With a fresh Leading Actress Oscar nomination for the role of Mollie Kyle in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone is next set to enter sci-fi territory with upcoming movie The Memory Police—a move that will also reunite her with Scorsese, set to executive produce.
“It’s on an unnamed island at an unnamed place, unnamed time,” Gladstone said of the new film, during a Q&a following a Killers of the Flower Moon screening in LA on Sunday. “So it takes place nowhere and therefore everywhere.”
The Memory Police will be directed by Reed Morano, with a script from Charlie Kaufman, adapted from the Yōko Ogawa novel of the same name.
“The adaptation is done by Charlie Kaufman,” Gladstone continued, “so it’s labeled as a sci-fi, but in the way that [Kaufman’s previous films] Eternal Sunshine [of the Spotless Mind] or Synecdoche [New York] was a sci-fi. It...

Madeleine Gavin has a background in editing, working on the likes of Luce and Meadowland and that skill is also to the fore in her latest documentary. In it, she weaves together tense footage of North Koreans attempting the treacherous journey to freedom with first-person testimony from those who have defected and a potted history of the rogue state itself.
You can sense the background research and meticulous trust-building that has gone on behind the scenes almost immediately as we meet Pastor Kim, a South Korean who has been helping people escape the North Korean dictatorship along a complex ‘underground railroad’ for years. He has helped thousands from the dangerous border mountains of China down through neighbouring countries, via an unforgiving jungle and a river to the sanctuary of Thailand. The bravery to do this - an activity that has already led to Kim breaking his neck in the...

There’s no denying Olivia Wilde can direct the hell out of a movie. And with her latest behind-the-camera effort, “Don’t Worry Darling,” the actress turned filmmaker constructs a sexy and suspenseful thriller.
It’s a film that should resonate with moviegoers, who may show up to check out an easy-on-the-eyes ensemble that includes Florence Pugh, Harry Styles and Chris Pine. At the very least, it’s a film that will continue to generate plenty of chatter. However, like most popcorn thrillers, the chances of the Academy checking the film off on their ballots is as farfetched as the movie’s attempt to make Harry Styles look unattractive in one critical scene. Nice try, but I don’t buy it.
The end product is a smorgasbord of high octane thrillers, similar to “Gone Girl” (2014), which landed a single nom for its leading actress Rosamund Pike. Pugh, a previous nominee for “Little Women,...

This year, the motion picture academy achieved its five-year goal of doubling the number of women among its membership. In all, 819 film professionals were invited to become part of the organization that hands out the Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous five years: 842 in 2019; a record 928 in 2018; 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.
While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.
For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

Two wide entries will enter the marketplace, Im Global/Paramount/Eon’s Blake Lively R-rated femme assassin movie Rhythm Section and Orion/United Artists Releasing’s PG-13 fantasy horror Gretel & Hansel, but neither are expected to make any kind of excitement at the multiplex. Whether it’s operating the camera as a director, creating the perfect movie poster or ridding televisions of motion-smoothing settings, Reed Morano is determined to get what she wants. On her latest film, The Rhythm Section, the Emmy and DGA Award winner “strips down” Blake Lively’s Stephanie Patrick as she pursues the terrorists who bombed her family’s airplane. The result is Lively’s most haunting and committed performance to date — much like Morano captured with Olivia Wilde on Meadowland and Elisabeth Moss on The Handmaid’s Tale.

Sean Bobbitt and Reed Morano have a common perspective. Both have been cinematographers on scores of projects, and each sees a script from a visual point of view. And when Bobbitt shot 2012’s “The Place Beyond the Pines,” Morano was there as second unit director. So when Morano invited Bobbitt aboard “The Rhythm Section,” a daughter-turned-assassin thriller starring Blake Lively and Jude Law and produced by “Bond” franchise matriarch Barbara Broccoli, he didn’t hesitate to sign up.
“[Reed] has very strong ideas — visual ideas — which is what you’d expect from a fellow cinematographer,” says Bobbitt, well known for his work with Steve McQueen. “It was all about Reed.”
His challenge with “The Rhythm Section” was to create two visual worlds for Lively’s Stephanie Patrick, a woman who begins the movie as a drug-addicted prostitute, damaged and unstable, and transitions into a highly motivated assassin seeking to avenge her...

It’s a wonder that Stephanie Patrick makes it to the end of “The Rhythm Section” alive. Normal people tend not to survive the kind of sophisticated revenge mission that snaps Stephanie out of her depression and into action-hero mode in Reed Morano’s dark, broody and unexpectedly human payback thriller, which stars Blake Lively as a more-motivated-than-coordinated Post Traumatic Suffering Dispenser.
Lest you fear any mention of her survival constitutes a spoiler, consider this: The movie was adapted from the first of four pulpy Stephanie Patrick novels written by Mark Burnell, so of course she doesn’t die. But she comes awfully close on several occasions, and her near-incompetence in the face of danger makes her relatable in ways very few cinematic assassins have ever been. Paramount is opening the movie in January, the month where Liam Neeson is typically the one to do this kind of dirty work.

Olivia Wilde began acting in 2004 when she was 20 years old. It never occurred to her that she might also enjoy stepping behind the lens.
“I always wanted to make movies and be a part of the moviemaking process,” she tells me. “I always assumed acting was the way in, because for many young women … they’re told, ‘You love movies — you should be a movie star.’ No one tells a little girl, ‘Why don’t you become a director?’ It’s just not a part of the conversation. But if a little boy says he loves movies, it’s like, ‘Maybe one day you’ll direct. Maybe you’ll be the next Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese.’”

