Up until recently I worked the night shift in a hotel, so I know how creepy it can feel at times, especially when you’re getting used to the place with all of the building’s odd little noises and quirks. That’s the position Gwen finds herself in.
Recently moved into the area and in need of money, she’s answered an ad for a temporary overnight position at the All Tucked Inn. The owner Teddy, who seems to be making his story up as he goes along, tells her the woman who regularly does the job has been sidelined with medical issues. He’d love to stay and help, but he has a date. But there’s nothing to worry about, this is a quiet, peaceful place where nothing ever happens.

The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
The Collector
If the triumphant return of the Saw franchise has you in the mood for more trap-laden horrors, look no further than The Collector — which was originally conceived as a prequel to Saw that would show Jigsaw’s original story. When producers passed on the idea, writers Patrick Melton & Marcus Dunstan (Saw IV-vii) reworked it into an original script, which Dunstan directed in 2009.
A slasher/home invasion hybrid for the so-called “torture porn” era, The Collector stars Criminal Minds‘ Josh Stewart as struggling ex-con Arkin. A planned heist at his new employer’s home to repay a debt becomes deadly when he...

Another surprise addition to Screambox is The Diabolical, which stars Final Destination and Resident Evil’s Ali Larter as a young widowed mother who turns to her scientist boyfriend for help when she is terrorized by unexplained disturbances and horrific visions in her home.
Alistair Legrand’s The Diabolical follows Madison and her children in their quiet suburban home as they are awoken nightly by an increasingly strange and intense presence. Madison desperately seeks help from her scientist boyfriend Nikolai, who begins a hunt to destroy the violent spirit that paranormal experts are too frightened to undertake.
Patrick Fischler (“Mad Men”), Arjun Gupta (“Nurse Jackie”), Merrin Dungey (“Betrayal”) and Joe Egender (“American Horror Story: Asylum”) also star.

Mile 81, a Stephen King novella about a killer car, is another movie project on the growing docket of adaptations of the author’s work.
One may be forced to feign surprise when hyping the news that another Stephen King literary work – this time novella Mile 81 – is getting a movie adaptation.
Indeed, the entertainment industry’s “Kingaissance” that, for the past few years, has been flooding studio backlogs across the film and television industries, can add yet another entry to the list of developing projects with a film adaptation of Mile 81, reports Deadline. The King story, which first arrived as a 2011 novella, was later released in the author's 2015 The Bazaar of Bad Dreams short story collection.
A simple plot description of Mile 81 might make one dismiss it as “the other Stephen King story about an evil car.” However, unlike Christine, the popular 1983 novel and same-year film about a malevolently possessed 1958 Plymouth Fury,...

Another day, another Stephen King project gets picked up for development. Alistair Legrand (Clinical) is set to direct an adaptation of King’s supernatural horror-thriller Mile 81, which is a 2011 novella. It’s said to be a mix of Stand By Me and Christine.
The story is set around "a remote, boarded-up rest stop, and the movie will follow 12-year-old Pete, his brother, and a group of strangers who must fight to survive as they’re hunted by a mysterious force.”
This is why I don’t stop at rest stops when I travel! The movie is being produced by Ross M. Dinerstein, who recently produced Netflix’s adaptation of King’s 1922, which turned out to be a great movie. He is also producing the John Grisham inspired docu-series The Innocent Man.
Here’s a full description of the story:

The best advice I could give you during a film festival is to take at least one day off. Watching movies is wonderful fun, but there comes a point around day 5 or 6 when the idea of a movie just feels exhausting and all you want to do is lay on your bed, eat, and watch television.
So for the most part of my Tuesday I chilled at home, munching on avocado toast and lounging on my comfortable queen size bed reflecting on the films I have so far seen this festival (this also helped because Letterboxd came out with an app and I could rate all of them from my phone!). I came up with a list of favorites because I am obsessed with ranking and rating things. So below I have listed the films I have seen at SXSW so far from most favorite to least:

Scary movies are like all you can eat sushi bars, they’re often better in theory than in execution and when they’re bad you can smell the stink coming off of them from a mile away. However, when you come across a great one, the experience stays with you for a long time and you want to share it with everybody. Director Alistair Legrand does his best to push his feature film debut, The Diabolical, into the latter category. The Diabolical offers slick visuals, a killer score, and a genre-bending script that make for a film that is often more ambitious than entertaining.
In The Diabolical, Ali Larter plays Madison, a single mother trying to manage a household that just can’t catch a break. Madison is still learning to cope with the death of her husband,...

