Ugh. Save Your Money!
OctoberTaylor23 May 2015
This movie was complete, utter, crap! I hate when movies are advertised, and sold, on the sex appeal. Yet, when you watch the film, it feels like you're watching the God damn Disney Channel. There was practically NO NUDITY! what so ever in Chocolate City. Which really frustrates me (if you couldn't tell). Because in all the advertisements for this freaking movie there were tag-lines like: "Better than Magic Mike" "Come see the real magic" BLAH BLAH BLAH!

This movie was supposed to be better than Magic Mike? I think not. Both films had shitty plot lines, shitty actors (except for few), but at least Magic Mike had nudity! Every actor in Magic Mike got nude. MULTIPLE TIMES.

In Chocolate City? Well, only Tyson Beckford got naked-for a fraction of a millisecond. Like, God damn, I saw Tyson more nude on his freaking Instagram. Ugh, I am so angry! This movie is like 50 Shades of Grey; sold on the sex appeal, but doesn't deliver. And Chocolate City actually had real-life strippers stripping in the movie. Yet, they don't get naked either? What in the actual hell! You can Google these strippers and see more nudity than what was shown in this damn movie. NONE!

And it's not like I was looking for porn when I went to see Chocolate City. I was just looking for what the advertisements promised: magic. Yet, I got a Sesame Street take on Magic Mike? Yawn....

I figure the greedy Director is saving all the good shots for the DVD (which, honestly, I'll buy, but I won't be happy about it). This movie just doesn't seem finished. And I, literally, wanted to blow my brains out trying to get through the corny church scenes. Sweet baby Jesus!

With movies like this, I can put up with all the shortcomings, IF there is a payoff. There was none. And I want my money back!

People, just wait for the unrated DVD. I'm sure that'll be better.

B.E.T. Original Y'all.
Big_Filmer10 June 2015
Wasn't this suppose to be some competition to the upcoming magic mike xxl? Guess not. Looks like it flopped so bad that I'm literally watching it right now on B.E.T. All that hype for nothing. Lmfao. Guess this is one rip-off that ain't getting no love. Tyson Beckford acting career seems to continue to go downhill. Second flop in the same year. First one being Addicted. Which was yet another ripoff. That one copied 50 shades of Grey. That one didn't even get released on blu ray. Just DVD. Wtf. That's the first time I ever, ever, ever heard of that happening. Even the movie The Interview, which was to be released in theaters but was banned or something due to the way it portrayed Korea, was released on Netflix but still got a blu ray release as well.

For what it was, for what it was suppose to be, it was dull and formulated.
subxerogravity28 August 2015
Let's get the obvious out of the way...It's not Magic Mike.

I assumed that this movie would be the difference between Vanilla or chocolate. What is your preference ladies?

Chocolate City is like every other movie I've seen on Bounce TV or BET late night when I'm flipping though the channel. The only difference is it's about Male stripping, but that is not much of a difference.

It tries to go over the what it's like to be a professional exotic dancer but the film was too by-the-numbers to be anything but dull, and I'm not interested enough in the ups and downs of male pole riders to do nothing but sleep through it.

Barely worth making fun of.

Entertaining but the plot is thin
Gordon-119 February 2016
This film tells the story of a young man in college, who lives with his mother and elder brother. They go completely broke, and hence he chooses to make some quick money by exotic dancing in a club for the ladies.

The plot is very predictable and thin, but it's OK because people watch "Chocolate City" for something other than the plot. One thing that it does well is the portrayal of interpersonal relationships, especially the mother and son relationship, and the relationship with the girlfriend. The tension and competition between dancers get portrayed nicely as well. I enjoyed watching the dancing and listening to the songs. I think "Chocolate City" is entertaining.

One for the ladies
nogodnomasters29 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Michael McCoy (Robert Ri'chard) goes to college, works a less than minimum wage job, and helps support his mom (Vivica A. Fox). At the urging of his unemployed older brother (DeRay Davis) Mike gets on stage and quickly becomes a sensation.Mike adds this to his full schedule which causes school and relationship problems.

Okay. I'm a guy and I was bored. The dialogue was bad which made the actors look bad. Much of the film was guys dry humping the audience as dollars are unrealistically thrown into the air at random.

The movie was filmed in California, but they managed to secure Atlanta plates (Fulton Co) for their vehicles to confuse us. I had a number of African-American males tell me this was a good film. I would respectfully disagree.

Guide: No real sex outside of humping and groping. Partial butt nudity.

Pitiful! and FAKE!
mimiybyazphil5 September 2021
Clicked on this TRAIN WRECK of a movie under "Hometown Hub Atlanta" What a mistake tons of B and C list actors, bad script annd most offensive of all NOT filmed IN Atlanta!! They used tge ATL skyline in the opening scenes, but that was it!! The rest of the movie was California or some place with PALM trees!

Atlanta has lots of things but Palm trees are definately not one of them!! Watch this if you are missing some second tier actors from the 80s and 90s, no other reason to watch.

Are they serious?
foti91218 August 2018
Was this supposed to be a parody? I have it 2/10 only for their hot bodies. Might have gotten more if they'd shown their junk.

Best movie ever!
givemecouture24 May 2015
The gorgeous Robert Ri'chard stars in a typical college student- come-stripper story in Chocolate City. Urged by his brother Chris McCoy, played by a sorta-funny DeRay Davis, Michael McCoy somehow finds his way (who really cares how he got there we just care that he is there) to a dance floor where he dances topless for cash. I don't want to spoil the movie for you (ha ha) but I must say, I don't understand why anyone who is even remotely attracted to the male species would give this movie less than 10 stars. This movie delivered EXACTLY the package it sells, and more. The dancers unfold like chocolates out of a Godiva box! Bitter Dark (Tyson Beckford), Sweet Caramel (Robert), Hunky Milk Chocolate (don't know his name but he is the first dancer and he alone was worth the ticket). The dancing was crazy! 1000% better than Magic Mike (sorry Channing) on sexiness of the dance, much smoother and gave you a glimpse at what REALLY goes down in the club, not the watered down version.

Moral of this critique is - if you like looking at hot men, you will LOVE this movie. If you are looking for a great, life changing movie with an amazing script that grips your emotions and inspires you to look at life differently you will probably not find that here. Unless of course you started the movie not liking men and then by the end became a full fledged queen, which I could totally see happening. They were that hot.

Not so bad
angienaziya11 July 2015
I usually don't post, but before I bought the movie I read reviews, and they were scathing. They condemned this movie to hell, but it wasn't that bad.

I try to support African American and Indie films, and I have seen some bad ones... like really bad. I think it was a happy medium for those who want to watch independent films, but aren't extremely raunchy. I feel like they were still trying to catch some of the AA church patrons who buy indie films and help blow up Tyler Perry, so there is only so far that they could go. I like Robert Ri'chard as an actor, I think he did an excellent job. In my opinion, the script was predictable, but so is everything else now days. When was the last original horror film, and isn't everything coming out a remake or sequel just about. If you want to see black actors, who you otherwise don't get to see regularly in major motion pictures or on television, tell a familiar story with some music you can groove to while grinding their super sexy bodies, this will do it. No, it is not a major Hollywood production. Yes, it made me smile. Yes, it made me chuckle a little, and hell yes it made me want to go grab my man.

The movie was 3.99 on amazon to watch, I spend more than that on a burger. Why not support the AA movie movement and have a little fun in the process?

I just wanted to write to show some love for the work that these people did.

Sexual Chocolate!
filmartst196 June 2015
I know people have been trying to compare "Chocolate City" and Magic Mike, for one they poke fun at magic mike in the film which I thought was funny and cute. Oh and two there is no comparison Chocolate city really is a better film. I have seen both films and Magic Mike really was the first of it's kind..."Male strippers" and that's why it received all the hype back then, but now I truly don't know why the film is so overrated.

"Chocolate City" really brings the heat in their dance scenes and will have any females or gay males melting. Straight guys should take notes rather than hating on the black males in the film which sadly I think part of the low rating may be due to racial bias. This film actually had a storyline that had an ending, the character had a purpose, struggles and resolution as a proper storyline should have. The acting was pretty good everyone was convincing and the dancers did I mention were amazing. I honestly want to throw my copy of "magic mike" in the trash. In this Film ALL the men could dance, move, grind, gyrate unlike Magic Mike where only Channing Tatum could do those things and the other men looked like they didn't even take any dance lessons.

Please Don't sleep on this film people of any ethnicity can enjoy it, so don't let that stop you because you will be missing out. Honestly, as a film major I am picky about films and I can assure you this one truly has a storyline that you can get into depending on your tastes. The previews for this film says it's magic mike with some chocolate, nope it's really in a class of it's own because Magic Mike didn't deliver on a storyline or sexy dance scenes, now like I said Channing Tatum was great, but it is ruined when his back up dancers can barely move, They went for popular actors in Magic Mike, but unfortunately those men had absolutely no dance training and were a bit embarrassing. Chocolate City did go for some popular men (Ginuwine, Tyson Beckford), but they made sure they had strippers that can actually dance and make any woman watching this swoon.

I compared the two films to clarify, I have seen both and while I really like Channing Tatum in Magic Mike, The True Magic is in Chocolate City, Honestly if they flashed the guys privates I think females would have fainted, so it was better to be more discrete and just tease us, but you never know if they create a sequel there may be a chance. please note this is a movie about stripping and someone is in the center of that, so judge it for that...And don't judge the movie on the fact that it is an all African American cast...Judge it on the entertainment it brought to the table. So, the Verdict is in "Chocolate City" is 10x better than Magic Mike and overall it was a very entertaining Film that I plan on watching again and again.

P.S Bolo the Entertainer is Amazing, This film truly did the work and got a professional stripper who shows how to make it rain in chocolate city.

Comparisons Inbound
refinedsugar21 February 2024
I was both surprised and happy to see 'Chocolate City' name drop 'Magic Mike' right off the bat. It was a smart move because you know it was the direct comparison viewers were gonna make. This tale aptly takes place in Atlanta and of course features the African American side to male strippers. It goes thru a formula plot, but with likable characters & delivers the visuals females will enjoy.

Michael (Robert Ri'chard) has a partial scholarship to college, minimum wage job, attends church and a family strapped for cash. A chance meeting with Princeton (Michael Jai White) lands him a job that of course turns out to be stripping. Michael in shape and a good dancer takes to the money as he plays a balancing act of secrecy from both his mom (Vivica A. Fox) and fellow student turned girlfriend Carmen (Imani Hakim).

Other notable cast members include Carmen Electra as the club DJ, singer Ginuwine & male model Tyson Beckford as fellow strippers. Writer/director Jean-Claude La Marre plays the local church pastor. It's really Ri'chard's likability and the screen presence of White that stood out for me in rehashed drama. You have to accept how quickly Michael's reluctance for this line of work goes away. Then the speed at which he becomes a star and lies to everyone around him.

The rest offers no surprises. Failing school grades. A concerned mother wondering where all the money (drugs?) is coming from. A barely developed feud with an a-hole stripper. A girlfriend who finds out the truth and the fallout. I'm obviously not the right demographic, but for a dtv flick about male strippers this could have been 10X worse.

Rated SC for Sexual Chocolate
tmm_870524 May 2015
What's for breakfast? When Mike Aka Sexy Chocolate looked into the camera, I thought he was looking right at me. All oiled up and raining dolla bills, this epic chronicle of urban dancers put the D in delicious. Whitey Soderbergh should be all over this piece of chocolate cinema. Black Dynamite? Nah. Trouble Man? Nuh uh. Shaft? Not enough! This has it all with Genuwine, BOLO the entertainer, Darrin Henson, MICHAEL JAI WHITE, and even Carmen Electra gets to shout out to the boyz! Vivica A Fox is amazing as Sexy Chocolate's mother, the only thing disappointing about this is that she doesn't deliver her chocolate milk. OH WELL. Michael JAI White plays the mentor that leads Sexy Chocolate the way to the stage and helps fulfill his dreams of good pay and hysterical black women with a few whiteys peppered in. If you take your coffee black, you will not be disappointed! Highest of recommends!

"Chocolate City" better than "Magic Mike"?
haywiresbayb1 June 2015
Well, my mother said "Chocolate City" is better than "Magic Mike". She has already watched it like 10 times. I haven't seen "Magic Mike" yet but i think women will really enjoy "Chocolate City". Robert Richard from the television show "One on One" definitely gave a hot, engaging performance. Tyson Beckford's performance was hot as well but i hate his character in this movie. He made me want to punch him in the face..LOL :) This is not for men unless you are into men Ha! Ladies, i don't think your man would want you to watch this movie so try to watch it when he is not around..LOL. Anywho, I think the movie is great! Go check it out!

Magic Mike Who?
bigpapiibear6 July 2015
This movie is so much better hands down. If they put this out before Magic Mike I'm sure it would have gotten better ratings. Stop trashing it just because they're black,I know that's the reason why people are trashing the film because I've seen some of the reviews and message boards trashing on it because of these mens color I think people need to stop being petty and get over that mess and focus on the movie for what it is pure entertainment. If you don't want to watch the movie because they're black and you think they're taking something from Magic Mike just stop it because you know there's millions of other movies out there that take the same story line and use different actors all the time. Anyways that's my two cents if you haven't seen the movie check it out you wont be disappointed bunch of beautiful men and bodies you can't go wrong =D

Authentic...Watching Again!!!!
lm_crawford25 July 2015
I was upset this was not in a theater near me so thanks BET! I've only been to two strip clubs in my life...one in Miami...and this movie right here captured the authenticity 💯%! If you missed it...don't listen to others reviews...watch it for yourself! I truly enjoyed this movie much more than the Mike move. The acting was on point. Michael Jai White...very convincing...Dee Jay...funny as always...loved seeing Imani back on the screen...Darin dang you still got it....alright now Tyson...Vivica...yep you played that mama...Ri'Chard wow hard to say this since we watched you grow up on television/ movies...YOU DID THAT CUTIE PIE! THEN they threw in the pros....good gawd Bolo!!!!! The others were great too...just don't know who was who but for a good night out....all will do! There were also some surprise cameos...ya'll did good!

My bottom line: Hands down...better script, better acting and DEFINITELY BETTER DANCERS AND DANCING ROUTINES! Will watch again and again!
