- When a mysterious stranger interrupts a laundry routine with words of wisdom and a random magic trick, two best friends find themselves inexplicably incapable of lying. As they work together to break the spell, they discover how much is at stake when the truth comes out.
- In the heart of the Midwest in 1997, Kyle Miller (Mitchell Wray), an enterprising 19-year-old, dreams of launching PropPop, a party photo backdrop business, with his best friend, Eric Hernandez (Charlie Schultz). Eric, however, burdened by the weight of parental expectations, dawdles as a dutiful eldest child, wary of diving headfirst into Kyle's grand scheme.
Kyle and Eric skip college, opting to rent an apartment together and spend a year honing their business plan during routine visits to the local laundromat. One night, their routine is disrupted by the sudden appearance of a Mysterious Stranger (Deborah Asante), whose unexpected arrival sparks intrigue and mystery. With a magic coin trick and a whisper of wisdom, she sets the stage for a journey of truth and friendship.
As the next load of laundry begins, Kyle and Eric make the startling discovery that they are physically incapable of telling a lie. Despite Eric's first instinct to bolt, Kyle persuades him to stay and unravel the mystery together. As the friends work together to break the spell, Kyle opens up about his missing father, while Eric confronts his fear of disappointing his own. Inspired by his best friend's optimism that they'll be able to make their parents proud, Eric finally commits to moving forward with PropPop. The joy is short-lived, however, after Eric spills the beans about his parents' ongoing suspicions of Kyle's influence over Eric's life in everything from skipping college to not having a girlfriend.
Kyle is hurt by Eric's secret, but the issue of Eric's love life strikes a nerve unlike anything else - prompting Kyle to abruptly flee the laundromat, defying their pact to confront the spell together. Eric, bewildered by Kyle's reaction and desperate for answers, implores him to stay. Reluctantly, Kyle acknowledges the layers of untold truths between them run deeper than they thought just as a sudden stop to the laundry machine's spin cycle lifts the spell and grants the friends the freedom to lie once more.
Eric, reminded of the Stranger's cryptic words about truth and friendship, suspects her coins held the key to the enchantment all along and attempts to restart the washing machine, aiming to force the truth out of his friend. Ultimately, Eric decides that Kyle's confession should come willingly, not forced by magic, and Kyle agrees to tell Eric the truth as long as he doesn't have to see his face. The friends fashion a makeshift curtain from laundry carts and a sheet, positioned between them, so they see only faint shadows of one another. Summoning all his courage, Kyle finally reveals his secret.
