Elena Michaels : Here.
[hands him a packet of ice, which he tosses into bin, she sighs, sits down on bed]
Elena Michaels : I didn't know how to explain everything without hurting you. So I lied. You are the kindest man that I have ever met, and I didn't wanna bring the... turmoil of my past into your life.
Philip McAdams : What about him? Were you with him when we met?
Elena Michaels : No. I wouldn't do that. I'd left months before. The day that I met you, Philip, everything changed for me. I... I realized that you... everything that you are, your sisters, Becky, Diane, the... God, the calmness here, that's what I needed. That's what I wanted.
Philip McAdams : Do you still want it?
Elena Michaels : More than anything.
[he moves towards her]
Elena Michaels : But I'm scared that I can't have it, because I can't shake my past.
[he sits down next to her]
Elena Michaels : It's part of who I am, and I need you to accept that.
Philip McAdams : What about him?
Elena Michaels : There are worse people than Victor Olson out there, and they're looking to hurt me. That's why Clay is here, no other reason.
Philip McAdams : What people? Why?
Elena Michaels : I can't tell you.
Philip McAdams : Call the police.
Elena Michaels : I can't.
Philip McAdams : [rises] What do you mean you can't call the police? What have you done?
Elena Michaels : [trying to find favor with him] This is me trying to protect you. The less you know, the better.
Philip McAdams : I don't believe this. This is too goddamn crazy!
Elena Michaels : I know. I just need you to believe me, Philip, please.
Philip McAdams : I need a minute.
[Elena turns, sits down uncertainly on the bed, sighing]
Philip McAdams : Alone.
[she leaves]

Elena Michaels : You waited for me long after most men would have given up. You don't have to say anything.
Philip McAdams : I sat in here thinking about how much I know about you. I know you always close your eyes and listen when it rains. How you cry at happy endings more than sad ones.
[sits down next to her]
Philip McAdams : And when we sit together, and you tuck your hair behind your ear, I know you're gonna rest your head on my shoulder. I realized... I only know... the small things... the tiny moments... and I thought they were enough. But there's so much I don't know about you.
Elena Michaels : [lowers her face] I'm sorry, Philip.
Philip McAdams : I also realized that I wanna spend the rest of my life getting to know you. I can leave all this behind. We can move to London, to New York, to Los Angeles, I don't care. Nobody has to know where we are.
Elena Michaels : [grasping for words] You can't... You'd never see your family again.
Philip McAdams : So be it. I'm in love with you, the one in those tiny moments, and there's nothing you can tell me that would change that.
[gets up, then kneels in front of her]
Philip McAdams : I want you to marry me.
Elena Michaels : [lowers head down to kiss him] I love you, too.
[he smiles]
Elena Michaels : But I can't give you an answer, not now.
[rushes off]
