Storyline
Did you know
- TriviaIchabod references Roanoke Island (NC), the "Lost Colony" . This is an actual place, and the history he tells is based in truth. There was an actual John White who led the colony in 1587, left for supplies, and returned to find it abandoned three years later. What is not revealed in the show is that the colony was actually established a few years earlier, and involved complex relations with two native groups (the Croatoan and the Roanoke). The leader of the Roanoke came to believe his people should resist colonization. The resulting tensions may have contributed to the disappearance of the colonists.
- GoofsIchabod Crane claims that Middle English was the language spoken at the Roanoke Colony. The Roanoke Colony was founded in 1585. Middle English was spoken between 1100 and 1500. After 1500 the language had transitioned to early modern English, which was contemporaneous with Shakespeare and the King James Bible.
- Quotes
Lt. Abbie Mills: You sure you wanna stay in this old cabin? It's a bit of a fixer-upper.
Ichabod Crane: You and I have very different definitions of old. Seems if a building stays upright for more than a decade, people declare it a national landmark.

So That's What Happended to Them...
Sleepy Hollow gives another lesson in twistory (i.e., twisted history) with John Doe. The sudden appearance of a frightening contagion alerts not just Abbie and Crane but local officials. Crane is the key to communication with the young victim and we learn that the Apocalypse could be closer than originally thought. Crane's education, sensitivity, and partnership with Abbie bolster this episode; which is quieter than most but still very effective (just keep ignoring the behavior of law enforcement and everything will be ok).
