Comedy drama Harlem has been renewed for a third series at Amazon Prime, and here are the details.
Writer Tracy Oliver made her name writing a series of comedy features with Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, including 2016 sequel Barbershop: The Next Cut, the wonderful Girls Trip, a film starring Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith and Tiffany Haddish, which flew under the radar in 2017 and is well worth seeking out, and 2019’s Little. Oliver most recently penned a television adaptation of First Wives Club, which ran for three series, and last year’s comedy horror The Blackening.
She then went on to create single camera comedy Harlem, which, reports Variety, has just been renewed for a third series at Amazon Prime. While the setup is nothing new – the series follows four friends who met at University in New York, and subsequently have to support each other through the trials and...

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

This also stars Don Cheadle, Cedric Joe, Khris Davis, Sonequa Martin-Green, plus lots of real NBA stars; along with voice-actors Eric Bauza, Jeff Bergman, Kath Soucie, Bob Bergen, and Gabriel Iglesias making up the animated cast. “Breaking Black” is a weekly column focused on emerging black talent.
“Girls Trip” screenwriter Tracy Y. Oliver got a career by getting mad. Before she became the co-star, writer, and producer on fellow Stanford University alum Issa Rae’s web series “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” she watched the 2009 ensemble rom-com “He’s Just Not That Into You” starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connelly and Scarlett Johansson. The film was set in Baltimore, which has a population that is 64% black and 30% white.
That let to a spec script: “Marriage Is for White People.” She said she wrote it in jest, but it stemmed from a very real response. “It had an all-white cast, which made little sense to me,” she said. “Baltimore is very black, and it felt like an aggressive erasure of people of color. So instead of just being upset about it, I thought, let me...

‘Little’ Screenwriter Speaks Out Against Film’s ‘Insensitive’ Transphobic Joke: ‘I Did Not Write It’
Screenwriter Tracy Oliver spoke out on social media about her latest feature, “Little,” in the wake of backlash over a transphobic joke made in the Regina Hall and Issa Rae-starring comedy. The movie has been at the center of controversy since its April 12 release due to a joke towards the beginning in which Hall’s ruthless tech mogul Jordan confuses a young girl for being a young boy. When the child’s mother tries to correct Jordan, she snaps back, “Oh, he’s transitioning?”
The transphobic joke has been called out by many film critics and moviegoers, and now Oliver says she too found the bit “mean-spirited” and “insensitive.” The “Little” screenplay is credited to both Oliver and director Tina Gordon. Oliver came forward on Twitter to distance herself from the joke, writing she never wrote the transphobic moment into her draft of “Little.”

This weekend sees four new wide releases hitting theaters, though it will be WB's Shazam! enjoying a second go round as the weekend's number one film. As for the week's new releases, look for Hellboy and Little in what could be a tight race for runner-up position, while Laika's latest, Missing Link, vies for a spot in the top five and Aviron's After settles near the bottom of the top ten. After a solid start last weekend, which saw Shazam! exceed industry expectations, the superhero feature is likely to take a bit of a dive this weekend, though should remain in the top spot barring an over performance from a couple of the weekend's newcomers. We're currently anticipating a -58% dip for a three-day around $22.5 million and a ~$92 million domestic cume by the end of the weekend. Second place could be a tight race between Lionsgate's R-rated adaptation...

If there was an artist who owned South by Southwest this year, it was Lizzo. As a longtime cult favorite of the Minneapolis and indie R&B scenes, the singer has spent years training for the mainstream breakthrough she’s poised to enjoy with her major-label debut album, “Cuz I Love You,” due next Friday (April 19) via Atlantic. The singer’s buoyant blend of pop, R&B, funk, hip-hop and jazz flute has struck a chord with a wide range of audiences this year, checking off an early Song of the Summer contender with Missy Elliott collab “Tempo,” making buzzy performances on “The Ellen Show” and “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” as well as a viral “Anchorman” parody this year.
But Lizzo’s support from the synch community helped introduce her music to the masses. Since 2016, her songs have been steadily woven into pop culture through a series of...

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer has promoted veteran executives Cassidy Lange and Adam Rosenberg to co-presidents of production.
Jonathan Glickman, president of MGM’s Motion Picture Group, made the announcement on Thursday. The pair will report to Glickman and be responsible for MGM’s growth in film franchises, re-imagined movies based on the studio’s library, and original productions.
“Cassidy and Adam are the perfect pair to seamlessly lead MGM’s production team into the future,” Glickman said. “They have worked collaboratively for seven years, supervising a diverse slate of films ranging from revitalizing a franchise like ‘Creed’ to the international breakout romance ‘Me Before You’ and everything in between. As I’ve seen firsthand, they balance their strong business sense with extraordinary creative passion and we couldn’t have a more complementary and formidable team overseeing theatrical production.”
MGM’s upcoming slate includes the 25th James Bond movie, directed by Danny Boyle and starring Daniel Craig.

Girls Trip‘s Deborah Ayorinde is set to recur opposite Mahershala Ali in the third season of Nic Pizzolatto’s HBO crime anthology series True Detective.
Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy, Mamie Gummer and Ray Fisher also star in the next installment, which tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.
Ayorinde will play Becca Hayes, the estranged daughter of retired Arkansas State Police detective Wayne Hayes (Ali). She joins previously announced recurring cast Michael Greyeyes, Jon Tenney, Rhys Wakefield, Sarah Gadon, Emily Nelson, Brandon Flynn, Michael Graziadei, Josh Hopkins and Jodi Balfour.
As with the breakout original installment of True Detective, Pizzolatto is the sole writer of the third season with the exception of Episode 4, which he co-wrote with David Milch. Daniel Sackheim directs alongside Pizzolatto, who will make his directorial debut.

Last weekend delivered the largest overall June weekend ever. The top twelve films grossed a combined $271.2 million, of which the top two films — Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Incredibles 2 — accounted for 84% of that gross. While this weekend's two new wide releases — Summit's Uncle Drew and Sony's Sicario: Day of the Soldado — offer an alternative to summer blockbuster fair, last weekend's chart toppers will once again dominate, expected to combine for over $100 million alone. Overall, Summer 2018 has grossed over $2 billion thus far, pacing ~18% ahead of last year's dismal returns, which resulted in the worst summer movie season in over ten years. This year's summer grosses are contributing to a year that is currently pacing 9% ahead of 2017 while the month of June alone is pacing 16% ahead of last year, currently positioned as the second largest June ever. This weekend looks to keep that pace, expected to deliver a combined gross ahead...

"The whole thing's rigged against the people it should be helping the most." Netflix has released an official trailer for the indie film titled simply just Amateur, the feature debut of writer/director Ryan Koo, also known as the founder of the film website No Film School. Koo's Amateur is about a 14-year-old basketball phenom named who struggles to fit in with his new team after a video of him goes viral. He also discovers a system of corruption and greed in amateur sports. Michael Rainey Jr. (from "Orange Is the New Black", "Power", and Barbershop: The Next Cut) plays Terron, and the cast includes Josh Charles, Brian White, Corey Parker Robinson, and Sharon Leal. This looks intense, and a bit depressing (how rigged it all is). Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Ryan Koo's Amateur, direct from Netflix's YouTube: Talent and hard work won't matter if the game is playing the system.
