Xbox-exclusive Sea of Thieves is setting sail towards PlayStation waters. In a historic event, Microsoft has announced that four original games will be making their way to rival platforms, the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.
Rare moments like this weaken the invisible barrier between platforms and bring into question the future of the industry.

Days after Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love overperformed in its opening weekend at the box office, Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman stole a bit of the spotlight Feb. 20 in unveiling not one but four intersecting feature films from Sam Mendes about The Beatles, each focusing on one member of the Fab Four: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
“You have to match the boldness of the idea with a bold release strategy,” Rothman tells The Hollywood Reporter about the project that earned the Oscar-winning director a coveted signoff from the group’s selective label Apple Corps. “There hasn’t been an enterprise like this before, and you can’t think about it in traditional releasing terms.”
Sony hopes the films, which don’t yet have writers on board, will begin shooting in the U.K. in mid-2025 to make the planned 2027 release for all four titles,...

“Yellowstone” Season 5 has seen more drama behind the scenes than in front of the camera. Since the first half of the megahit modern Western’s fifth season ended on January 1, 2023, Paramount Network has announced that the series is ending after Part 2 and will be succeeded by a new sequel series that will potentially star Matthew McConaughey and Michelle Pfeiffer.
The series is ending in large part because of a bitter conflict between star and executive producer Kevin Costner and the studio – more on that below – and at this point, co-creator and showrunner Taylor Sheridan is reportedly planning to finish the show without Costner’s involvement.
And there are also smaller bits of drama, like Sheridan’s company, Bosque Ranch, suing star Cole Hauser for trademark infringement over Hauser’s coffee company’s logo, and Hauser and his co-stars Kelly Reilly and Luke Grimes in reportedly tense, take-it-or-leave-it negotiations with Paramount...

The video games industry continues to get bad news with more layoffs, this time from Sony itself. Per Bloomberg, Sony will lay off 900 people across its worldwide video game division (approximately 8% of its employees), and close its London studio that was responsible for several VR titles.
In addition, several titles in development have also been cancelled at Sony, including a new Twisted Metal title.
“After careful consideration and many leadership discussions over several months, it has become clear changes need to be made to continue to grow the business and develop the company,” stated Sony Interactive Entertainment President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Ryan in a message to staff posted on Sony Interactive’s website. Ryan will be departing the company next month.
The layoffs will also impact Insomniac (the studio behind Spider-Man and the upcoming Wolverine title), Naughty Dog (The Last of Us) and Guerrilla Games (Horizon). Guerrilla Games...

It appears to be an unfortunate day for both the workers of PlayStation and the fans. Earlier today, it was reported that the company is letting go of 900 employees from the PlayStation unit. The gaming industry has been in a massive slump since last year with thousands of people losing their jobs.
The fact that PlayStation posted record annual operating revenue on Friday brings into question this mass layoff. As expected, PlayStation’s move is now going to have a ripple effect on their projects as well. After all, games don’t make themselves.

Yellowstone is one of those shows that don’t come around very often.
It launched on Paramount Network in 2018 with respectable numbers by cable standards.
As each year has passed, the recognition has grown exponentially, and it’s now one of the most-watched shows in the U.S.
You can only imagine our surprise when it was revealed last year that the second part of Yellowstone Season 5 would bring the sprawling western to a close.
Shows this big don’t just drift off into the night, so there’s a plan to continue the franchise.
The main show, though, will cease to exist later this year.
Unrest between Kevin Costner and the Yellowstone cast and creatives are to blame

Long before he sauntered into the role of John Dutton III and seized the reins of the family ranch on Yellowstone, Kevin Costner was one of the most in-demand filmmakers and leading men in Hollywood.
Now, the Oscar- and Emmy-winner is ditching the small screen and returning to his roots.
In what might be his most ambitious project to date, Costner has directed a sprawling Western epic that will be released in theaters in two parts this summer.
This is a man who was born to saddle up and gaze into the camera from beneath a wide-brimmed Stetson, so naturally, Costner will be playing the lead role in both films.
The first trailer dropped today, and anticipation among Costner devotees and horse opera fanatics is at an all-time high.
So, without further ado, here's everything we know about Horizon: An American Saga.

Part one of “Horizon: An American Saga,” the multi-film Western epic that Kevin Costner left “Yellowstone” to make, will hit theaters on June 28, with part two to follow on August 16. Warner Bros. released a trailer for the two-part film on Monday.
The trailer promises a sprawling, colorful, violent Western film about Manifest Destiny. It’s about the settling of the titular town during the years of the Civil War, as the American frontier pushes westward and settlers come into conflict with the people indigenous to the land. “There’s no army on this Earth that are going to stop those wagons coming,” a Union Army officer played by Costner’s “Yellowstone” co-star Danny Huston warns in something like the trailer’s thesis statement.
Costner wrote the script for “Horizon” with Jon Baird, produces with Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard, directs, and stars. It’s his first time directing a film since 2003’s “Open Range,...

Kevin Costner has revealed the trailer for the first installment of Horizon: An American Saga, his upcoming multi-part, self-funded western. Horizon Part One is set to hit theaters on June 28th, 2024, with part two following just weeks later on August 16th.
Horizon has been Costner’s passion project for decades, having first begun working on it in 1988. He wrote directed, and stars in the film — and also largely financed it himself (apparently by mortgaging his house). It’s also the reason why Costner decided to depart Yellowstone.
After securing a distribution deal with Warner Bros. and New Line in 2022, Costner left the set of Yellowstone and headed to Utah, where he shot the first two installments of Horizon in succession. Depending on the success of those films, Costner hopes to make two more installments.

Few Hollywood stars alive today are as closely associated with the Western as Kevin Costner. From Dances With Wolves, to Open Range, to Wyatt Earp and beyond, he’s long seemed at home in the Old West, telling stories of American history. Not to mention, in recent years he’s rustled up millions of viewers as the figurehead of Yellowstone, one of the biggest TV phenomenons of the last decade. But it’s now that he’s about to unleash his all-out Western epic – a long-gestating passion project titled Horizon: An American Saga, in which he stars as well as directing, co-writing (along with Jon Baird), and produces. It is, in fact, two feature-length movies – actually set to be four, if he continues to the full fruition of his vision – to be released cinematically this summer. Sorting through America’s history is a Herculean task. Humans built the nation with blood, sweat, and tears, watering the soil with memory, pain, and perseverance. Today, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga trailer explores the settlement of America’s Western frontier from the Indigenous groups who blessed the land to those who occupied it by force. Horizon will be Kevin Costner‘s first time directing a movie since Open Range in 2003. He also busted out his directing chops for The Postman and Dances with Wolves, the latter of which earned him an Academy Award for Best Director.
Kevin Costner’s Horizon will “span 15 years in the settlement of America’s Western frontier, and focus on both the settlers as well as the Indigenous groups that first occupied the land.”
Here’s the official synopsis for Horizon: An American Saga courtesy of Warner Bros.:

Hollywood is going through a two-parter movie phase right now. In the past two years, we've seen big franchises like "Fast & Furious," "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," and "Mission: Impossible" all split sequels into two parts, while franchise hopefuls like "Dune" and "Rebel Moon" have also become two-parter movies. Even "Wicked" is hoping to tell its story in two movies. On paper, most of those decisions make some sense: Those are big genre movies with loads of story (and a lot of potential money to be made from extending that story), so rather than make one very long movie, they've opted for two. What is much more surprising is seeing a Western join that club. But that isn't stopping Kevin Costner from turning his passion project "Horizon: An American Saga" into one of the biggest box office gambles of 2024. This is Costner's first directorial effort in 21 years, and much like in 2003 with "Open Range,...

Kevin Costner has released the first full trailer for Horizon: An American Saga, his wildly ambitious, four-part post-Civil War Western epic that helped lure the actor away from his other Western — Paramount Network’s Yellowstone.
The trailer (below) has a sweeping, old-fashioned grandeur and is full of scenic vistas, gunfights, romance, wagon trains, and a clash of civilizations between calvary soldiers and Indigenous people. “There’s no army on this earth that are going to stop those wagons coming,” a character played by Danny Huston warns.
Costner co-wrote, directed and stars in the Horizon series. The first film will be released in theaters June 28, followed by its second chapter just two months later. The second two films haven’t yet been shot. The film has been a 30-year journey for Costner, who even took out a loan on his Santa Barbara home to help finance the picture (Costner notes...

When Kevin Costner revealed the trailer for “Horizon: An American Saga,” the first of his planned four-part epic about the American West, the two-time Academy Award winner looked positively giddy — at least over Zoom.
“Trailers have always been kind of a favorite part for me, even as a boy going to the movies,” Costner said, grinning as he unveiled the first footage in a virtual conversation with journalists. “You’re obviously there to see the movie you want, but isn’t it kind of cool when you see what’s coming? … And with that in mind, I did my very best to expose what’s going to be a four-part saga.”
“Horizon” chapters 1 and 2 will have a dual theatrical release from Warner Bros., with the first film hitting theaters on June 28 and the second debuting August 16. Costner’s goal in crafting the trailer was to find the moments in the...

