“He then suggested that he would do the shot again in the way I suggested, and prints of both this and the way he had done, should be made, and he would check them the next day to see which was better,” he told Bollywood personality and chronicler Shashi Ranjan in an interview.

Leaning full-tilt into its duology structure, Tollywood action drama “Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire” has a winding, often confounding narrative aimed at building up a sequel, but its maximalist action tableaus always yield dividends. After his previous two-parter “K.G.F.” smashed Indian box-office records for Kannada-language films, director Prashanth Neel employs the talents of ultra-charismatic superstar Prabhas (the star of S.S. Rajamouli’s “Baahubali” series) as the silent, stewing protagonist Deva, in a grimy guns-and-gangsters melodrama.
At first, the story plays its cards close to its chest before transforming wildly and suddenly into a mythological epic about secret societies and millennia-old blood feuds. At 174 minutes long, with nested flashbacks overflowing with exposition, the movie has lengthy stretches that can feel like a chore. However, each extraneous segment eventually converges in some of the most exhilarating and cathartic on-screen violence Indian cinema has to offer.

Despite being snubbed for India’s Best International Feature submission, “Rrr” got its well-deserved moment in the Oscar spotlight on Sunday night when M.M. Keeravani’s song “Naatu Naatu” received the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The energetic musical number became a viral hit thanks to the electric duet performance from Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr, and excitement around the song only grew as the film slowly built a following out of streaming audiences from around the globe.
The award marks the culmination of “Rrr” director S.S. Rajamouli’s long working relationship with Keeravani. Speaking to IndieWire, Rajamouli recalled the way that his relationship with his longtime composer made it easy to discuss the narrative context in which the song takes place to deliver a more impactful musical number.

CinemaRajamouli also talked about his views on his father Vijayendra Prasad writing a film glorifying RSS among other political subjects. SS Rajamouli/File PhotoFilmmaker SS Rajamouli has responded to the criticism of Hindu nationalist overtones and casteist, Brahminical narratives in his blockbuster film Rrr in an interview with The New Yorker. Rajamouli also talked about his views on the Bharatiya Janata Party (Bjp), Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), atheism, caste, the impact of rising nationalist sentiments on cinema in India, his father Vijayendra Prasad writing a film glorifying RSS and many other political matters. The interview sets the context by noting that Rajamouli belongs to a dominant caste, the Kamma community. While Rrr has become a massive success beyond the Telugu states and India and won several awards in the United States, it has been criticised for portraying two real-life revolutionary leaders — Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem — with religious and nationalist tones.

‘It came, it saw, it conquered, and continues to conquer’ is a phrase that aptly describes the box office journey of ‘Karthikeya 2’ the latest Tollywood offering to capture the country’s imagination. Starring young actor Nikhil Siddhartha, the Chandoo Mondeti directorial has entered the Rs 100 crore club and shows no signs of flagging anytime soon.
The well-crafted socio-mythological thriller revolving around Lord Krishna and Krishna-tattva or philosophy, has been attracting people to theatres in droves without resorting to the high-blitz promotion campaigns that are the staple of most Bollywood releases.
From a low-key entry in about 50 theatres, ‘Karthikeya 2’ soon spread like wildfire across theatres in Hindi markets. At last count more than 3000 screens were showing the movie even on weekdays.
“It’s the word of mouth that is taking the movie forward. There’s nothing bigger than word of mouth and it went viral and was discussed a lot on social media.

CinemaThe fact that films promoting a certain narrative are becoming money-spinners is a huge encouragement for filmmakers to persist with the trend.Sowmya RajendranAnupam Kher from The Kashmir Files and Ram Charan from Rrrss Rajamouli’s pan-Indian film Rrr is currently minting gold at the box-office. The film, which was released in five Indian languages, is a fictional tale based on real life heroes Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem who fought for adivasi rights and stood up to the might of the British empire. While there is no historical record of the two of them fighting together, the film explores the idea of them meeting and uniting for a cause. Soon after the film hit theatres though, it came under criticism from a section of the audience for casting the two activists in the mould of Hindu mythological characters. In the final sequence, Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan), who...

