In the 11 years since it burst onto the scene, A24 has accomplished something virtually unheard of in the film industry: establishing itself as a distributor with a fanbase that rivals those of the biggest directors.
Through a carefully curated lineup of acquisitions and original projects (and some seriously impressive marketing strategy), the company has become synonymous with crowd-pleasing independent filmmaking executed at the highest possible level. And its effortlessly cool promotional campaigns and brand collaborations have turned its logo into the ultimate stamp of approval for any project seeking film geek street cred.
The brand is elastic enough to be applied to a wide variety of projects — this is the company that released both “Moonlight” and “Spring Breakers,” after all — but you can generally recognize an A24 movie when you see one. It’s always going to be an auteur-driven work that unapologetically swerves away from mainstream trends in favor...

In 1979, Fleetwood Mac released Tusk, an experimental album that was a stark departure from Rumours. The album was not as commercially successful as its predecessor and, while critics liked it, they didn’t think it stacked up to the band’s 1977 magnum opus. Still, it drew some comparisons to The Beatles. Some critics didn’t use the comparison as a compliment, though.
Critics compared a ‘Fleetwood Mac’ album to The Beatles
The stormy dynamic that hung heavy over the Rumours recording sessions followed Fleetwood Mac into the studio as they worked on Tusk. Lindsey Buckingham seized creative control and his bandmate’s songs didn’t fit all that snugly into his vision. As a result, the album sounded like a mismatched collection of songs instead of a cohesive whole. This quality, some critics said, evoked The Beatles’ White Album.

Psych rockers Pond are back to announce their 10th album, Stung!, arriving on June 21st via Spinning Top Records.
Stung! may be Pond’s 10th album since their ramshackle 2009 debut Psychedelic Mango, but it is their first double album. Comprised of 14 tracks, the Australian band names Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk and Prince’s Sign o’ the Times as influences on Stung!, and the album promises Pond at their most unfettered and expansive. They previously previewed Stung! with the album’s first single, “Neon River,” back in January, which featured the band’s typical hallmarks: majestic melodies, fuzzy guitars, and unbridled enthusiasm.
For the next offering from Stung!, the band have shared the album’s title track, “(I’m) Stung.” With sunny acoustic guitar strums and an impassioned performance from frontman Nick Allbrook, “(I’m) Stung” is warm and whimsical. Allbrook narrates the consuming feeling of having a crush on someone...

While the Marvel Universe continues to chug along and James Gunn attempts to resuscitate the DC universe into something worth watching, we will yet again go back to the world of graphic novels for our inspiration on book vs movie. It’s really a very untapped realm as there are so many good horror comics out there, many without adaptations yet. The ones that have been adapted are very fun and interesting. Today is the mostly forgotten early 2000s movie From Hell (watch it Here), which is based on the stunning and epic graphic novel from famed wizard and all-around cranky dude Alan Moore. Like many graphic novels, the journey to page and then screen was a long and arduous one. It is based on the very real killings in Whitechapel that were later attributed to Jack the Ripper. While both have a lot of truths to them along with...

Indie film studio and distribution company Good Deed Entertainment (Gde) has announced this week that they have wrapped production on their inaugural original production, the horror trilogy Fresh Hell. Just completed, the three feature-length films in the series are eyeing a summer 2024 release via Gde’s horror vertical Cranked Up Films.
Fresh Hell is a three-feature film anthology series from writer/director Quinn Armstrong; the films are titled Dead Teenagers, The Exorcism of Saint Patrick, and Wolves Against the World, each different film said to be “linked by time and space.”
“The first horror movie I ever remember watching was Creepshow and I still think that horror anthologies are the backbone of the genre,” says Armstrong. “It’s been such a pleasure to work in the tradition of horror anthologies to create Fresh Hell, an anthology of features with a modern twist.”

