If you were anywhere in or around the United Kingdom during the last stretch of the noughties–or anywhere else with easy access to Channel 4’s streaming platform, for that matter–chances are you witnessed the pandemonium stirred up by a cult TV comedy series, The Inbetweeners. From the minds of creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris came a show that chronicled the banter, mess, joys, and sorrows of four high school students stranded in an unidentified stretch of British suburbia–an endlessly watchable, endlessly quotable sitcom that later birthed two spinoff features and crystallized the show’s acting quartet as household names.
I am sitting in the lounge room of Locarno’s Belvedere Hotel waiting to interview one of them, actor-turned-director Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners’ put-upon Will McKenzie), moments before the Locarno Film Festival will draw the curtains on his Days of the Bagnold Summer. This is not...

As Spider-Man: Far From Home and Midsommar bring the well-worn trip-gone-wrong back to the big screen, here are 20 of film’s most appalling vacations
The sequel to the film of the sitcom, The Inbetweeners 2 bravely wrestles with the question of which is more revolting, a faceful of someone else’s urine or a faceful of someone else’s faeces. Judging by all the vomiting that Will (Simon Bird) does after he receives the latter, the answer is faeces. But that’s not all the Brits abroad have to put up with in Australia. Neil (Blake Harrison) kills a dolphin, Simon (Joe Thomas) gets beaten up, and when their car runs out of fuel in the fiercely hot outback, it looks – for two whole hours – as if they will all die of dehydration.

Adam Nagaitis, who recently earned rave reviews as the villainous Cornelius Hickey on AMC’s “The Terror,” has joined the ensemble of the HBO limited series “Chernobyl.”
Jessie Buckley, Adrian Rawlins, and Con O’Neill have also joined Stellan Skarsgard, Emily Watson, and Nagaitis’ “Terror” co-star Jared Harris, who had been previously announced.
Production on the series began last month in Lithuania. The show will debut on HBO in the U.S. and on Sky Atlantic in various territories, as well as on their streaming service Now TV.
Penned by Craig Mazin, the five-part miniseries dramatizes the true story of one of the worst man-made catastrophes in history — the April 26, 1986, explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in then-Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic — and follows the brave men and women who sacrificed to save Europe from unimaginable disaster.
The series is produced by Sister Pictures and the Mighty Mint as an HBO/Sky Television co-production.

Final Update, Monday 4:49 Pm Pt: Across the Top 10 major studio releases internationally there’s reason for some holiday cheer. This weekend’s figures are up 19.4% over last frame with The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies leading the pack at $89M, plus strong perfs from Exodus: Gods And Kings in new key markets and the Night At The Museum finale. Still, that result is down from last year, largely due to the impact that Frozen was having on the season with a $50.5M take in the comparable frame. Five Armies in the estimates is also about 9.3% off from Smaug’s performance last year, but there are those nasty currency fluctuations to take into account.
Still, it a big weekend for local titles. Last frame’s Indian release Pk added Bollywood flair to the international box office with an offshore haul of $14.3M for a global cume of $61.46M.

Back in September 2013, Dumb and Dumber fans worldwide were given a reason to be cheerful when the first picture of Harry and Lloyd together again emerged online. After years of rumours and false starts, official confirmation that the Farrelly brothers had called action on their unlikely sequel a full two decades after wrapping the original was a welcome surprise.
As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for.
Dumb and Dumber To made its bow in a number of territories over the last month and opens in UK cinemas this week. A decent $127 million-and-counting thus far doesn’t disguise the fact that the movie has received a critical beatdown, as evidenced by a 27% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience reaction hasn’t been quite so damning, but it’s clear enough that Carrey, Daniels and the Farrellys weren’t able to recapture the magic that made Dumb and Dumber a thoroughly guilty pleasure.

As the festive season approaches its zenith, the diminutive hero takes the top spot ahead of another blockbusting adventure, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1
With a three-day opening of £9.75m, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies achieved the second-biggest weekend of 2014, behind The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (£10.32m plus £2.33m in previews). The Inbetweeners 2 debuted with £12.54m, but that included £4.49m in previews, which means it grossed £8.05m over the actual Friday-to-Sunday period.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year (again), and as usual it’s getting to those last few weeks before the big day when creative ideas and planning make way for frantic grabs at whatever is left on the shelves after the Black Friday zombie hordes have cleared everything out.
But fear not: because the best of Christmas is watching movies, re-watching old TV specials and trying hard to forget that George Lucas ever decided that anyone wanted a Star Wars Christmas show, there’ll always be a helping hand round these parts for those who want it.
So if you’re buying for a difficult brother, a picky sister or just for the film, gaming or TV fan in your life, what follows is a compendium of the finest gift ideas for this year’s festivities, as usual there are massive opportunities to win most of what has been included…...

