In 1982, anthropologist Wade Davis traveled to Haiti on a mission: to investigate documented cases of zombiism, specifically cases of people who had been declared dead but who then miraculously came back to life. Davis immersed himself in the very real world of Haitian voodoo, witnessing an array of unbelievable rituals and fascinating rites, prompting him to write the book The Serpent and the Rainbow, which would go on to become a bestseller. Referred to in certain circles as a sort of real life Indiana Jones, Davis’ profile rose and, of course, Hollywood came calling, hoping his tales of voodoo and mystery might translate into a spectacular big screen adventure. Davis was wary of Hollywood and worried the adaptation of his book would bastardize his accounts, but hoped if the right people were involved, his story would be given a respectable treatment. As is often the case in the City of Angels,...

Intro
Dolls, dolls, and more dolls! The horror genre is an ever-twisting blade that goes in deep when a good, and original concept is copied, replicated, and beaten over the head until it’s nothing more than a watered-down caricature. They say imitation is the biggest form of flattery, but are we so sure about that? Today I have an interesting Horror Movie Rip-off between two evil entities covered in rubber that cherish their higher gods and massacring anyone and everyone in their path. One that spawned countless sequels, tv shows, a cemented horror legacy, and worldwide notoriety, while the other I may have glanced at on the racks of my local blockbuster back in the day.

“Don’t let them bury me, I’m not dead!”
When we think of zombies, it’s only natural to first go right into everyone’s favorite flesh-eating ghouls that were popularized by George Romero in his genre classic Night of the Living Dead. But the idea of zombies has been around much longer and is actually steeped in fact. Haitian voodoo has claimed to create zombies for hundreds of years and in film, these were represented in some of our earliest horror movies. White Zombie and I Walked with a Zombie are two of the more famous ones, but the entire sub-genre has some fascinating watches. Horror legend Wes Craven brought a return to Voodoo...

You’ve already made it big by being the number one musical artist, moving ahead where does Badshah see himself?
Talking to Ians, Badshah, who has even collaborated with “Prince of Reggaeton” J. Balvin with the song ‘Voodoo’, said: “Adding Madness to people’s life. I always love shocking people.”
“Right when you think, this is it and you just raise the bar. That’s what I love and that’s what I’m always looking towards.”
Too much swag is synonymous to Badshah, whose real name is Aditya Prateek Singh Sisodia.
Does it ever get tiring to put up an act?
“I have to be really convinced before putting a song out. That is why, even if it is tiring, I put all my energy and creativity into it. And before every show, I always Hug my team before going on stage,” added the rapper, who is considered one...

Fans of the 2022 existential romp, Everything Everywhere All at Once may wonder if they’ve seen the face of Waymond Wang before. In fact, they probably did. Actor Ke Huy Quan starred in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom when he was a teenager.
Now 51, a Golden Globe winner, and an Oscar nominee, Quan says he always wanted to revisit one of his ’80s movies characters but never got the chance. Which role would he happily play again? Here’s what we know:
Movie-goers still recognize Ke Huy Quan 30 years later
Moviegoers got their first glimpse of Quan when his character, Short Round, tried to pick Indiana Jones‘ pocket at the Gung Ho bar in Shanghai. In lieu of having the boy arrested on the spot, Jones captured him with a snap of his bullwhip.
The adventure of a lifetime. Nearly 40 years after Indiana Jones and the Goonies, Ke Huy Quan & Steven Spielberg reunite.

There are few contemporary working artists who maintain a more idiosyncratic release schedule than D’Angelo. He’s famous for tinkering and revising his music, eating up years and hundreds of reels of analog tape on his way to an eventual album. It took him 14 years to follow up 2000’s smash hit Voodoo with his most recent album, Black Messiah. In that time, three U.S. presidents occupied the White House, Facebook was invented, and D’Angelo released precisely zero songs.
So it was a surprise when a new D’Angelo track titled “May I?...

“Game cloning” (copying the core mechanics and gameplay loop of a released or in-development title) continues to be a rampant problem, especially on mobile storefronts. The latest victim is “Donut County,” a game by Ben Esposito and published by Annapurna.
Not only did a copycat beat “Donut Country” to the market, Voodoo (the company behind it) managed to land a $200 million investment. A press release announcing the partnership with Wall Street investment bank Goldman Sachs heralds the publisher for its “vision, execution capabilities, and innovation velocity.” This vision, according to Voodoo’s website, includes metrics-driven app development and purchasing installations, a well-documented way to influence app rankings.
If you’ve never heard of “Donut County,” think of it like a reverse “Katamari Damacy.” Instead of making larger and larger balls of junk, you’re swallowing things up into a hole that gets wider as it consumes more. It’s adorable and colorful,...

“Marvel’s Luke Cage” is returning to Netflix after a nearly two-year hiatus, and with it comes another delicious dose of Alfre Woodard as the divine Mariah Dillard. Based on the Marvel comic of the same name, “Luke Cage” follows a reluctant vigilante with super strength and unbreakable skin as he protects his home neighborhood of Harlem. The character was originally introduced in “Jessica Jones,” also on Netflix, before receiving his own series. A newly released trailer focuses on Mariah, a councilwoman with questionable business ties.
“Black women have always had superpowers,” she says in the opening frames of the trailer. “Harlem doesn’t need a hero. It needs a queen.” As she enlists her daughter in the family business, Mariah must battle a formidable foe in John ‘Bushmaster’ McIver (Mustafa Shakir), who vows to take what’s hers. The season promises some series Voodoo, family hierarchies, death by fire,...

Like everything else, Miami is bigger than it used to be. At 5.5 million, the burgeoning Miami-Dade population is the eighth largest metro area in the U.S. You hear Spanish everywhere, from the glitzy Vegas-level Faena Hotel — resplendent wth full-length lobby murals from Pedro Almodovar’s poster designer Juan Gatti, a stuffed peacock, and Damien Hirst’s $15-million 14K gold-painted mastodon skeleton encased in glass perilously close to the ocean — to the famed neon-deco restorations lining Collins Avenue on South Beach, Little Havana’s Ball & Chain, the wild grafitti art at Wynwood Walls and a gut-busting range of South American restaurants, from Chile to Peru.
And you hear Spanish at Miami-Dade College’s sprawling Miami Film Festival, which — after eight years under director Jaie Laplante — leans into its Ibero-American identity via a strong program dominated by Spanish-language films amid a diverse array of narratives, shorts and documentaries.

Out today in select theaters and on VOD is the new found footage horror film VooDoo, and for our latest Q&A feature, we caught up with the movie's writer and direct, Tom Costabile, to discuss the guerilla-style approach to VooDoo, shooting the "Hell" scenes, and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Tom. How and when did you first come up with the idea for VooDoo?
Tom Costabile: Thank you for the interview, I’m honored! The real estate crash happened and was lingering for a long time. I owned a mortgage company at the time and I couldn’t get it back off the ground. So I finally had time to invest in why I came to La in the first place for the first time in ten years and just started writing. Within a year or so we were on set.