The concept of the Kevin Smith horror movie Tusk came out of an episode of Smith’s SModcast podcast in which he and his co-host Scott Mosier started out joking about the idea of a walrus-themed body horror movie and then, in the midst of the banter, Smith was inspired to actually make the movie. (And I’m very thankful that he did.) Smith’s horror anthology KillRoy Was Here started out in a similar way. It has its roots in an episode of the Edumacation podcast, where Smith and co-host Andy McElfresh “accidentally brainstormed a Christmas horror anthology” that would revolve around the child-eating creature known as Krampus. Smith and McElfresh wrote a script and were moving ahead with the film, which was first called Comes the Krampus! and then re-titled Anti-Claus, but then it got abandoned when Michael Dougherty’s Krampus movie was released. It only sat dormant...

From man-eating beds to serial-killing gingerbread cookies, there’s no shortage of absurd premises in the horror genre. However, not all of these weird movies are created equal, and I’d argue that a silly premise is only half the battle when crafting a legitimately entertaining piece of absurdist genre cinema. Personally, I think that the very best of these strange projects succeed because they take an utterly ridiculous concept and play it completely straight, often revealing unexpected terrors as filmmakers show us worlds where tumors can go homicidal and mad scientists can stitch people into human centipedes.
One of my favorite examples of this kind of cinematic absurdity done right is Kevin Smith’s controversial horror-comedy Tusk, a divisive feature that’s almost equally loved and hated by the horror community. And with the flick currently celebrating its 10th anniversary, I thought that this might be a great time...

Amazon MGM has announced (via Deadline) that they will be giving the thriller Pussy Island a global theatrical release on August 23rd – but, to the shock and surprise of no one, they’re not actually going to be releasing the film under the title Pussy Island. The feature directorial debut of Zoë Kravitz (who played Catwoman in The Batman), the thriller is now going by the title Blink Twice. By giving the film a more public-friendly title, they’ve just saved some members of the public from having to protest the fact that a movie called Pussy Island is showing at their local theatre.

Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” leads the feature film field with seven nominations. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is the top animated contender with seven nominations and 24-time Emmy-nominated drama “The Last of Us” leads the episodic field with six nominations.
“The artistry, ingenuity and passion of visual effects practitioners around the world have come together to create remarkable imagery,” Ves chair Kim Davidson said. “We are seeing best-in-class work that elevates the art of storytelling and exemplifies the spirit of innovation. A24 has a reputation as one of the coolest indie movie “brands” today.
Through dozens of films, they have established themselves as arbiters of extremely good taste, maintaining relationships with their favorite filmmakers while taking big swings on new talent. They have also shown themselves to be crack marketers of their own product (how many boutique film studios inspire young fans to sweat sweatshirts emblazoned with their logo?)
This brand awareness is quite powerful. Younger filmgoers know an A24 movie when they see them; and they go see movies because the studio is behind them. This knowingness, a contract between the studio and the audience, extends to A24’s horror output, which is even more easily identifiable. “It’s an A24 horror movie,” you’ll say. And whoever you’re talking to will know exactly what you mean. Maybe it’s a little folksy, maybe it’s a little techy,...

A24 has confirmed that they’re re-teaming with Halina Reijn, the director of their slasher satire Bodies Bodies Bodies, on a erotic thriller called Babygirl – and an impressive cast has already been assembled for the film. Here’s the line-up: Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos), Antonio Banderas (Desperado), Harris Dickinson (The Iron Claw), Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), and Jean Reno (Léon: The Professional).
According to Deadline, Reijn will be working from a screenplay she wrote herself. The story she crafted for this one centers on a successful CEO who begins an illicit affair with her much younger intern. Given the “thriller” part of the “erotic thriller” description, we have to assume that this affair goes terribly wrong in some way… probably in a way that involves more than just hurt feelings.

"Tusk" was a theatrical experience that I will never forget. The trailer did not give much away, and it was difficult to tell whether Kevin Smith was aiming for parody or serious horror. Was this really about someone being held captive by a seaman with an affinity for walruses? The idea for "Tusk" began with a SModcast episode where Smith and his friend/producer Scott Mosier poked fun at a classified advertisement made by a homeowner who offered free lodging to someone if they dressed as a walrus for two hours a day. The strange, real-life story inspired a brainstorming session about how they might bring the story to life on film.
"I could have easily just been like, 'Oh, that was a stupid stoner idea that I won't follow through on,' but, I don't know, there seemed to be a lot of nobility in taking a stoner idea...