The Inbetweeners 2 rocketed to the top of the UK Box Office earlier this year, enjoying the biggest opening weekend of the year and achieved the biggest ever opening day for a comedy. To celebrate the film’s release on Steelbook, Blu-ray, DVD and VOD ahead of Christmas we’ve teamed up with Channel 4 to give three lucky WhatCulture.com readers the chance to win a copy of both movies on blu-ray.
In this critically acclaimed and award winning duo of films, The Inbetweeners boys Will, Simon, Jay & Neil go on a ‘lads’ holiday to Malia for two weeks of sun, sea and, who knows, maybe even some sex. Then the guys travel to Australia to meet up with Jay on his mental gap year where there’s singing round the camp fire, disgrace at a water park and a trip into the outback… will they survive?...

★☆☆☆☆The failures of The Inbetweeners 2 (2014) - as with many other films crafted from much-enjoyed television series' - would be easy to chalk down to the impossibility of recapturing the magic of what worked so well on TV into a new and scary medium. But attributing the hit and miss nature of this knowingly crafted sequel to that leap is far too simple an excuse. If the original The Inbetweeners Movie (2011) film merely stank like mouldy socks left in the washing machine too long, the odour emitted by this ill-advised follow-up could probably be likened to the bog of eternal stench that was the communal camping tent known to fans of the series.

Is it December already? 2014 has somehow passed by in a flash. In the world of entertainment, this was the year that brought us selfie saturation, Shia Labeouf's "I'm Not Famous" meltdown and Kim Kardashian's provocative and physics-defying (champagne can't do that!) cover shoot for Paper Magazine.
With the end of the year in sight, we sat down with the stars of The Inbetweeners 2 for a special look back at an event-packed 2014.
See what James Buckley, Simon Bird, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas had to say on some of the biggest headline-making events of the past 12 months above.

The Inbetweeners may have just ruled themselves out as the next One Direction, after singing a unique version of 'Steal My Girl'.
Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas were asked to put their vocal cords to the test during a visit to BBC Radio 1, and they happily obliged.
What started as a (slightly) tuneful performance soon escalated into a fit of laughter and screeching, with DJ Matt Edmondson providing encouragement before finally removing his headphones.
The boys recently admitted that The Inbetweeners will not be returning, now that they have finished promoting the second film.
"There's no third film," Bird said. "This is genuinely our last interview ever. Ever, ever, ever."

The Inbetweeners stars have revealed that they are parting ways now that they have finished promoting the comedy sequel.

The Inbetweeners 2 review: It's knee-deep in hilarity
"There's no third film," Simon Bird told The Sun. "This is genuinely our last interview ever. Ever, ever, ever."
He added: "It had to end at some point."
Joe Thomas quipped that the end of The Inbetweeners was akin to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
"Physically, unfortunately, we're ageing. The body clock is ticking," he commented. "We'll never have another job like this. We're all a bit similar in temperament - and we're all a bit weird.

The quintessentially British duo of Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley made a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful bid to knock the all-American team of Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway from the top of the U.K. box office this weekend. The Imitation Game still managed to score the second-biggest opening weekend for any U.K. movie so far this year behind The Inbetweeners 2, taking $4.2 million from 459 locations. The film also became second-biggest opening ever in Britain for StudioCanal, just behind 2011’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (also starring Cumberbatch, although in a smaller role).

Figure marks second highest spend in five years.
A total of $260m (A$297m) was spent in Australia on the 35 homegrown features that went into production during the 12 months up to June 30 2014, the second highest level of expenditure since 2008/09.
A further $54m (A$62m) was spent abroad across the total slate.
Nearly all these films are yet to be released but local audiences don’t have long to wait.
Paul Fenech’s Fat Pizza Vs Housos releases on Nov 27 (Transmission), Russell Crowe’s directorial debut The Water Diviner (Entertainment One) on Dec 26 and Robert Connolly’s Paper Planes on Jan 15 (Roadshow). But one of the biggest contributors, Alex Proyas’s Gods of Egypt, will not be released until 2016.
Three of the 35 films were co-productions. Only rarely are more than 35 films made in Australia but having three co-productions in the mix is pretty normal. What is not the norm is that all three were with Germany, although production...

Emily Head has said that she didn't expect to return for The Inbetweeners 2.
The actress played Simon's (Joe Thomas) on-off girlfriend Carli in the E4 sitcom and its first feature film in 2011. However, the character did not appear in the sequel released this year.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Emily claimed that she would have loved to have worked with her former colleagues again, but was aware that the likelihood of Carli's return was slim.
She said: "I still haven't seen it - I feel awful! I couldn't make it to the premiere, and then auditions and rehearsals have got in the way. I really do want to see it - I'm a big fan of the writers and the boys.

By Christmas at least six Hollywood films will have been released this year on DVD and VoD roughly 90 days after their theatrical premieres, a departure from the traditional 120-day holdback.
Home entertainment retailers and digital platforms believe a further relaxation of release windows is inevitable.

The hugely successful The Inbetweeners 2 will be getting its disc release in December, it's been revealed...
Taking sizeable amounts of cash at the UK box office over the summer was the really well received The Inbetweeners 2. Banking well over £30m at the UK box office, it hasn't quite reached the phenomenal takings of its forerunner, but it's not too far behind. Furthermore, it's second only to The Lego Movie at the UK box office this year, beating every summer blockbuster on its way there.
And more money awaits the film when it arrives on DVD and Blu-ray. We've learned when that will be too, as it looks like The Inbetweeners 2 will arrive on DVD and Blu-ray on December 1st 2014.
The early listing for the DVD includes a pair of commentary tracks (one from writer/directors Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, the other from the four leads), as...

