Two failing actors and a porn star. A car full of contraband. One hell of a road trip…
Scott Mifune (Yoji Yamada) and Lenny Bulger (Dylan Heath) are two failed actors attempting to eke out an existence in Portland, Oregon. Between smoking weed and embarrassing auditions, their dreams of moving back to Hollywood are seemingly dying. That is until a change of luck finds them with an opportunity to make a large sum of money to transport drugs to LA. En route, they defend a porn starlet, Indiana Union (Elissa Dowling), from her violent manager and she joins them on their journey. Along the way, the trio meet a wild array of criminals,...

The Chicago-based company announced the acquisition on the eve of the film’s screening at horror-focused The Overlook Film Festival in New Orleans this weekend, following a buzzy world premiere at SXSW.
MPI will release the movie via its genre subsidiary Dark Sky Films in late fall 2024.
Iranian and French acting star Farahani plays a single mother who makes a living from smuggling exotic animals and illicit products such as birds of prey, venom and rare roots.
In a bid to get her son out of the city and offer him a better future, she designs and develops a mobile app that connects clients and marabouts.

Our friends have been to past Hard:line Film Festival editions in Regensburg, Germany. A Unesco World Heritage Site it is an incredibly beautiful city in Bavaria at the northmost point of the Danube River. What a place to host an international film festival for genre film. We can see why friends have gone in the past. This year another friend, Ted Geoghegan, is headed over to screen his latest, the German premiere of Brooklyn 45, and hold a retrospective of his other films, Mohawk and We Are Still Here. He will also hold a masterclass for guests of the festival and just be the all-around nice guy that he is, enjoying some good old Bavarian hospitality. For four days in April a small selection...

I would have expected the new indie anthology film Beware the Boogeyman to have come out a while back, closer to the release of the widely hyped Stephen King adaptation, The Boogeyman. The inspiration is obvious, one scene even has a character holding a copy of Night Shift, the collection of King’s stories that brought it to most people’s attention. In any case, it’s out now and wants you to believe in it.
Beware the Boogeyman opens with Dr. Tristan Makenzie the newest potential addition to Silverdale Psychiatric Hospital’s staff going in for her orientation on, of all days, a Sunday. Dr. Gabey Moon meets...

France’s Canal+ Group said that it has increased its stake in multi-territory Asian streaming platform Viu to 30%.
“This additional investment underlines the confidence that Canal+ has in Viu and its teams. It also highlights the determination of Canal+ to make Asia its next growth vector, through its strategic partnership with Pccw, and through an acceleration of growth at Viu, a premium streaming service present in Asia, the Middle East and South Asfrica,” the French group said in a statement. Additionally, it said that its investment in Viu now amounted to some $300 million and that it retains an option to increase its stake to 50%.
In June last year, Canal+ announced that it was to pay $200 million for an initial 26.1% stake in Viu and that it would make a total staggered investment of $300 million.
In results published on Friday, Pccw said: “Viu saw 27% growth in revenue in2023 […] propelled...

Hey there! If you’re reading this, you must still be around, and I’m glad to see it. These are the films that entranced me the most with their visions of movie magic; I couldn’t get to everything , but I saw what I saw, and that’s that. (Time seems to be set on permanent acceleration these days.)
It was another great year for horror, and judging by this alphabetical, 100% accurate and objective list, one teeming with variety; from Beau is Afraid’s bone-dry hilarious foray into existential Mothering, to Stuart Gordon-inspired Skinamax bodyswapping (Suitable Flesh), and straight tributes (Thanksgiving).

The festival will open with “From Okinawa With Love,” by Sunairi Hiroshi, which premiered at the Dmz Documentary Festival in Korea, and tracks the work of a photographer who investigated the African American G.I. scene around the island’s U.S. air bases. The inaugural Cinema at Sea – Okinawa Pan-Pacific International Film Festival is pleased to announce this year’s program line-up, featuring almost 40 films from around the world, screenings from November 23rd to 29th at cinemas across Okinawa.

“The festival, initiated its groundwork in 2018 with the mission of exploring the Ocean and Pacific regions. Film, acting as a global lens, allows us to bridge the gap between different islands, fostering an inclusive atmosphere in Okinawa, where diverse cultures and nationalities converge. This embodies the essence of Cinema at Sea. Rather than defining boundaries on land, we encourage a perspective that looks outward, across the ocean. By doing so, our individual worlds expand. Our goal is to offer the audience a transformative experience, encouraging them to see beyond conventional limits.” said festival director Huang Yin-Yu.

“An interim agreement allows microbudget movies to see the light of day,” star-producer says.
Circle Collective’s independent anthology What Doesn’t Float has secured a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement, paving the way for star-producer Pauline Chalamet (Sex Lives Of College Girls) to promote ahead of the imminent release in New York and Los Angeles.
Chalamet will do press next week to support the releases in New York on September 22 at Roxy Cinema and Los Angeles on October 6 at Brain Dead Studios. It is a timely boost for arthouse distributor Circle Collective, which has already virtually sold out the New York opening day.

It was a joke that kickstarted Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne’s film career and, as she freely admits, not a good one.
After a casting call went out around schools in her region of New Zealand for Taika Waititi’s beloved comedy-drama Hunt for the Wilderpeople, her parents forced her to audition. “They made me do it — I didn’t even want to do it,” she says. 15 at the time, she was asked to sing a song and tell a joke. So in the ‘Marae’ — the traditional Maori meeting house (Ngatai-Melbourne is Maori, of Ngāti Porou and Ngai Tūhoe descent) — they recorded a video of her singing and telling her grandfather’s favourite one-liner.
“Ok, I’m just gonna say it,” she says, speaking to THR from Auckland. “What’s the difference between a bird and a fly? A bird can fly, but a fly can’t bird.”

Ted Geoghegan's Brooklyn 45 transports you to a impromptu séance in 1945, where a group of war veterans are haunted by the ghosts of their past. An incredible character piece, with mezmerizing performances, this is a film you won't want to miss and I was fortunate to catch it on the big screen this past March at the Overlook Film Festival. With the film having premiered today on Shudder, I wanted to share details from the post-screening Q&a, where Ted talked about working on the story with his father, creating this fantastic role for Larry Fessenden, and much more!
Origins of the story:
Ted Geoghegan: When we were making We Are Still Here, there's a séance scene in that movie between Larry Fessenden and Andrew Sensenig. Whenever I would come to film festivals, everybody would say, "Oh, that movie was really good, but man, I love that séance." My joke response was always,...

Plot: Trapped in their host’s lounge, the Greatest Generation now finds themselves put to one final test, with their only route to freedom being more bloodshed.
Review: The 1940s isn’t an era we see utilized often in horror so it immediately brings up some intrigue when a genre film takes place here. Due to World War 2, the 40s are often relegated to some war stories, and here is no different. Brooklyn 45 follows five military veterans meeting together after the war is over. But they soon find their friendship tested as their past comes back to haunt them. It’s an interesting concept, that caters to those that like a slow burn. But those expecting answers may end up a tad disappointed.

"I will take you where you need to go." Madman Films has released an official trailer for an anthology film titled We Are Still Here, opening for release in Australia later in 2023. Spanning over 1000 years into the past, present and future, We Are Still Here interweaves eight tales of Indigenous struggle, to tell a sweeping story of hope and survival. The film premiered at Australian film festivals last year, and also played at TIFF, plus the San Diego, Hawaii, and Minneapolis St. Paul Film Festivals in the US. Created as a response to the 250th anniversary of the Second voyage of James Cook to Australia in 1772, the project consists of a number of linked short films by a selection of Indigenous Australian + Māori filmmakers about the impact of settler colonialism on the region's indigenous cultures. A different mix of short films that take us from the past to the present,...

Despite the spooky séance setup in Brooklyn 45, writer/director Ted Geoghegan is less interested in exploring a literal interpretation of ghosts. Instead, the filmmaker connects the ghosts of our past as a metaphor for present-day national turmoil and paranoia. The period-set chamber piece gives precedence to fraught tension among friends over conventional scares.
It’s December 27, 1945, mere months after the official end of World War II. The nation is still reeling, but for Lt. Col. Clive “Hock” Hockstatter (Larry Fessenden), it’s even worse; he lost his wife Susie on Thanksgiving. In an attempt to reconnect with her, Hock invites military friends Marla Sheridan (Anne Ramsay), her husband Bob (Ron E. Rains), Major Archibald Stanton (Jeremy Holm), and Major Paul Difranco (Ezra Buzzington) over to his Park Slope Brownstone in Brooklyn under the guise of drinks among old friends. Exclusive: AMC Network’s genre-focused streaming service Shudder has commissioned its latest original movie, Brooklyn 45, written and directed by Ted Geoghegan. The streamer will launch the pic exclusively in 2022.
The film, which began principal photography on December 2, is set on a freezing evening in December 1945, as five military veterans gather together in the ornate parlour of a Brooklyn brownstone. Best friends since childhood, they have reunited to support their troubled host – but when his invitation for cocktails turns into an impromptu séance, the metaphoric ghosts of their past become all-too-literal.
Geoghegan penned the screenplay with assistance from his late father, a disabled Air Force Veteran-turned-history teacher.
“Since losing my dad, I’ve been obsessed with bringing the powerful, timely script we collaborated on to the screen. A story of the ghosts, rage, and toxicity that follow all human conflict, the heart of Brooklyn 45 beats just...

Jakob’s Wife is the second film directed by Travis Stevens, who initially became known in the genre film world as a producer. Snowfort Pictures, his company, has among its credits: Adam Wingard’s A Horrible Way to Die; the documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune; Ted Geoghegan’s We Are Still Here and Mohawk; and Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s The Endless. Some of these directors went on to work in Hollywood: Wingard directed Godzilla vs. Kong, the highest-grossing blockbuster during the pandemic; and Benson and Moorhead are currently working on Moon Knight, a series that will premiere in 2022 as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Stevens made his directorial debut with Girl on the Third Floor, wherein a man (C.M. Punk) struggles to renovate an old house in...

The Pastor and the Master: Stevens Enjoyably Re-Vamps Domestic Distress in Grisly Black Comedy

Barbara Crampton is the queen of indie horror. Gracious and humble as she is, it’s a title she would most likely reject. These are precisely among the qualities that make her an icon: she’s a leader in the industry who makes it a point to bring others up, a gigantic star too nice to ever act like one. She’s the absolute best and deserves to be celebrated not just during #IndieHorrorMonth, but all year long.
From her earliest genre performances in movies like Re-Animator, Chopping Mall, and From Beyond, there was something special about Crampton. She could lend gravity and empathy to even the most outrageous scenario, from the notorious decapitated head scene in Re-Animator to the giant robot battles of Full Moon’s Robot Wars, to which she brings energy and spunk worthy of Marion Ravenswood. She could be a Bdsm-clad mad scientist in From Beyond...

Over the last decade, us genre fans have been blessed by the second phase in genre veteran Barbara Crampton’s career that has seen her tackle a wide array of roles in projects like You’re Next, We Are Still Here, Sun Choke, Beyond the Gates, Channel Zero, Road Games, Into the Dark: Culture Shock, and many more. Beyond that, Crampton has also stepped into the role of producer on several films and even contributes to Fangoria with her insightful column as well.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Crampton about her latest role in Sacrifice, a Norweigan cult thriller where she plays the leader of a cult who has plans for an unassuming couple that arrive in the area, unaware of the danger lurking at every turn. During our interview with Barbara, she discussed her involvement with Sacrifice, taking on a Norweigan accent for her role in the film,...

Ted Geoghegan is a jack of all trades. Not only is he a filmmaker, having helmed the very well received movies We Are Still Here and Mohawk, he’s a successful publicist. When not making films, he’s promoting others that he’s passionate about. Now, he’s also added podcaster to the mix, beginning a radio series called “This is Not a Story About…” during the current Covid-19 pandemic. Coronavirus has sapped the creativity and productivity of many, but not Geoghegan. So, it was a pleasure to chat with him about this latest venture, which is wonderfully well researched and a true cinephile’s dream. Yesterday I hopped on the phone with Geoghegan to talk about the podcast “This is Not a Story About…” and how this subject fascinates him so. Essentially, he tells a story about a bit of forgotten history, tied into a story you likely already know.

Stars: Phil Brooks, Trieste Kelly Dunn, Sarah Brooks, Travis Delgado, Elissa Dowling, Karen Woditsch, Marshall Bean, Anish Jethmalani, Bishop Stevens | Written and Directed by Travis Stevens
Travis Stevens, producer of films such as A Horrible Way to Die, The Aggression Scale, Starry Eyes and We Are Still Here (all fanatasic genre films may I add), turns his hand to directing with a haunted house film that, ultimately, feels like a lesser entry in the Amityville franchise.
In a surprising move, former wrestler-turned-mma fighter Phil Brooks takes the lead as a man tipped over the edge while renovating his new family home. However bursting pipes, rotting walls and unidentifiable slime were not what Don Koch (Brooks) expected when he convinced his pregnant wife he could renovate their new Victorian home himself. In over his head, under duress, and tempted by his old weaknesses – especially from a mysteriously seductive neighbour – Don soon...