An original idea is not necessarily enough on its own to ensure a successful film, but it certainly is a good start. Let’s call this half the battle, while the other half is the execution. This is where The Diabolical falls short. Despite this unfortunate set back, this debut film from writer-director Alistair Legrand has some commendable elements that make experiencing the film a worthwhile endeavor.
Aside from having a super cool name to plaster onto the title sequence of his film, Legrand also has some intriguing ideas. The Diabolical is, for lack of a more refined terminology, a mash-up of genres, namely horror and science-fiction. This is certainly not the first time these two genres have collided, but never quite like this.

Ali Larter is known for starring roles in thrillers like "Final Destination" and "Resident Evil: Afterlife," so it's no surprise that she's sticking to her roots for "The Diabolical." The flick follows a single mother and her two young children as they are tormented by an increasingly strange and intense presence in their quiet suburban home.
To celebrate the release of her new movie, Larter shared five movies she watches when she's in the mood for a scare.
Be sure to catch "The Diabolical" in theaters, on VOD or on iTunes Friday, October 16.

As you may remember from my last column (and you better… you better), The Diabolical was well and truly “the s–t”! Well, guess what, creeps? That’s right, that flick’s co-writer/die-rector Alistair Legrand has stopped by the Crypt o’ Xiii to talk all about his foray into our beloved horror biz!
Famous Monsters. Welcome Big A! As this is yer first time at the rodeo known as the horror biz, what challenges did you face bringin’ The Diabolical to the screen?
Alastair Legrand. First of all, I can’t believe I’m talking to Famous Monsters; this is amazing. In response to your question, this was the best graduate film program I could have done, and a proper response would be ten pages long. The first main challenge was convincing the producers that I was the right man for the job—proving to them that I had...

The tenth annual Toronto After Dark Film Festival kicks off in a couple weeks and the festival has finally announced the second half of titles for this year’s lineup as well as the Canadian and International shorts. PopOptiq will once again be covering the event so be sure to check back at the end of the month. Here is the press release.
The Hallow (Ireland) Toronto Premiere
Possibly the scariest film in this year’s Toronto After Dark lineup, The Hallow from the producers of Let Us Prey terrified audiences at Sundance on its debut. After a young family move from the big city to a peaceful Irish woodland cottage, their dismissive attitude to folklore legends angers the local townspeople. It’s not long before the family members find themselves in a desperate fight for survival in a prolonged confrontation with some vicious creatures lurking in the forest.

You only need to watch one haunted house movie to know that finding someone who believes something paranormal is actually happening is a major challenge. In Alistair Legrand’s The Diabolical, the family is far past the initial panic of needing someone to come save them. They’ve given up on outside help. No one is coming. The only thing left to do is find a way to survive the invasions that come over and over and over again.
Ali Larter plays Madison, a single mother whose house and children have been terrorized by a series of paranormal apparitions. As she tries to find a way to get her family out of the house, it becomes apparent that her kids aren’t going to be able to leave. After her scientist boyfriend (Arjun Gupta) sees one of the invaders, he attempts to find a way to stop whatever it is that’s ruining their lives.

South by Southwest starts tomorrow, Friday, March 13, and my pores are beaming with excitement, though that could just be a medical condition. I am looking at a very packed schedule of films over the nine day festival, with a total of 38 in all (36 reviews to write). So, I basically will be drowning in movies. But, then again, I can't complain too much, as I wouldn't have it any other way. You can take a look at what I hope my schedule ends up being below. Obviously, things could change as the festival progresses, with some titles getting more buzz than others and overtaking current films and so forth. But, I think, this is how I will be spending my SXSW. I will be updating this post throughout the festival with schedule changes and links to my reviews, so maybe bookmark this page if you're interested. I hope you enjoy my coverage,...

SXSW’s senior programmer Jarod Neece commented on the Midnighters lineup, stating:

Last week, South by Southwest announced their features lineup for this year's festival, which runs from March 13-21. Absent from the slew of films were the Midnighters and the Shorts. Today, SXSW released the titles of 11 Midnight features and 106 short films for their various programs. I will not spend too much time on the shorts.