Back in 2017, BuzzFeed writer Adam Ellis wrote out a ghost story (which he swears is completely true) on Twitter, and that story caught so much attention that there was soon talk of a movie adaptation. The project, titled Dear David, was first set up at New Line Cinema in 2018, then made its way over to Lionsgate. Now Lionsgate is gearing up to give Dear David a theatrical, digital, and VOD release on October 13th – and to promote the release, a clip from the movie has arrived online. The first trailer for "It's A Wonderful Knife" is here, and it has everything we never knew we needed from a holiday-set slasher: Laura Lee from "Yellowjackets," a killer who looks like Moon Knight, and ... Justin Long with a spray tan?! Long's involvement in the movie — playing chipper Mayor Waters — should make it a must-see anyway given his wild and watchable horror track record, but there are plenty of reasons to get stoked for "It's A Wonderful Knife."
The movie is the latest from "Freaky" writer Michael Kennedy, with "Tragedy Girls" filmmaker Tyler MacIntyre directing. That means "It's A Wonderful Knife" is almost certain to have a sharp comedic edge to it, something that's clear from the first seconds of the trailer when Mayor Waters, looking and sounding weirdly like a Martin Short character, campily declares, "I give you ... One of the many shameful losses during the (not so) great Disney+ purge of 2023 was "Just Beyond," the anthology series based on R.L. Stine's graphic novel property of the same name. Created by Seth Grahame-Smith ("Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter"), the genre-blending show is probably the closest anyone's come to creating a worthy tween-friendly successor to "The Twilight Zone," complete with its dark satire and profound mediation on topics such as love, loss, and mortality.
"Just Beyond" might have also made for a nice companion piece to the streamer's incoming "Goosebumps," itself the latest screen adaptation of Stine's mega-popular "spoopy" book series. Having previously been adapted as a live-action TV series that ran from 1995 to 1998, the property made the leap to the big screen with the 2015 "Goosebumps" film, which was followed by a sequel three years later.

“Talk to Me” has horror fans talking… about how much it scared them and of a certain scene that reminded them of a pivotal moment in another A24 movie, “Hereditary.”
The debut film from Australian directors Danny and Michael Philippou is about a group of friends who discover they can conjure spirits by using an embalmed hand. Their favorite new pastime, unfortunately, also unleashes terrifying supernatural forces.
TheWrap’s critic Tomris Laffly called it “an honest-to-god horror movie with genuine scares” in her review. It currently has a 94% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

A24 is having a moment right now. For starters, the indie studio and 21st century tastemaker is actually able to produce movies during the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes due to its separation from the major Hollywood studios. So bring on that movie where Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega are responsible for killing a unicorn! More impressive though, A24 just picked up its second Best Picture Oscar in six years, and for a movie that walked away with a staggering seven Oscar wins overall in March.
Not bad for a company that’s barely a decade old, and which is still generally regarded in the zeitgeist for putting out strange, and yet often entrancing work. That, indeed, could be used to describe most of their horror output, which has had a bigger hand in shaping the genre in the 2010s than any other studio or production company not named Blumhouse. Part of the reason why Fleetwood Mac broke up was because many of the band were romantically involved, and none of those relationships worked out. After Stevie Nicks split with longtime partner Lindsey Buckingham, she was involved in a brief affair with drummer Mick Fleetwood. Their relationship only lasted a few years, but it did lead to a few new songs from Nicks. Here are three songs Nicks wrote about Fleetwood.
Stevie Nicks expressed regret toward her affair with Mick Fleetwood in ‘Storms’
Nicks and Fleetwood started their affair in 1977 while on the Rumours tour in Australia. At the time, both were in relationships. Fleetwood was married to Jenny Boyd, sister of Pattied Boyd, and Nicks was dating the Eagles’ Don Henley. Fleetwood and Boyd got divorced in 1978 after he started his affair with Nicks.