2014 has overall been a pretty good year for movies, with some fantastic Oscar contenders (and winners) released back in January and February, not to mention a summer packed full of great blockbusters and superb low-budget Indie movies like Jon Favreau’s Chef and comedies such as The Inbetweeners 2.
Superhero movies have dominated though, with Captain America, the X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy all keeping fans and regular moviegoers alike happy. The next one won’t be released until 2015 with Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, and there are still plenty of other big movies to look forward to in the rest of 2014.

Woody Allen.s Magic in the Moonlight opened in sixth spot in a generally weak trading session at Australian cinemas last weekend, way below Blue Jasmine.s debut last year.
The South of France-set comedy starring Colin Firth, Emma Stone, Eileen Atkins and Jacki Weaver whistled up $762,000 at 131 screens, and $826,000 with previews, no match for Blue Jasmine.s $1.07 million debut on 128.
Of course Woody.s latest opus lacks two things that Blue Jasmine had going for it: Cate Blanchett, and reviews that were far more effusive (91% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes vs 48% for Magic).
Jasmine ended up with $6.4 million, a remarkably high 6-to-1 multiple of the opening weekend, a feat which is unlikely to be repeated by Firth.s conjuror and Stone.s self-styled psychic.
Nationwide takings dropped by 22% to $9.6 million, according to Rentrak.s estimates, as only four films earned more than $1 million.

Scarlett Johansson's Lucy has ended The Inbetweeners 2's run at the top of the UK box office.
The Luc Besson-directed action movie earned more than £3 million over the Bank Holiday weekend to secure first place ahead of the comedy sequel and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

The latter, which marked Peter Capaldi's first full outing as The Doctor, earned an impressive £522,908 from its cinema screenings. However, the total is still some way off the £1.7 million opening haul for last year's 50th anniversary special 'The Day of the Doctor'.

2. (1) The Inbetweeners 2 - £2,366,161

With the Doctor Who series 8 opener coming to cinemas tomorrow night, Mark asks whether more TV could be screened as cinematic events...
If you're a Doctor Who fan lucky enough to see 50th anniversary episode The Day Of The Doctor in a cinema last November, you probably saw it the way it was meant to be seen. With a giant “Woo” moment coming approximately every ten minutes, it has the air of a story that is too big for your living room. It may still have been a feature-length episode, but it's one that was meant to be watched surrounded by other fans.
That one worked out pretty well for BBC Worldwide - the special screenings took £6m globally in its opening weekend. That's not bad considering it only showed on Saturday evening and Sunday morning in most cinemas. Having proven a viable strategy, the BBC are doing the same...

So apparently summer's over for another year - but there's no need to stand outside brooding in the wet weather like a moody, mercurial TV anti-hero!
Come indoors, settle down in front of the telly and watch some cracking shows - the Tube Talk Q&A is back with all the latest scoop on when and where you can expect to see your favourite TV programmes.
Have any of the new season shows been picked up yet? Digital Spy used to have a planner which highlighted what had been picked up and by whom.
...and now we do again!
Yes, the Us TV Acquisitions scorecard is back and revamped for the 2014-15 television season. It's early days, so the whole thing's pretty much a sea of red right now, but that'll change as more and more UK channels announce which fresh Yank hits they'll be airing.
For the record, right...

The Inbetweeners cast were pictured posing awkwardly with livestock while being taught how to shear sheep as part of the Royal Queensland Show in Australia today (August 13).
The stars of the comedy sequel, which earned more than £12.5 million across the UK during its first weekend, made special guest appearances at the annual agricultural show during their visit to the Rna Showgrounds in Brisbane.
Blake Harrison, Simon Bird, James Buckley and Joe Thomas all wore plaid shirts under blue overalls at the Ekka event and chatted with the Premier of Queensland, Campbell Newman.
Harrison, who stars as the slightly gormless Neil in the TV-to-film spinoff, really got stuck in and smiled for photographers as he completed his shearing.
The Inbetweeners 2 reunites the boys on a holiday during Jay's (Buckley) gap year to Australia. The movie also stars Emily Berrington and Freddie Stroma.

Marvel soared while Adam Sandler floundered. Simon takes a closer look at the winners and losers of 2014's summer blockbuster season...
As another summer blockbuster season comes to an end, here's our annual reflection on what worked, what didn't, and who was left with egg on their face.
It's been a surprisingly strong summer season, in truth. Sure, there've been a few misses here and there, but we've found much to enjoy in many of the season's big releases, both in terms of widescreen spectacle and thought-provoking ideas.
So as the summer of 2014 winds to a close, here's what we took out of it...
Marvel
Taking its usual place in the 'winners' section of articles like these is Marvel Studios, which opened and closed summer blockbuster movie season this year with considerable style.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier garnered strong reviews, and comfortably outperformed its predecessor at the box office.
