- Alex and Jo are making the most of their time in bed in the morning. Meanwhile, Hunt and Emma are doing the same while she talks about how he lives in a "tin can." He suggests they consider getting a bigger place together. Derek is getting ready for his meeting with the president. Meredith is being supportive of Derek getting the job, as a professional, but not so much as her husband. They haven't had sex in three weeks because he went back on his promise to let Meredith focus on her work. Callie forces Arizona to unpack a box in their new house -- there's a ring inside and she inscribed the band with the date they moved into the new house, commemorating their new start.
Jackson and April are still trying to hide their marriage from everyone at the hospital and Hunt tells Derek he's considering moving out of the trailer. Cristina overhears this.
Hunt announces the hospital's new "non-fraternization" policy and says all relationships with co-workers will be discouraged and all relationships between superiors and subordinates "is still prohibited." Jo and Shane don't look happy. Webber chastises Hunt for being "the panty police" now, but Hunt passes the job of discussing it further with the residents. Jo confronts Hunt with "questions" about the policy, and Hunt refers her to Webber.
A teenage girl named Rory is having her toenails polished by her sister. Rory is in with cancer for a second time. They're going to biopsy a tumor, which Callie says is a totally separate one from the first. Alex notices some breathing issues and wants to do another test. He and Callie don't look happy.
A 32-year-old woman named Lisa is brought in after being found injured in a trash chute. The woman insists she's not homeless and wasn't foraging for food. Her leg looks completely infected. She asks April to call her boyfriend, Ted, but to hang up if his wife answers.
Jo complains to Webber about the policy, mentioning Meredith and Derek's meeting there. The other residents aren't backing her up. Webber tells Jo that "one of your own" lodged an anonymous complaint that prompted the new policy. Jo turns on Stephanie.
Alex and Webber look at Rory's scan and realize it's a third cancer. The other residents are there. Webber tells them to come up with a plan while working as a team. They all scatter.
Derek briefs Meredith on the status of their house before he heads off for another interview with the White House. Meredith invites Cristina over.
Bailey gives Rory and her family cups to spit in. They want to test for anything genetic that might suggest why she keeps getting cancer. Rory's dad suggests it's on the mom's side, listing the many cancers her relatives have had and beat.
Lisa explains to her friend, who's visiting the hospital, that she was at a party at Ted's house -- we learn Ted is the head of the sociology department. She was mortified after he ignored her all night, but as she left he asked her to take out the trash. She did, but her purse fell into the trash chute and she jumped in after it. Jackson and April continue picking pieces of garbage out of her infested leg.
Arizona tries to tell Alex about her ring, but he's not interested. Jo comes and yells at Alex about ignoring her requests to talk, but he starts yelling back in front of everyone. He shouts that it's a stupid rule and she has a choice about whether to follow it, she shoots back that he has seniority so he doesn't have to worry about it. He yells at her that they're done, and she cries -- in front of everyone. Jo heads for the stairwell and her phone rings. It's Alex, asking, "How was that?" She says it was convincing and thanks him for doing it. They make plans to see each other that night. Alex smiles.
Ben shares Chinese food with Bailey while trying to make a plan for Rory. He says the other residents are made at him because he gets to be happy with Bailey. They're about to get frisky, but Bailey notices a mutation in one of Rory's genes.
Meredith and Cristina are having wine and Meredith admits she's enjoying torturing Derek. Cristina admits that her window with Hunt is closing. Derek shows up and says the interview was canceled. Cristina leaves. Derek heads for bed.
Cristina shows up at Hunt's trailer and drunkenly congratulates him, bringing a bottle of wine. She tells him to enjoy it, "the both of you," and he says Emma's not there.
Jo and Alex are discussing their plans for how to keep their relationship secret. They start making out on the couch.
At their place, Arizona and Callie kiss and giddily make out even as they say they feel bad for Jo in light of her fight with Alex.
Cristina and Hunt are drinking the wine together in the trailer. Cristina randomly starts asking Hunt about his feelings on interior design, and whether he was sad that they never had valances on their drapes in the firehouse -- calling her mom for a reminder on what they're called. He says he's not sad about that. They kiss.
Emma drops by the hospital to talk to Hunt. She starts talking about looking at houses, and the conversation they haven't had about kids. She starts having the kids conversation and Hunt is silent. He reassures her and says it's reasonable and they should be talking about these things.