In 1979, Fleetwood Mac released Tusk, and, in the album’s aftermath, Christine McVie said Mick Fleetwood sank to the lowest point of his life. The band’s drummer had served as the glue holding them together for years. By the early 1980s, though, his personal life was as plagued with problems as the band’s dynamic had been in the Rumours era. McVie explained that his problems appeared to shrink him.
Christine McVie said Mick Fleetwood struggled in the time after ‘Tusk’
Fleetwood’s problems began after the Tusk tour. He had been serving as the band’s manager, but exorbitant spending on the tour left the group with significantly less money than they expected. As a result, his bandmates fired him from the position.
From there, Fleetwood made a series of questionable financial decisions. He bought a home in Los Angeles and a 1000-acre farm in Australia. Eventually, he declared bankruptcy.

Kevin Smith has detailed his latest health scare, revealing that earlier this year, he suffered a “complete break from reality”–and no, he’s not talking about writing a fourth Clerks.
On his mental health, Kevin Smith told People that he had a breakdown in January, even hinting at some seriously dark thoughts that went through his mind. “At that moment, I wouldn’t have been averse to not being around any longer. I called a friend and said, ‘I’m in a weird, dark place. I need to go somewhere and get help.’”
As a result, Kevin Smith checked himself into a treatment center to get professional help for his health. He also reflected on his time attending therapy sessions, although he initially felt a bit guilty since he was in a group that included people suffering from Ptsd. “In the beginning, it was tough to share when somebody...

Lindsey Buckingham is known for his longtime role in the rock band Fleetwood Mac, but his history with the band has had plenty of ups and downs. According to him, Stevie Nicks had a hand in his 2018 ousting from the group.

Talk to Me went over so well with festival audiences (it has been said that even the likes of Steven Spielberg and Jordan Peele have watched and loved the film), a bidding war was launched over the distribution rights. The end of Robert Zemeckis' 1994 mega-hit "Forrest Gump" saw the titular character, played by Tom Hanks, presented with a young son he didn't know he had. Forrest — "not a smart man" as he says — had spent the bulk of the film attempting to declare his love for his childhood sweetheart Jenny (Robin Wright), who was often kept out of his life by their differing circumstances. He went off to war, she went off to protest. Forrest was finally able to state his love out loud when they found themselves in each other's company again as adults. A few years thereafter, after yet another separation, Jenny returned again, this time with six-year-old Forrest Jr. The film ends with Forrest and his son living together. Jenny, sadly, dies from complications with AIDS.

Fleetwood Mac toiled for a decade before they achieved massive success by adding Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham to the lineup. The duo provided the spark that helped the band explode in popularity. Twenty-five Fleetwood Mac songs landed on the Billboard singles chart, including nine in the top 10. Continuing without Christine McVie seems unlikely, according to Mick Fleetwood, so those nine tunes, including Fleetwood Mac’s only No. 1 hit, could be their only top-10 songs. Let’s look at how they stack up.

Wallace the Walrus
February has truly been a ride as Trace and I venture through the wilds of Weird Sex Month. After spending the last few weeks of January buried in films of the 2000-2010s with remake House of Wax (2005) and Crimson Peak (2015), February has been dedicated to the early 1980s with Videodrome (1983) and Possession (1981).
Now we’re up to 2014’s Tusk, Kevin Smith‘s second foray into horror. The film stars Justin Long as Wallace, a d-bag podcaster who travels to Canada to mock a boy who cut off his leg on the internet. When the story falls through, Wallace travels to a remote mansion to meet with Howard Howe (Michael Parks), a recluse with plenty of stories and…odd interests.

Well Schmoes, as 2022 finally draws to a close we reflect on a year unlike any other in our lifetimes. We finally got back to a pretty normal theatrical schedule from the studios, but streaming still had a lot t offer as well. If there is one thing for sure, there are always movies that are highly overrated and underrated by critics and fans alike. As the UnPopular Opinion Guy, I felt it was only fitting to issue my list of the movies I felt that the masses got wrong. Some of these may shock you and some may just piss you off, but these are my honest-to-goodness perspective of the movies of 2022. If you disagree with any of the choices, please voice your own opinion in the comments below. After all, the only opinion that really matters is yours, and I am just here to share mine.
