves on the other side of the blade – wielded by a big-busted blonde, no less – they pull out all the stops.
We got a chance to chat with Schneider one to one, and here’s what he had to say about cinematically killing these guys off one by one. And be sure to check back tomorrow for my partner in crime, Doctor Gash's, follow-up interview.
Dread Central: You’ve assembled a really great cast for Smothered. Can you talk about how you approached them to play parodies of horror villains, and what some of the reactions were?
John Schneider: I've known Kane and Malcolm for years.

Stars: Brea Grant, Kane Hodder, Bill Moseley, Don Shanks, R.A Mihailoff, Michael Berryman, John Kassir, Dane Rhodes, Shanna Forrestall, John Schneider, Adria Tennor, Andrew Bowen, Amy Brassette | Written and Directed by John Schneider
Horror comedy Smothered is written and directed by actor turned director John Schneider. Yes, you did read that correctly… Actor John Schneider, who many will know from family-friendly productions and his roles as Bo Duke on Dukes of Hazzard and more recently Jonathan Kent, aka Superman’s dad, on Smallville, has turned his hand to writing and directing in more recent years but who knew he had a penchant for penning horror? Admittedly he has had roles in low-budget monster movies such as Super Shark, Snow Beast and Lake Placid 2 but I had no idea he was such a horror fan – he certainly has to be to create such a love letter to the horror community as Smothered.

Sometimes you just don’t know who is a horror fan. I am surprised every now and again what I saw this past week was no exception. I’m talking about a film called Smothered which was directed by none other than Smallville and Dukes of Hazard’s John Schneider. Smothered boasts the largest collection of horror icons on one screen ever and it’s great to see them together. There is a lot of heart in the film and it shows when our group of horror actors are taking a moment to reflect on their careers. Kane Hodder and R.A. Mihailoff steal most of the show with great and very funny performances but everyone has their time to shine.

The first trailer is here for the new horror film from John Schneider (yes, that John Schneider of "Dukes of Hazzard fame). Smothered has a cast filled with a handful of beloved horror icons, who are all apparently playing themselves in it. Check it out!
From the Press Release
When John R. Schneider wrote Smothered, he wrote a reverse of the classic horror film model. Instead of a bunch of college-aged girls getting slaughtered by men in masks, his film features men of the mask getting slaughtered by a beautiful young vixen.
And, in a turn that will leave horror fans titillated, the film features a list of horror icons playing “themselves” in this “horroromedy” (horror/comedy) film with more humanity than you’d expect from a film where almost everyone dies.
The film, which stars Kane Hodder (Jason X, Hatchet), Ra Milhailoff (Leatherface, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3), Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects,...

Writer/director John R. Schneider conceived the horror meta-comedy Smothered as an inversion on the classic slasher trope: instead of depicting nubile ladies being pursued by monstrous, masked killers, he totally flips the script, depicting a psychotic young woman taking up the axe to prey on those movie boogeymen. The film features a gallery of beloved genre names – including Kane Hodder, famed Jason Voorhees portrayer as well as Hatchet's Victor Crowley; R.A. Milhailoff, who took on the role of Leatherface in Texas Chainsaw Massacre III; Bill Moseley, best known as “Chop-Top” from Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Otis in The Devil’s Rejects; and Brea Grant of Dexter and Rob Zombie's Halloween II. Even the '57 Plymouth Fury from Stephen King's Christine makes an appearance! “These are the real actors playing themselves for the most part, and that’s an element no one has explored before,” says Schneider,...