With Directorial Debut ‘Booksmart’, Olivia Wilde Addresses Underestimated Demographic Of Young Women
After playing determined free spirits who refuse to be boxed in, like Quorra in Tron: Legacy, Devon Finestra in HBO’s Vinyl, and ambitious Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter Kathy Scruggs in this season’s Richard Jewell, Olivia Wilde expanded her resume, which already included producing Meadowland and A Vigilante, to make her feature directorial debut with revisionist teen comedy Booksmart. The pic follows two brainy high schoolers played by Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever, who realize they have only 24 hours before graduation to finally let loose. What ensues is a comedic caper packed with poignant musings on friendship and identity.
While the pic, like many smaller films this past summer, was bulldozed by Avengers: Endgame and Aladdin, it spoke to its core audience, and Wilde impressed studio executives around town to the point where they were clamoring and bidding on her follow-up directing projects with Booksmart writing collaborator Katie Silberman:...

Films by and centering around women will be showcased among the 159 films — 35 narratives, 15 documentaries and 109 shorts — at the 22nd Scad Savannah Film Festival. Following an Oscar year in which they were shut out, more than 50 selections — many in awards-foreshadowing categories — are directed by women.

At this year’s festival, for which organizers expect 63,000 attendees from Oct. 26-Nov. 2, Wilde will receive Scad’s Rising Star Director Award for her directorial debut, “Booksmart.”

Reed Morano has already left her mark on television (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) and independent films (“Meadowland”), but at the start of 2020 the beloved cinematographer-turned-filmmaker will make her major Hollywood studio debut with “The Rhythm Section.” The revenge thriller stars Blake Lively, Jude Law, Max Casella, and Sterling K. Brown and is based on the Mark Burnell novel of the same name. Burnell adapted his book for the big screen, with James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson backing the project at Paramount.
The official synopsis from Paramount Pictures reads: “Stephanie Patrick (Lively) is an ordinary woman on a path of self-destruction after her family is tragically killed in a plane crash. When Stephanie discovers that the crash was not an accident, she enters a dark, complex world to seek revenge on those responsible and find her own redemption.”

The 2019 Tribeca Film Festival has officially gotten underway. Coming to the cinematic world between the meat market of the Sundance Film Festival every January and the prestige of the Cannes Film Festival every May, the fest is hitting at arguably the perfect time. Each and every April for the last 16 years, Tribeca has showcased a wife variety of (mostly) independent movies, some of which can struggle to see the light of day, while others fare better and break through. Still, there’s always a gem or two in the lineup, along with even the occasional Academy Award nominee. That should still be the case in 2019, so now is a solid time to take a look at some of what Tribeca has to offer for this year. Last year, two of the best movies ever to play the festival hit in All About Nina and Disobedience. They were joined by the...

In this short, six women share the challenges and the complexities of life as a modern cinematographer: Reed Morano, Autumn Eakin, Kate Arizmendi (Cam), Maria Rusche (Milkwater), Allison Anderson (Your Name Isn't English), and Emoni Aikens (Hell Fire and Glory). Each one shares honest insights that will definitely inspire and encourage others. The reminds me to recommend another documentary, Cameraperson, if you haven't seen it yet. This short doc is terrific and I just want to show it to everyone I know in the industry. It's a touching, honest, and highly motivational film about some of the most important ...

Yesterday, the Tribeca Film Festival announced its lineup for 2019. Each year, the fest offers up a number of interesting movie options, some of which have even gone on to crack my year end top ten lists. Last year, for example, All About Nina remained one of my top five films of 2018 from its debut at Tribeca through the conclusion of the season. Coming right before the summer movie season, it offers up a tonic before the blockbusters fully descend upon us. What will this year bring? Well, that’ll be determined in late April when the festival begins, but the lineup offers a few hints about the higher profile titles that will be playing. Tribeca will be home to Georgetown, for example, marking the directorial debut of Christoph Waltz. He’ll also star. Jared Leto will screen his documentary A Day in the Life of America for the first time.

The Tribeca Film Festival has announced the full lineup of films for its 18th edition, which includes new films directed by Jared Leto, Christoph Waltz, Antoine Fuqua, Werner Herzog, Abel Ferrera and more.

Wilson will star alongside Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin in “Zombieland 2.” As previously reported, Zoey Deutch, Thomas Middleditch, and Rosario Dawson are also boarding the cast.
In the sequel, the zombie slayers must face off against new kinds of living dead that have evolved since the first movie, as well as new human survivors. They have to also deal with the growing pains of their own makeshift family.
It’s unknown who Wilson will be playing in the pic.

Luke Wilson has boarded DC Universe series “Stargirl” as Stripe pilot Pat Dugan. Stripe, by the way, is a 15-foot robot created by the mechanic-turned-superhero.
“Stargirl” centers on high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) who inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. This new DC Universe series, slated to launch in 2019, reimagines Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America.
The “Old School” alum plays Pat Dugan, who once went by the less-than-inspired superhero name of Stripesy, sidekick to a young hero known as The Star-Spangled Kid, and later, Starman of the legendary Justice Society of America. Today, Pat has left his sidekick life behind him. But when his new step-daughter, Courtney Whitmore, discovers Pat’s secret past and takes on Starman’s legacy to become Stargirl, Pat is forced to come out of retirement and once again...