Bailey comes in and tells Alex, Webber and Callie about Rory's extremely rare genetic condition, which makes her unable to fight off tumors. They start comparing notes on how to treat her. Webber decides to get the residents on it. He goes and tells them about Rory's condition and asks them to look up every case -- there are only a couple hundred -- and figure out what worked and what didn't. Jo volunteers to work with Alex, saying she has to face him sometime. Stephanie and Leah share a glance. Webber gives Shane a little pep talk, telling him he wants to hear him speak up more.
Derek tells Hunt to put him back in the surgery rotation, but Derek admits that the project was exciting -- asking all the questions he's been asking his entire career. He wonders how he can go back to neurosurgery after that. Hunt says he understands, looking over at Cristina, and says, "your standards have changed." Derek agrees.
April tells Lisa her leg is mostly cleaned up and they're going to let it heal. Lisa's friend brings flowers into the room and Lisa cries when she realizes they're not from Ted but from her mom.
Jackson and April talk about their secret marriage and, while April says she likes the secret, they figure they should start telling people.
Rory and her sister talk about her condition, and the sister is worried she'll also get cancer. Her parents are forcing her to get her genes tested, but her sister doesn't want to take it. Alex tells her she doesn't have to take the test if she doesn't want to.
Alex and Jo chat in the hallway and he puts his hand on her shoulder. They step into a supply closet and Alex says he doesn't want to hide their relationship anymore. They hear a noise and Jackson, shirtless, steps out and asks if one of them can hand him his shirt. April steps out, as well, and asks the same. Suddenly, Webber opens the door and finds Jackson and April half-dressed, and Alex and Jo in close proximity. Saying nothing, he shakes his head and closes the door.
Alex assures Jo that the board doesn't really care about the policy, but Jackson, as a board member, says the board cares.
Meredith tells Cristina that her project is at a standstill unless she hands it over to a bioengineer. She doesn't want to let Derek off the hook by lowering her workload. Cristina gets philosophical, telling Meredith that she has to think of it as "letting someone else take your project out for a spin," seeing what else is out there before letting it come back with fresh eyes. Meredith figures out that Cristina slept with Hunt. Cristina admits it's true.
Alex and Webber respond to an emergency with Rory. Her sister sees it all and is scared.
Jo confronts Stephanie about her complaint, saying that she should have just dealt with her "little heart" being broken. Stephanie repeats that it was an anonymous complaint, and Leah jumps in to admit that she filed it because she felt like her education was being compromised. Shane stands up and says they're squandering the opportunity they have. He admits he almost blew it all because he got distracted by Cristina and they're all getting distracted, too. He says he has an idea, and hands Ben a paper. They finally start working together, but Webber and Alex are simply trying to keep Rory's heart beating. The residents are getting excited about their plan and they go to tell Webber.
They run down the hall and catch Webber and Alex coming out of surgery. Webber says their idea might have worked, but Rory bled out in surgery. She died. They're stunned.
Alex and Webber tell Rory's parents and sister. Her parents cry and her sister asks if she has the same syndrome. Alex says yes.
Alex is summoned to the boardroom. Jo is already in there. Alex is angry that he's even there. Callie says they just want him to keep his relationship professional at work, but he calls that "crap," chastising them for flaunting their relationships and rings and "happy little lives" because they're married.
"I'm not going to let a bunch of hypocrites tell me to keep my pants on at work when this place was built on all of you feeling each other up in our on-call room," he shouts. Jo is still in the room after Alex leaves. Jackson then hastily announces that he and April are married. They get congratulations and Jo is annoyed. April leaves and wishes Jo luck.
Stephanie tells Leah that filing the complaint took a lot of balls. Leah knows Jo is going to mad at her, and Stephanie suggests they go hide at the bar. She forces Shane to come with them.
Lisa's friend calls Ted and tells him to send Lisa flowers, apologize and never see her again. Jackson and April come in and Lisa says she's going to make better decisions and not date married men any longer. Lisa asks Jackson what he's doing that weekend. He says he already has plans with her wife. Lisa tells April that Jackson should really wear a ring, adding, "it's not fair going around looking like that without one."
Ben and Bailey are leaving and the other residents ask if Ben can come with them to the bar. Bailey tells him to go play with his friends, but not to stay out too late.
At the bar, Hunt is breaking up with Emma. She wants an explanation, because that morning they were on the same page. He says he wants to come home to someone at night who is equally passionate about their work, but when she said she'd give up her work for a family, which is fine for her but they want different things. She leaves.
At home, Derek tells Meredith the White House doesn't want him on the advisory board, they want him to run the project. She says she's happy for him, but says there's no room for her to take her career to the next level and for him to "run the thing." But she smiles and says she's going to have sex with him, because she finds presidential appointments very sexy, and they can fight more later.