Kevin Costner has a new movie passion project, and it’s set to shoot at the start of 2025: more on the film here.
Busy, busy times in the filmmaking life of Kevin Costner. After taking several years away from the big screen to pursue the TV series Yellowstone – with the exception of impressive big screen thriller Let Him Go in 2020 – he’s now got several movies on the go.
Two of them are already shot: the opening two parts of the planned four movie western saga Horizon. Whilst we don’t have UK release details, the two Horizon: An American Saga films that are pretty much completed will be released this summer. The plan is for four films, but as was revealed a few weeks ago, the funding isn’t quite in place for films three and four.
Kevin Costner has co-written the films. He also directs and stars.

Despite no longer being a part of Yellowstone’s next season, Kevin Costner seems to be busier than ever. First up, he’s got a two-part Western epic called Horizon: An American Saga that’s coming out this summer, and now, Deadline is reporting that the actor’s got another “longtime passion project” ready to roll. While there are no specifics on what it may be, Costner is set to produce and star in the untitled film, with the director of his 2016 thriller Criminal, Ariel Vromen, at the helm.
In the article, no specifics are given, although Costner has been open about certain long-planned projects in the past. One is his book, The Explorer’s Guild, which he wrote with his Horizon collaborator Jon Baird and was called an Indiana Jones-style globetrotting adventure. It could be anything, although given Vromen’s track record, which includes based-on-fact thrillers, The Iceman (with...

Exclusive: After mounting the two-part Civil War epic Horizon: An American Saga for Warner Bros and New Line, Academy Award winner Kevin Costner has selected his next film to produce and star in, that being an as-yet-untitled picture that Ariel Vromen will direct from a script owned by the actor.
“I could not be more honored to be reunited with my friend and collaborator,” said Vromen in a statement to Deadline, “especially on Kevin’s longtime passion project.”
Pic’s plot is under wraps and further details are scarce, but production is expected to kick off in early 2025. This will be Costner and Vromen’s second film together, on the heels of the 2016 action thriller Criminal co-starring Gary Oldman and Tommy Lee Jones. News of the project comes as Vromen awaits the release of his latest, 1992 — a drama on the 1992 Los Angeles riots, starring Tyrese Gibson, Scott Eastwood and the late Ray Liotta,...

With the Super Bowl taking place this Sunday, it’s an opportunity for the studios to give viewers their first looks at some of the hottest movies coming to theaters this summer and fall.
It’s a good time for it, too, as viewership for the big game is up with a 20% surge in sponsorships and a marked increase in young women tuning into NFL games thanks to Taylor Swift.
The studios could see this as an opportunity to help combat a box office slump. But what trailers could we specifically see?
None of the major studios were forthcoming with what they’ll be revealing come Super Bowl Sunday, but some inferences can be made based on what the release date calendar looks like over the next few months. Sources tell TheWrap Paramount is expected to drop additional spots for their Kingsley Ben-Adair-starring Bob Marley biopic, “Bob Marley: One Love,...

Yellowstone‘s future continues to be uncertain as a new report surrounding the upcoming spinoff hints at trouble behind the scenes when it comes to salary and legacy stars Cole Hauser, Kelly Reilly, and Luke Grimes. In a newsletter from Puck, it’s being revealed that there’s been a months-long back-and-forth over whether the trio will return for the upcoming series when Yellowstone wraps its second half of Season 5 later this year. This salary debate comes on the heels of Yellowstone lead Kevin Costner‘s dispute with showrunner Taylor Sheridan, in which he complained that script delays were impeding on the production schedule of his two-part Western epic Horizon. (Credit: Paramount Network) Ultimately, Sheridan wrote Costner out of the second half of Yellowstone‘s fifth and final season. While it’s unclear if anything has changed since then, it’s being reported that Hauser, Reilly, and Grimes are seeking...

Kevin Costner’s Horizon is set to be a four film saga on the big screen – but half-way through, it’s proving to be a challenge to get Horizon 3 and 4 moving.
Already regarded as one of the biggest risks in cinema this year, the Horizon saga is Kevin Costner’s big-screen return to both directing and to westerns.
He’s independently put together what’s planned as a four-film tale. Parts one and two are pretty much done, and will be released in cinemas – in the US at least – this summer. We don’t have news on a UK distributor as of yet, but believe me, I’m looking.
Had all gone to plan, then Kevin Costner – who’s co-writing, starring and directing the films – would have shot Horizon movies three and four last year. However, the strike by actors in Hollywood put a dampener on those plans, and a...
