Neal meets Hagen at a museum. Hagen says he wants to steal something there and Neal is going to do it for him. He wants the Mosconi Codex, a book which is kept on pressure-sensitive plates. Specifically he wants Chapter 13.
Neal inquires about the book with one of the employees and learns that nobody is allowed to study it. Mosconi said the greatest wealth of the world was in its pages. But the owner donated it with specific instructions that it not be opened.
Peter stops by in his town car and tells Neal about some of the perks of his new job. He and Elizabeth are going to a Yankees game in the owner's box. He also says something big is coming up.
Cut to the office and Peter naming Jones to be acting SSA. Afterwards Jones tells Neal there will be a celebration, but Neal has to pass.
Mozzie is working on his new identity. The two discuss stealing the codex. Since Neal and his anklet have already been inside the museum, he needs a reason to go there again. They need to find somebody else to try and steal another item in the museum. Mozzie suggests a "thief of thieves" named Zev. Siegel tells Neal he thinks he'll either make his career or ruin it. And Siegel likes it. They spot Mozzie walking by and Neal convinces Siegel to approach him. The plan seems to be working well until Peter pops into the car and sits in the empty driver's seat. Neal manages to convince Peter he shouldn't be there since they're no longer partners.
Peter leaves and Neal heads into the museum. He goes to work on the codex while Siegel grabs Mozzie's decoy and finds him to be clean. Zev arrives and Mozzie distracts Siegel. Neal is pulled into the Rebecca interview and of course she immediately recognizes Neal. Neal's explanation is that he was vetting her on a hunch that it might be an inside job. It appears to work.
Neal gives Mozzie an update about Rebecca. Mozzie has copied the chapter of the codex for future study. He advises that Neal go out and solve the case as if he hadn't set it up himself.
Neal and Peter arrive at the museum. They walk past the codex and see an employee tell investigators they cannot open the book. They investigate the room where Zev was trapped and he replicates how he got out of the room. He thinks there might be fingerprints and Peter orders the security doors lowered.

Neal brings Hagen his chapter. Hagen tells Neal he'll leave him alone "when I get what I want." Hagen asks Neal not to spoil 'the mystery.' We see that Siegel watched this meeting from his car.
**this synopsis - intentionally or not - does NOT disclose the final two scenes of this episode. Warning: MAJOR revelation/plot twist! But first, to continue -
Neal accompanies Agent Clinton Jones to return the large painting Zev stole to the museum. It is 'rare' for a thief like Neal to see something returned. There, Neal sees Rebecca, who has been fired from her job. It was her stolen ID that gained the thief entrance, and now that the Codex has been removed, as its owner had lost faith in the security of the museum when the painting was stolen, she is no longer needed. Neal tells her he did not lie about anything, even his name, and he seems very sympathetic that he caused this chain of events for her.
Scenes of dark clouds, a storm and rain over NYC -
Neal enters the FBI office to silence and every person there turns to look at him. Peter comes up and escorts him out. They are then shown out in the rain at a crime scene ...