ReviewThe villain’s dialogue from the film, ‘That speech was more educational than emotional’ just about sums up this preachy attempt. Sowmya RajendranThat Suriya supports several social causes in real life, and is probably the only star of his generation from the Tamil film industry to speak up on political issues consistently, is well known. His public persona has increasingly been reflected in his choice of films. The actor rose to stardom as a romance hero, then cemented his place in the industry with action films, and later turned to social dramas pegged on causes that are perceived to be a discussion point among the audience. The latest in that line-up is Etharkkum Thunindhavan (Et), directed by Pandiraj, and is clearly inspired by the Pollachi sexual assault case of 2019. At the time, Suriya wrote a powerful letter about the case in The Hindu Tamil, which was widely appreciated. Et, however,...

For Mammootty, the film comes as a shot in the arm. It has not only achieved box office success but also critical acclaim — a combination that has often evaded him in recent times. If you’d asked me this question before I stepped in to watch Bheeshma Parvam, I would have said yes. Stop with the gangster storylines, the unnecessary glorification of violence, and the celebration of toxic masculinity already. But having watched the film, I have to confess that I’m grinning ear-to-ear, and would completely enjoy a sequel if it was ever made. Directed by Amal Neerad, known for his extravagant slow motion shots and stylised violence, Bheeshma Parvam also takes generous inspiration from the Mahabharata. Film CommentaryWhen you read these old stories, it becomes apparent why filmmakers are tempted to reinterpret myths through the grey, amoral landscape of the gangster film.Sowmya RajendranThe title is a mouthful — Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana — but when it is about two gods battling it out, the tongue twister seems appropriate. The Kannada film has been making waves in film circles across the country, exciting viewers with its fresh and contemporary take on the Hindu trilogy of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, located within the gangster genre. What if these gods lost their superpowers and descended among us as ordinary humans? Will we still look upon their actions with awe and respect or will we shrivel away from them? Set in smalltown Mangaluru, the film narrates the story of two boys — Hari and Shiva — who meet under unusual circumstances. Hari's single mother is cleaning fish. Her sharp nose picks up another pungent odour.

OpinionWhile the relationship between the guru Rangan Vaathiyaar (Pasupathi) and Kabilan (Arya) is very orthodox, where it breaks the Brahminical mould is how Ranjith retells the story.Balakrishna GaneshanTwo sports drama films – based on almost the same premise and the same sport of boxing – were released on Ott platform Amazon Prime Video recently, thus making this comparison inevitable. While one is the Hindi film Toofan, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, the other one is the Tamil film Sarpatta Parambarai, made by Pa Ranjith. The simple storyline of both the stories is how the protagonist, a boxer, loses form and dramatically achieves success through perseverance and sheer struggle. But the key and obvious difference is the perspectives they are told from. While Toofan is told from a Brahminicial viewpoint, re-perpetuating the casteist orthodox ideas of the guru-shishya relationship that Dronacharya from the mythological story of Mahabharata espoused, the other one seemingly...

Mumbai, March 7 (Ians) The epics Ramayan and Mahabharat seem to be the latest favourites of our filmmakers. A host of new films have been launched, with plots that seem influenced by the epics. Not only Bollywood, South Indian film artistes also seem intrigued by the epics lately.
The fetish for Ramayan, particularly, has been seen in Bollywood in the past, too. Sooraj Barjatya's 1999 hit Hum Saath-Saath Hain and Karan Johar's Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) are automatic recalls when you think of epic inspiration by way of theme in Bollywood.
These earlier films, though, primarily drew drama quotients from the epics. The upcoming roster promises to explore the stories with bigger production values, to say the least.
Here's a look at what's in store:
Ram Setu
Actor-producer Akshay Kumar has carved his space with patriotism and socially relevant commentary through mainstream films lately. With Abhishek Sharma's Ram Setu, he is falling back on mythology.

Broadly, here are the top three trends that one can spot in the report:
