On December 16, actor Timothée Chalamet and producer Ryan Friedkin went to a basketball game between the Los Angeles Clippers and the New York Knicks at Crypto.com Arena.
Chalamet donned a backward blue ball cap, baggy pants, and a sweater with bookshelves, while Friedkin wore a casual blue long-sleeve and jeans.
Chalamet and Friedkin met when they worked on the Neo-noir coming-of-age crime drama Hot Summer Nights in 2017. Chalamet starred in the movie as an awkward teenage boy who becomes entangled in the world of drug trade.
Chalamet’s Wonka hit theaters on December 15 and has a favorable start and benefits from the holiday season’s momentum. While December releases typically don’t achieve massive opening weekends, they often exhibit longevity in theaters and maintain traction well into the new year.
Wonka has received an “A-” CinemaScore from audiences, and critics have granted the film an 83% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Has there ever been a rise and fall quite as swift and dramatic as that of Jonathan Majors? 2023 started off as a killer year for Majors. After years as an up-and-comer, he had three films set to debut within the first three months of the year. His two big studio films, Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania and Creed III, seemed poised to make him a real-deal movie star, while his indie film, Magazine Dreams, was going to serve as an acting showcase.
Indeed, when the film debuted last January at Sundance, many believed his tortured, Travis Bickle-like role would win him an Oscar nomination (I was one of them in my review). His character, Killian Maddox, a wanna-be bodybuilder with serious anger issues, was a distinct creation for him and director Elijah Bynum. The movie quickly sold to Fox Searchlight, and a December 2023 release date was set. Everyone assumed...

TLC is one of the greatest girl groups in history. Following their initial success, TLC sent nine of their singles to the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart - four of which went No. 1: "Creep," "Waterfalls," "No Scrubs," and "Unpretty."

Searchlight Pictures has set a year-end release date for the Jonathan Majors-starring bodybuilder drama Magazine Dreams.
Writer-director Elijah Bynum’s feature will hit theaters on Dec. 8, 2023, at the height of the awards season when Majors would be in the running for a best actor nomination. Magazine Dreams earned strong reviews when it bowed at Sundance, after which Searchlight picked up the feature.
Majors plays Killian Maddox, a man determined to make it in the world of bodybuilding even as he faces a number of struggles, from dealing with feelings of alienation to anger issues, and looking after his ailing grandfather.
Bynum wrote and directed the feature. He previously made Hot Summer Nights, starring Timothée Chalamet and Maika Monroe, which was released by A24 after a South by Southwest debut.
Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige and Mike O’Hearn also star in Magazine Dreams, which is produced by Jennifer Fox, Dan Gilroy and Jeffrey Soros.

Elijah Bynum didn’t want to look the man in the eye. No one at the gym did. He was massive, a bodybuilder who inspired fear because of his size.
“No one wanted to be caught in his path, I think because he made us uncomfortable,” says Bynum of the feeling of his fellow gym patrons.
It was relatively early in the pandemic. Bynum had been thinking a lot about isolation, and wanted to craft a character forgotten by society. When he saw how people avoided this bodybuilder, something clicked: “You have an individual who is both feared and invisible — because of everyone around him. And I thought it was a really peculiar way for someone to move through the world.”

Obsession can drive a man insane. No doubt about that. This riveting character study explores the intensity that comes with obsession, and how striving for perfection can ruin someone. Magazine Dreams is the second feature film written and directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Elijah Bynum, following his 2017 film Hot Summer Nights (which came out of SXSW). After screening during the first weekend at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, this has become one of the most talked about films at the entire fest. Everyone has something to say. It's being discussed so much not because it's the best film at the fest, but because it's one of those films that everyone must talk about - whether it's the lead performance from Jonathan Majors, the uncomfortable story it tells, or the brutality and intensity of what happens, or whether or not it's actually a good film, and how could it be better. All of...

Plot: An amateur bodybuilder (Jonathan Majors) struggles with severe psychological issues while dreaming of stardom.
Review: Elijah Bynum’s Magazine Dreams offers star Jonathan Majors his meatiest role to date. Undergoing a massive transformation that saw him change his body into that of a professional-level bodybuilder, his Killian Maddox is reminiscent of the roles Robert De Niro famously played by Martin Scorsese. Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy both famously inspired Todd Phillips’ Joker (we recently did a Face Off comparing Joker to Taxi Driver), and Bynum’s inspirations seem similar. Yet, as often as we’ve seen this type of role played by white actors, it’s relatively rare for a black actor to dig his teeth into material like this. His race shakes up the formula, making the character a distinct creation for Bynum and Majors.

The Sundance Film Festival-hosted world premiere Elijah Bynum’s Magazine Dreams may have gotten off to a bumpy start as traffic delays and festival congestion in Park City caused the film to start 45 minutes late. But after the credits rolled and the lights came up, its star Jonathan Majors faced the Eccles Theatre audience and received an electric standing ovation.
In what many are calling a brutal and fully committed performance, Majors stars as Killian Maddox, an amateur bodybuilder who sacrifices health, both mental and physical, to pursue a dream of superstardom while he struggles to maintain control of a volatile temper.
The official fest synopsis calls the film “a provocative film that respects the dignity of its protagonist as it pulls no punches in portraying the most physically and emotionally painful moments of his darkening odyssey.” Those who caught the screening were quick to describe it as Taxi Driver.

When an independent filmmaker wants to hypnotize an audience, show off his chops, and make a grand statement, a surefire way to do it — at least if he has the talent — is to create his own version of a “Pulp Fiction”-meets-“Boogie Nights” violence-hanging-in-the-air climax set to a succulent needle drop. In “Magazine Dreams,” the writer-director Elijah Bynum (“Hot Summer Nights”), in his second feature, creates a splendid example of one of those scenes. It’s when his antihero, a bodybuilder named Killian Maddox (Jonathan Majors), has started to fall apart — though you could say that he’s been falling apart from almost the first scene.
Nursing a rage that’s epic and unhinged, Killian, as the “Sopranos” theme song put it, has got himself a gun. It’s a major one: a machine gun that could strafe an elephant. But he’s got it turned on a poor quivering middle-aged man,...

It’s been three years since cinephiles have made their otherwise annual pilgrimage to the Eccles Theater, but the Sundance Film Festival is back! Anyone who doesn’t want to brave Park City temperatures from January 19 – 29, though, can fest online. While a few high-profile releases are being shown exclusively to in-person attendees—Brandon Cronenberg’s “Infinity Pool” and Nicole Holofcener’s “You Hurt My Feelings,” for example—this year’s virtual lineup still features lots of star power and even an Oscar contender for Best International Feature. Single film online tickets can be purchased here.

October is here, which means a bevy of new titles available to watch on HBO and HBO Max. First and foremost, however, we have the highly anticipated “The White Lotus” Season 2, which debuts on Oct. 30 on HBO and will be streaming on HBO Max at the same time. New location, new characters (save for Jennifer Coolidge from Season 1), same music.
Also new this month is the docuseries follow-up “The Vow: Part Two,” further exploring the inner sanctum of Nxivm, which debuts on Oct. 17 on HBO and is streaming on HBO Max the same night. There’s also “Avenue 5” Season 2 on Oct. 10 and the new Chip and Joanna Gaines series “Fixer Upper: The Castle” on Oct. 14 (that one will also debut on Magnolia Network and discovery+ at the same time).
Other noteworthy additions this month include library titles like “Nightcrawler,” “The Witch,” “Terms of Endearment” and the underseen comedy gem “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Things are going pretty, pretty well for HBO and HBO Max at the moment thanks to the smashing success of Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. With its list of new releases for October 2022 though, HBO Max appears ready to up the ante even more.
The headlining title on HBO Max this month is undoubtedly The White Lotus season 2 on Oct. 30. Mike White’s freshly-Emmy-winning comedy looked to be a one-off after season 1. But cooler heads prevailed and the series is now returning in an anthology format. What will season 2 look like? Guess we’ll find out when the show checks in to Sicily later this month.
Aside from The White Lotus, HBO also has a few other TV shows of note this month. The torturously titled Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler debuts its third season on Oct. 6. That will be followed by Avenue 5 season 2 on Oct.

The female-driven crime drama Cadejo Blanco has unveiled a clip in advance of its screening at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Industry Selects section. Cadejo Blanco is reminiscent of Maria Full of Grace and Miss Bala, addressing timely issues of lack of opportunities for women, youth violence, and indiscriminate crime in Guatemala. Writer/director Justin Lerner spent years in Guatemala interviewing young people with gang affiliations, collecting their life stories. For authenticity, he cast his interview subjects to play themselves in the film, and then spent a year doing acting workshops with them. He encouraged each actor to revise the script as they saw necessary, even during shooting, a process that allowed the non-professional cast to ensure their stories were being properly represented on screen.

Few living novelists have been adapted as frequently as Stephen King, and yet, you can count on one hand the number of truly great movies to have come from that endeavor. That’s why I’m more keen on a new genre of projects that distill the essence of what King does best — retro tales of small-town New England characters faced with dangerous situations and the even more threatening local nutjobs, à la “Stranger Things” — than I am to catch “In the Tall Grass” or the upcoming “Doctor Sleep.”
My favorite King movie has long been “Stand by Me,” and I’d wager that’s one of the key influences writer-director Kevin McMullin had in mind with “Low Tide,” . There’s also a fair amount of “The Lost Boys” and “Goonies” in this teenage “Treasure of the Sierra Madre,” although first-time helmer McMullin is especially good at channeling the King vibe.

Oscar-winning film composer and symphony orchestra conductor Andre Previn died Thursday at his home in Manhattan, his manager confirmed to the New York Times. He was 89.
The former enfant terrible of motion picture scoring and accomplished jazz pianist was honored with four Academy Awards. He won the first two, for best scoring of a musical picture (a category that has since been retired), for “Gigi” and “Porgy & Bess” in 1958 and 1959, respectively, while still in his 20s. He then won two for best adaptation or treatment (another retired sub-category) in 1963 and 1964 for “Irma la Douce” and “My Fair Lady,” respectively.
He later abandoned films to conduct such esteemed orchestras as the London Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

At just 22 years old, actor Timothée Chalamet has skyrocketed quickly as one of the most popular and in-demand performers of his generation. On the heels of a whirlwind year that included an Oscar nomination for “Call Me by Your Name,” he’s following things up with a dive into real-life addiction drama “Beautiful Boy.” Starring as Nic Sheff, whose memoir “Tweak” formed one half of the script’s inspiration along with father David’s “Beautiful Boy,” Chalamet says the ambition wasn’t to top the rawness of films like Uli Edel’s “Christiane F.” or the Safdie brothers’ “Heaven Knows What,” but to bring the matter-of-fact authenticity of the situation to the fore. A huge part of unlocking things, he says, was of course meeting Nic himself.

"The events of that summer would change my life..." Freestyle Digital Media has released the official trailer for another summer coming-of-age film, this one titled Age of Summer, from filmmaker Bill Kiely. There have been quite a few "summer" films this year about kids growing up and running into the troubles of life: Summer of 84, All Summers End, Hot Summer Nights - to name a few. This one is about a "determined teenage boy" who struggles to find acceptance within the Jr. Lifeguards squad, while juggling relationships and challenges in the summer of '83. Starring Peter Stomare, Jake Ryan, Brain Van Holt, Diarmaid Murtagh, Percy Hynes White, Kane Ritchotte, and Madeleine Wade. It looks alright. Watch below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Bill Kiely's Age of Summer, direct from YouTube: An awkward teen who is a recent transplant to a small Southern California beach town tries to...

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Note: After a batch of A24 films on Netflix were added last week, even more join the streaming platform this week.
A Most Violent Year (J.C. Chandor)
The Sidney Lumet talk is apt, as J.C. Chandor’s A Most Violent Year certainly captures the scope and pulse of the late master’s dramas. But this is a dark-side-of-the-American-dream epic with a reach all its own. Oscar Isaac and...

Elijah Bynum’s directorial debut and A24 release, “Hot Summer Nights” is not a by-the-numbers coming of age story as an unlikely teenager winds up in a sticky situation dealing drugs to the locals in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Not the ideal way to cross the threshold into adulthood, but still—a right of passage nevertheless.
Navigating the space between self-expression and simply fitting in, “Hot Summer Nights” follows Daniel Middleton (Timothée Chalamet), a scrawny, inward-thinking and socially awkward young man struggling to escape the trappings of his teenage years.

Tom Cruise’s mission, should he choose to accept it, is to steal the box office crown.
Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” looks to easily win the weekend, where the franchise’s sixth installment is eyeing a North American debut between $50 million and $65 million.
Stellar reviews could help “Fallout” land a series-best domestic launch. That title currently belongs to “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” which opened with $55.5 million in 2015. The highest-grossing iteration is “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” ($694.7 million), followed by “Rogue Nation” ($682.7 million), and Mission: Impossible 2″ ($546.4 million). Combined, the series has earned over $2.7 billion globally.
Due to production delays stemming from Cruise breaking his foot on set, “Fallout” is by far the most expensive film in the series with a $178 million price tag. The studio is hoping for an overseas boost when the movie opens this weekend in 36 international markets, including the United Kingdom, Russia, and Spain. It doesn’t bow in Japan until August,...

Imagine a wistful hooking-up-on-the-boardwalk coming-of-age film, set on Cape Cod during the long hot summer of 1991, starring Timothée Chamalet in a variation on the passively precocious owl-eyed dreamer he played in “Call Me by Your Name.” Now imagine a scuzzy underworld drama that takes that same Chalamet character, in all his hooded sensual innocence, and turns him into a pot-dealing version of Mark Wahlberg in “Boogie Nights”: a cold hard opportunist who gets hooked on the life.
Put them together and you have “Hot Summer Nights,” a weirdly “romantic” drug drama that wastes no time burning plausibility to the ground. Yet even when it does, the actors keep it alive (sort of). Still, you can’t stop wondering if the first-time writer-director, Elijah Bynum, who has a talent for atmosphere, meant for us to actually take the story on the level. If so, it was a miscalculation. The Seven Year Itch The movie that gave us the iconic Marilyn Monroe subway grate scene also gave us a hot weather tip we probably never asked for: on a particularly scorching day, stick your underwear in the freezer.

Though the implication of a toxic relationship is not lost on viewers, this ’80s erotic thriller film starring Kim Baysinger and Mickey Rourke certainly turned up the heat, with sexual escapades involving food and sewers. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof In the film adaptation of the Tennessee Williams play, Elizabeth Taylor stars as the titular “Cat,” Maggie, who aides in the reconciliation of her husband’s (Paul Newman) family in the midst of summer tempest.
9 1/2 Weeks E.L. James, take notes. Though the implication of a toxic relationship is not lost on viewers, this ’80s erotic thriller film starring Kim Baysinger and Mickey Rourke certainly turned up the heat, with sexual escapades involving food and sewers. Set on Cape Cod during the sizzling summer of 1991 – and on the cusp of Hurricane Bob’s arrival – Hot Summer Nights features breakout star Timothee Chalamet as Daniel, a teen who’s been sent by his widowed mom to spend the season on Cape Cod with his Aunt Barb (Rebecca Koon) before starting college in the fall. A premise like this could go any number of ways: comedy, romance, crime drama, sexual coming-of-ager … name your overworked genre. In a cover-all-your-bets move, debuting director Elijah Bynum makes the risky decision to...

A playlist in search of a movie, the teen melodrama “Hot Summer Nights” flips through its atmospheric, music-saturated visuals with the confidence of a carnival barker, but very quickly the pileup of influences, postures, and tones makes for more of a hot mess than a sweltering good time.
The debut feature of writer-director Elijah Bynum, “Hot Summer Nights” carries that unmistakable first-film vibe of breathless assurance combined with wince-worthy sense of direction, in which the pointing out of movie references becomes the only noteworthy constellation in a superficial coming-of-age yarn.
Bynum wants so badly for you to feel the full force of his brooding, violent, sex-drenched vision of a momentous Cape Cod summer, whereby a James Dean-esque story of the young, wounded and beautiful can be made without Dean. But also — unintentionally — without the coalescing, original psychological insight through which Dean became Dean.

Hollywood’s new go-to leading man Timothée Chalamet is in talks to star in Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming remake of “Dune,” which Legendary is targeting for production early next year, TheWrap has learned.
Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi novel was adapted in 1984 by David Lynch in a notoriously high-profile box office bomb that starred Kyle MacLachlan. Legendary acquired the film rights to “Dune” and its five sequels two years ago.
Like MacLachlan, Chalamet will play Paul Atreides, the son of a noble family who takes over the desert planet Arrakis — which is the only source of coveted spice melange.

Timothée Chalamet isn’t about to let all the career momentum accumulated from last year’s “Call Me by Your Name” and “Lady Bird” go to waste. Though the early consensus has been positive for the Oscar nominee’s upcoming coming-of-age film “Hot Summer Nights,” it’s the biographical addiction drama “Beautiful Boy” that’s been entrusted with an awards season release date in the fall.
