This film spanned 4 years of time in the making. Parts of the film began filming as early as January 2010 to as late as August 2013. The film's editing was not completed until February 2014. It was released two months later. The film was released on iTunes and Amazon in late 2015. It was then released on Netflix worldwide in August of 2016.
The filmmakers did in fact intend to have the film center around four girls stories not just three. A forth girl's story was shot but before beginning of the editing process of the film it was realized the film would be too long and that ultimately the three girl's stories that are in the final film would play better together without the fourth story. The additional story has still never been edited/completed for release as a short film due to lack of budget to complete the project.
There is a shorter version of the film titled "Finding Home: Sophorn's Story" that only tells one of the three girls stories that is in the film. It is about 45 minutes long. This cut was created to help show the film at events that would not be able to play the almost 2 hour long full length film.
The film's funding came mostly through being funded by Kickstarter.
