Test preparation
Of the Mane 6 one of the most interesting and easily identifiable of the six is Rainbow Dash, whether funny or going through turmoil. Have loved in previous episodes and since how 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' developed Twilight, showing complex struggles and how she deals with them. To me, the episodes involving the Wonderbolt Academy are a bit hit and miss and how the respective episode characterises the included Wonderbolt characters plays a big factor in this.
"Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3" is one of Rainbow Dash's best episodes in a while and one of the episodes with her as the main focus that did so well in making the viewer identify with her and her situation. As far as the Wonderbolt Academy-oriented episodes go, "Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3" is one of the best with no annoying or missed opportunity characters to worry about, as well as one of the most interesting. It is a great episode and one of the best of Season 4, a huge improvement over the underwhelming previous episode "Leap of Faith".
My only (minor) gripe is Pinkie Pie's rap. Some will love it, some won't. Personally am about 50/50. It is quite entertaining with some clever lyric writing but it didn't feel like it fitted with everything else (so it was the placement not the rap itself) and didn't seem completely relevant and doesn't say enough that was illuminating. My view of course.
Rainbow Dash however is so well fleshed out and her and her predicament were so easy to relate to as somebody who's been in similar situations myself (though musically rather than sport-related). Twilight is also beautifully realised and is so caring and helpful while also amusing, their character interaction throughout is a sheer delight. All the ponies are in character and all have a chance to shine in some way or other, Applejack was not this funny all season. The character interaction between all the characters (but especially between Rainbow Dash and Twilight) is beautifully done. The voice acting is terrific, with Tara Strong and Ashleigh Ball as Rainbow Dash really delivering on every emotion as humanly possible.
For me, "Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3" was one of the best written episodes of Season 4. The comedy in the first half is especially brilliant, the comedy is plentiful and this is another episode where all of it works. The best of it is hilarious, and it is one of very few 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' episodes where any "who" jokes did not grate on me. The episode does deliver just as much on the emotion, which is genuinely powerful and did bring tears to my eyes in the darker second half. The moral is so true to life and one of the most honest and hit home with me ones of Season 4.
Story is not one of the show's most creative but it is still lots of fun, very charming and very heart-warming with real emotional impact. The conflict and scenario are so relatable and powerfully done, personally thought the middle act's pacing was fine. The Wonderbolts history was fascinating and one learns a lot from it. The animation is great, especially those golden facial expressions. Particularly Rarity's reactions. The music is both infectious and fitting with the atmosphere.
In conclusion, great. 9/10
